Nice dress or not?

I'm looking for a dress to attend a wedding in the USA at Christmas. Is this too matronly? I'm hopeless at style. Usually wear jeans.

Nice dress or not?

I don’t like the swirly raised pattern on the first dress. The second is better.

CountFosco · 19/10/2019 21:50

I said evening gown so I'll qualify that. DH's family are wealthy and hispanic, the US contingent live in Texas. Most of them wore evening gowns to PILs golden wedding anniversary in Scotland (as did MIL) and the south american weddings are 100% evening gowns. They like hats a lot less than Brits though. So, as I said, check with the family because it will vary.

FWIW I think dress 1 looks most flattering on you but you do have a cracking va va voom figure so suspect lots of things will look good. Like the idea of the star dress and it is a more fashionable shape.

MrsBertBibby · 19/10/2019 21:51

What in the world is wrong with the sleeve length? It shows off OP's very nice arms without freezing her to death in December! And the waist is where her waist is!

ghislaine · 19/10/2019 21:52

What about something with a thick block of colour around your enviable waist? I think a v-neck neckline is good - too high a neckline gives you a monoboob. A bracelet length sleeve would be more stylish than a short sleeve.

Ohyesiam · 19/10/2019 21:58

I thought you had a great figure in the first one, but it looks even better in the second.
The first one needs to be take up to just where your calf and shin are narrowest just below your knee.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 19/10/2019 22:21

Dress 1. The V neck suits your figure so much better. The scoop round neck gives you a very top heavy and matronly bosom.

It's often hard to tell so much without heels on, but you do have a cracking shape, seriously.

Keep the dress silhouette simple, accessories understated and get some in your face, knockout shoes.

FluffyAlpaca19 · 19/10/2019 22:25

Try Bombshell HQ for wedding guest dresses.

peachgreen · 19/10/2019 22:32

A v-neck with that length of sleeves makes one look very top heavy as the eye is drawn outwards. Plus they're very out of fashion. Longer or shorter would both work!

Insertdeadcatsnamehere · 20/10/2019 09:02

I don't think you should wear the 2nd one for the wedding but I do think you should buy it anyway, you look great in it!

manicmij · 20/10/2019 14:48

Depending on where in USA wedding is it is fine. Query a bit 'heavy' looking if in a warm area. If so something a bit floaty and light would be good. If in the northern territories then go with it, just a little shorter though. You have a fab figure, you can wear anything you feel dressy/comfortable in.

CmdrCressidaDuck · 20/10/2019 14:55

second looks great. first looks matronly. apols to all proud matrons of the parish, but the comparison is stark.

^this. The second one is less weddingy but much more fun and makes you look much younger and cooler.

Dependent on dress code Id probably go with "neither" and buy the star one for another occasion, but it depends what your style and taste is really.

dontgobaconmyheart · 20/10/2019 15:17

Neither look awful OP as you have a good figure but I'd have got neither. Dress one fabric and cut has some really elderly vibes to it.

Neither look very expensive or fit perfectly so I'd have kept looking. Theres no point wearing a dress to a wedding that you have to suck your stomach in, not if you want to have fun.

The idea of a star print dress is sweet though (plus I love them). I'd get on google and order some to try on!

notthemum · 20/10/2019 15:24

Sorry, don't like the 1st one at all. The 2nd one I want.

Moominfan · 20/10/2019 15:25

I love the fit but it's abit dark. Maybe something with more colour

MrsL2016 · 20/10/2019 15:46

I agree with others that the first is a bit dark and the material looks really thick and heavy. Its a lovely shape though and you have a great figure. I don't like the second one for a wedding but it looks great on you too. Had a quick look at Debenhams website and looked similar styles, will add pics to the next post.

MrsL2016 · 20/10/2019 15:47

Here you go

notthemum · 20/10/2019 18:13

Oh yes. This dress sent from MrsL2016. Much more flattering for you, will show off your fab figure, good colour and smart but not OTT. Off you pop to Debenham before this bloody dress lark costs me a fortune. 😉

Myshitisreal · 20/10/2019 18:30

Ohhhhh I was reading yesterday and lost this, need to catch up. I had ideas!!!!!

Jayaywhynot · 20/10/2019 18:41

I liked the first one but agree it needs taking up a bit, facinator, wrap and heels and you'll look fab. Suits your lovely figure, tiny waist, great boobs! I'm jealous, I'm a flat chested mner Grin

Fuckenstein · 20/10/2019 18:48

I dont like the sleeves, length or fabric of the first one. The V next suits you but the edge of the V looks a bit funny.

I like the 2nd dress but not for the wedding.

DelphiniumBlue · 20/10/2019 18:57

You've got a fabulous figure and I'm sure you can find something much nicer than either of those dresses. The first one is suitable but dull, and the second looks cheap and not sophisticated enough. Keep looking!

Majorcollywobble · 20/10/2019 21:45

Is that cornelli embroidery on the dress ?
Looks like it and if so it’s a nice effect .
Think as others have said you have a great figure and the style really flatters it too .
If your coloring is blonde or auburn think the colour on you will be fab . But not so much if you are a brunette . Accessories will really make the dress .

WhisperingJesse · 20/10/2019 22:08

Oh, thanks for more responses while I've been out all day! And thanks for the compliments Smile
@MrsL2016 thanks for the suggestions - I love the blue one particularly and will definitely give that a try.

First one is an elegant length and second one shoes too much leg and just not as elegant.

Honeyroar · 21/10/2019 01:41

I like the first one. The colour is good for a Xmas wedding, it just needs dressing up with jewelery, shoes, tights and perhaps a fascinator. You do have a figure that could wear just about anything.
