Yikes, have to buy trainers. I hate trainers. Which are the least hideous please?

The other night I got stuck trying to get out of dd's bed. I was feebling flailing like a geriatric upturned beetle. I suddenly had a vision of myself at 70, tottering along in a walking frame, which scared me so much I was driven me to join a gym (that and the flab). I do not own a pair of trainers. I hate trainers. They are so big and white. I feel a complete self-conscious fake in them too. I don't want to pay Louboutin prices for shoes so can anyone recommend a brand/style that aren't like breezeblocks for the feet? Please?

What's poncey Cod?

For me the proper gym gear isn't particularly about looking good. I used to just wear ordinary cotton t-shirts but they got to the point that I couldn't get the smell out from the underarms , never have this problem with proper sports tops and normal cheap cotton jogging bottoms (the type of thing you would lounge about the house in) are just too warm to work out in, I find the right gear essential.

MrsSpoon · 07/08/2007 20:12

Shoxs are good for failing pelvic floors!

Tinker · 08/08/2007 13:02

Can any of these shoes be used for running? Am scared of teh gym but think I could cope with running. Have to do some aerobic exercise, I've finally realised but absolutely loathe trainers and sportswear

ImBarryScott · 08/08/2007 13:06

the Nike motos I linked to on a previous post are specifically designed for running, but I find them a good all-rounder. All the shoes from Run and Become, to which Florence linked, are for running as well.

thomcat · 08/08/2007 13:11

Aloha - It's Nike or Adidas only in my eyes. Anything else is not worth taliing about and never, ever, ever buy Rebok!

I'd go for a simple, classic, slim fit, Nike for the gym. Let me see if I can find you what I mean.....

chopster · 08/08/2007 13:12

mine are like this ABsolutely great for the gym, not so much for road running - slight hint of rain and they get very slippery.

If you really hate them though, don't wear them. We had a group of OAPs at ours, all dressed in everyday OAP clothing.

Trust you cod, worryign about what you look like at the gym! With a beetroot face and lank dripping hair, no amount of stylish gymwear is going to make me look good! I jsut went to a JJB or something and bought a few bits of cheap LA gear stuff. Might invest in some cropped tops once I get rid of my stomach though.

I agree though, you NEED music. I find it so much easier to work out with a really good driving beat to get in rythmn to.

thomcat · 08/08/2007 13:22

These are bloody comfy and very bendy and stretchy so good for gym NIKE

Not sure I like these massivley but for gym use only????

Good for gym use

I like these for the gym

I LOVE these

themoon66 · 08/08/2007 14:28

Am still trying to find gym trousers that don't show dampness so I look like i've wet myself after about 10 mins of sweating

But trainers... now I use my old running trainers that are too unsupportive and springy to road run in any more.

DH has some Nike Free ones, but he says they are a bit unsupportive if he is doing the treadmill, otherwise fine on weight machines though.

chopster · 08/08/2007 14:34

I jsut wear navy - doesn't seem to show as badly. I wouldn't worry to much though.

bundle · 08/08/2007 14:53

i bought some new balance red/grey trainers from jjb sports for about £30 (had been £75) they're incredibly comfy, but haven't been near a gym

aloha · 09/08/2007 12:54

I'm off to JD Sports to see if they have the Lace ones thomcat linked to! Wish me luck.

Well, I now own a pair of those Nike lace trainers which aren't too bad. Dh picked them out of the box and said, 'Oh God, they are so girly' which made me feel that they must be ok. I did worry that they weren't really gym wear, but deliberately didn't ask the man in the shop in case he said they weren't and then I would have to buy some breezeblocks. I'm not stupid!

I think the adidas lace ones are great. You'll be the most stylish woman there,

aloha · 09/08/2007 16:02

They are really comfortable, and I thought to myself, 'If Thomcat approves of them, they must be cool'.
You are my official trainer stylist!

oh shut it fish face.
Stop showing off.

Aloha doesn't actually intenbd to do any real workign out.

She'll be there in her sweatbands and cool trainers and fliting around and mainly hanging out near the water cooler!

aloha · 09/08/2007 16:10

Don't like treadmill. Makes me feel sick and itchy & covered in hives (honestly, I am actually physically allergic to exercise! Exercise-induced urticaria). Plan to do more static things - eg stairmaster, crosstrainer type stuff, and those exercises with weights for flabby arms and thighs. Induction at tomorrow at 10am. At least my feet will look OK, eh?
(And I'm not taking them back!)

OP posts:
aloha · 09/08/2007 16:12

anyway in Ye Olden Dayes people used to play Wimbledon in canvas plimsolls and run marathons barefoot. We are such wusses these days

OP posts:
thomcat · 09/08/2007 16:14

I have such a great pic of you in my mind Aloha. You'll be the one who pauses to take a sip of water on treadmill without stopping it and goes flying back and off treadmill and ends up draped on your back over an exercise ball!

You'll be lying on bench trapped by a weight that's too heavy to lift!
