The ultimate winter coat

AnnieJ1985 · 10/09/2020 08:34

I reckon I could be looking for the moon on a stick. Recently moved house so my workplace is now a 15 mins walk from home, and I need a coat for the winter. Here is my wish-list

  • waterproof, but not plasticky
  • not too heavy/warm (so I don't land into office sweating buckets) on colder days I can throw on an extra layer under it
  • below the knee
  • prefer zip-up to buttons
  • hood
  • pockets
  • I am open to any colour
  • size 18
  • would love something slim fitting, with a bit of shape to it (obvs I am not slim myself)
  • budget around £150

Any suggestions/reviews would be lovely!

Obviously don't have to go for yellow. I've found this sort of style of coat from Regatta to be perfect for the requirements you've described, and the ones I've had have fitted beautifully (Not bulked me out! From a fellow size 18!)

I've got a Lands End waterproof squall now and I love it. My old Lands End one is now for going for walks and it can get scratched by bushes and thorns, it's over 10 years old.

@goingtobedalone

Has anyone got the DIDRIKSONS Golda Parka ?

www.didriksons.com/en/women/jackets/autumn-winter-jackets/golda-women-s-parka-502580-060

I just received it , ordered black, size 38 but it's really huge, i get that that's the look, but I'm not sure now... looks great when zip open, but that's not how I'll mostly be wearing it

Yeh id look like a moving marquee in that coat if it was too big.

I have Seasalt Coverack and love it! I love on West coast of Scotland and it keeps me totally dry on the wet and windy school run! It's water and wind proof, big pockets, great hood. It's a rain coat so is not particularly warm, other than keeping the windchill out, but I just layer up on cold days. Don't get too cold when walking anyway.

HooseDilemma · 11/09/2020 10:05

My Barbour Kellsal is ideal for this, although it isn't as long as your knees. It does come to the upper thigh though.

Because wax is super breathable I wear it all autumn without being too hot and all winter without being cold. Literally Oct to March.

The online photos can look a little bulky around the waist, but there is actually a hidden internal drawstring to give it a shape at the waist and makes it look smarter and more fitted.

Uniqlo puffa. They have lightweight ones as well as heavyweight ones. I love them.

@evilharpy Joules Stormbridge is great, I just received mine today. Similar cut to their longline raincoat but with fur lining on the upper body. Not padded either so it gives a flattering fit. I think it would suit your needs OP, definetly worth a try.

It's fab isn't it! It's warm but not at all bulky and looks really nice on.

Thanks again

Also have a look at regatta costs.

AlwaysInAQ · 13/09/2020 14:18

I bought a Michael Kors lightly padded coat from TK Maxx a couple of years ago and it really is a good all round coat

WiserOlder · 13/09/2020 14:26

Regatta and Craghopper seem a little cheaper than some of the other brands. Like fjallraven, northface, berghaus.

In terms of the technology that goes in to the warmth, can a joules coat really compare?? Not that I particularly like the joules coats or seasalt coat is it (One that is often recommended on here)

There is a lovely picture of a barbour hooded parka (it looks like a parka) without a trim on the john lewis site atm, but when you click in to barbour coats, I can't see that one Confused Anybody know if the trims on the hoods of their coats are detachable?

grey12 · 13/09/2020 14:36

It's hot but amazing!! I just got the Northface Artic 2

A mum on my school run has one like this:
gb.tretorn.com/women/apparel/rain-jackets/wings-rainjacket-stone-blue-475563086xxs

Not sure if it fits the "non plastic" element of your search but she always looks effortlessly cool.

WiserOlder · 14/09/2020 07:26

I like that, to just throw on over a padded jacket when it's raining.

AnnieJ1985 · 14/09/2020 08:13

@WiserOlder I have a Craghopper one and it is very good, but a bit shorter than I want (am I the only person who ends up with damp jeans, maybe I wear my coat wrong 😂🤔)

There is a small Regatta store near me, I will pop in there for a browse too.

Typical, the weather here is glorious the last 2 days so now I am not in coat mode at all

@Week
I like that a lot, but I think I would look like a toddler, although I have seen other women wear similar and look brilliant

How about this, with a discount code to bring it in budget?

NannyOgg66 · 15/09/2020 14:37

@averythinline which Merill style did you get ? Ive been looking for a below knee waterproof winter coat, has to have some padding though not just waterproof. I'm 5ft 7 so it's been hard to find one long enough

TheClitterati · 15/09/2020 20:50

Your OP pretty much describes my Seasalt Janelle. In the very depth of winter I might wear a lightweight down jacket under, but mostly it's warm enough especially as I'm walking.

I'm an 18/20 and fairly busty and it works for me.

WiserOlder · 17/09/2020 07:41

It looks too long for anybody who isnt tall.
What is the difference between the janelle and the hunter?

WiserOlder · 17/09/2020 07:42

Oh I had a great merrill coat, did me for about 8 years before the zip went. Do merrill still make coats?

TheClitterati · 17/09/2020 11:54

I'm 5'8" - just tried the Janelle on to double check and it hits just above my knee. I couly happily have it longer
