Yikes, have to buy trainers. I hate trainers. Which are the least hideous please?

The other night I got stuck trying to get out of dd's bed. I was feebling flailing like a geriatric upturned beetle. I suddenly had a vision of myself at 70, tottering along in a walking frame, which scared me so much I was driven me to join a gym (that and the flab). I do not own a pair of trainers. I hate trainers. They are so big and white. I feel a complete self-conscious fake in them too. I don't want to pay Louboutin prices for shoes so can anyone recommend a brand/style that aren't like breezeblocks for the feet? Please?

I like Adidas ones along the lines of these or these - not clompy breezeblocks but lightweight and available in other colours so not that glaring white look

I quite like the blue suede ones...but would I be laughed at/frowned on for wearing them actually in the gym? Sort of plan to do more stairmaster, leg exercises type things rather than high impact aerobics.

I do need more energy and to be stronger. The upturned beetle incident was not good.
Shall I just go to JD sports and say take me to your cheap trainers then?

I like Nike Shox (not the full set, just Shox on the heels), you can get older colours/styles at bargain prices

Don't diss the classes when I started I really felt I was not a fitness class type and I love them so much, it helps to develop a herd mentality when you walk in the door of a class and let the instructor and the class push you beyond what you would do on your own in the gym.

I have the blue suede adidas ones, and trust me, they are NOT a gym shoe. They are not supportive and not shock absorbant.

If you are new to the gym, you have to forget fashion if you don't want blisters/jarred knees etc.

You want some nice Nike motos - they are like slippers. Yes I look like a bit of a tool in them, but honestly, when accessorised with tracksuit bottoms, faded T-shirt and my mummy-tummy, I don't think it's my shoes people are laughing at.

you need ones like this

aloha · 07/08/2007 19:41

Cropped (just below knee-length) navy gym 'pants' in that synthetic fabric that wicks moisture away or something revolting, plus white v neck t-shirt. I think I shall just buy cheap!

These are nice and not white!

My favourite gym wear shop.

Don't get this having nice stuff for the gym. If you're working out properly you are sweating like a whore's fanjo, and no amount of reebok tailoring can save you.

I second MrsSpoon on the shox. I have a pair in white and they are soooo comfy.

Also have these but not in this colour.
Alot of people pull their nose up at them but they are amazingly comfortable and look really good.

Cod, it's only yourself you are fooling...

florenceuk · 07/08/2007 20:04

There is a good runner's shop in Westminster which will let you try out trainers and advise on which pair fits best. run and become.

Nbg · 07/08/2007 20:04

They are fab.

In fact I got my shox for £25 in the sale at JJBs and the Nike ones from their factory shop for £40.
