Nice dress or not?

I'm looking for a dress to attend a wedding in the USA at Christmas. Is this too matronly? I'm hopeless at style. Usually wear jeans.

Nice dress or not?

second looks great. first looks matronly. apols to all proud matrons of the parish, but the comparison is stark.

Bluntness100 · 19/10/2019 12:36

The first one is better, way better, the second isn't really weddingy. I think the first is a beautiful colour. It might be worth taking it up a bit, but I think with high nude shoes would look great as is.

MarianaMoatedGrange · 19/10/2019 14:39

Love the dress! I don't have the norkage for that style. You look great though!

MarianaMoatedGrange · 19/10/2019 14:40

I'd go for mustard coloured or cerise shoes, personally.

1forAll74 · 19/10/2019 14:53

I am over 70,and would not wear either of those dresses, they are quite dull for a wedding, and more like day dresses. You have a good figure, and something with more colour would be nicer.

managedmis · 19/10/2019 14:56

I LOVE the first one personally

managedmis · 19/10/2019 14:57

I'm 37, if that matters, and a style guru to boot Grin

Expressedways · 19/10/2019 15:07

I’d check the invite for the dress code before committing to an outfit. Americans are usually very specific about whether it’s black tie or black tie optional... even in Kansas you may need an evening gown! And sorry but regardless of dress code I don’t think those dresses are doing anything for you and I’d keep looking.

Mamasaurus82 · 19/10/2019 15:20

I like both and think you should wear the first one. It can be dressed up or diwn with different accessories so you get some wear out of it after.

ControversialFerret · 19/10/2019 15:23

Prefer the first one but agree get the length taken up a bit.

LizzieMacQueen · 19/10/2019 15:24

I'd suggest, if going for 1st dress, to get a more uplifting bra. Will make the world of difference.

Legomadx2 · 19/10/2019 16:08

Buy the first one and get some bright shoes as a PP has suggested to cheer it up a bit.

thetardis · 19/10/2019 16:10

dress 1 faults

: sofa fabric
: midi length
: mid-arm length wtf?

don't "cheer it up a bit" burn it on a skip :D

Ohwhatbliss · 19/10/2019 16:15

Prefer the first but agree with taking it up just a touch to make it less "matronly". Had to comment today say WHAT a figure you have, both dresses are a great shape on you

Weymo · 19/10/2019 16:44

Fits you perfectly and flatteringly.

Colour is a bit dull. Wear some lightcatching earrings or statement necklace or shoes.

VenusTiger · 19/10/2019 16:53

Go for some colour OP, deep red or purple. It’ll be Christmas after all.

KUGA · 19/10/2019 17:03

ERRRRM tbh they both look frumpy SORRY.

ginghamtablecloths · 19/10/2019 17:13

It looks great and with the right shoes and maybe a posh necklace even better. Fabulous darling.

WhisperingJesse · 19/10/2019 19:16

Wow, such a range of opinions! Thanks for all the comments. I will keep looking as I'm sure I could find something that shouts 'Yes!' even more loudly. But I'm sure I can wear the first one somewhere/sometime.

I certainly don't 'feel' as though I have a great figure so thanks for the confidence-boosting!

Probably a bit late to be of any help, OP, but honestly no to the first one - ok fit but the whole thing is so dull and matronly. Second one is much less ageing, but agree with others that you have a great figure and could go for something much more flattering, esp in terms of richer colour for a winter wedding. Hope you find something you really love!

Ginkypig · 19/10/2019 20:47

Neither are what I would wear but then my choice probably wouldn't be your cup of tea either! but out of the 2 I think the first one looks lovely on you.

If I saw you at a wedding in the first one I'd probably say to the person I was with doesn't she look good, that dress looks smart on her.

I like the idea about the stars esp in relation to the brides father (your brother) but not that dress it just isn't right. I don't like the sleeves and the neckline gives (your great boobs) the appearance of being too big almost matronly!

1ToughCookie · 19/10/2019 21:17

Late to the party, but I must say I'm astonished by all the comments saying "evening gowns" are a must! Never been to a wedding (in the USA) in my life that required such formal attire. It was just right if you'd attend church in it. Maybe I'm not from a rich enough social circle!

Definitely check the invite for what's appropriate. If that's not clear enough then have a quick chat with the host.

I like your figure in the knee length, slim skirt and V neck. You probably could do a flared skirt or A line skirt to balance the bust and hip (but I have a feeling any pleats would open over your thighs so maybe avoid those).

peachgreen · 19/10/2019 21:17

That first one could not be more of the wrong shape for you, sorry OP! It's too long, the waist is too low and the sleeve length is atrocious. You have a fabulous figure and can definitely do better!

KittyMarion · 19/10/2019 21:31

I think the first one is awful. You have a great shape and that does nothing for it. You can do much better.

WhisperingJesse · 19/10/2019 21:34

Perhaps I need a personal shopper 😀
