This is too much for a wedding, right? (As a guest)

I brought this out the other day, sighing and telling DH that I never got to wear it. It is a silk cocktail dress from the 19 50s.

He said "why don't you wear it to your friend Graham's wedding this July". My initial reaction was: no, far too OTT.

But now, stylish people of MN, I am not so sure so I need your help. Is this OTT for a guest? I would probably wear it with nude heels/bag, no hat and a cropped ivory tailored jacket. Discreet jewellery but a bold red lipstick.

Ooo, I think the bow on the back might be a bit much. It is fabulous though.

How chill is the bride?

Happyandglorious · 18/04/2019 20:11

Agree with hermione. Can you remove the bow.
If the rest of you is understated -I say go for it.
Fab colour. Nothing wrong with making an effort and looking great.

Rtmhwales · 18/04/2019 20:12

It's awesome, I'd be thrilled to see someone in that at my wedding. Go for it.

wallymum · 18/04/2019 20:13

It's amazing. Go for it!

CharlotteUnaNatalieThompson · 18/04/2019 20:14

Definitely not too much for a wedding. Do it! What a fab dress

babysharkah · 18/04/2019 20:14

What sort of wedding is it? I think the dress is fabulous.

Guestdr3ssq · 18/04/2019 20:15

Ha, it IS a lot, no? Thinking about it, she is pretty insecure and highly strung (lovely, but I wouldn't describe her as relaxed).

I love the dress. Why does my lifestyle not allow me to wear beautiful things like this all the time? shakes fist at the unfairness of it all Grin

That's incredible. I'd have loved to see someone in that at my wedding. Enjoy OP!

Afternoon and evening do. At some lovely stately home type place.

It's breathtaking!

Wear it, unless it's a very simple quiet wedding. I'd love to see a picture of it all accessorized !

Moondancer73 · 18/04/2019 20:16

Oh wow, that is just beautiful. I guess it depends on the bride but it's stunning even if it's no good for that particular occasion.

SansasSnatch · 18/04/2019 20:16

Where’d you get it op? It’s great!

Guestdr3ssq · 18/04/2019 20:16

Perhaps I could ask my seamstress to remove the bow temporarily (it is a little uncomfortable to sit on tbh). Good idea!

nelsonmuntzslingshot · 18/04/2019 20:17

Definitely not too much - bow and all! If I had the figure I’d bloody wear it!

Guestdr3ssq · 18/04/2019 20:18

And thank you all for the lovely comments on the dress. It was from Etsy. Think it is by a designer called Philip Hulitar but the label has fallen off!

I love it. Totally fine for a wedding guest.

Ploppymoodypants · 18/04/2019 20:19

Yep it’s amazing, if someone wore that to my wedding I would be pleased they made such an effort. As long as it’s a fancy wedding, go for it.

JaneEyre07 · 18/04/2019 20:20

I'd say it's perfect for a wedding.

EdWinchester · 18/04/2019 20:23

I think it's de trop. Sorry.

I would hate to feel overdressed. Maybe if you removed the mahoosive bow it would be a bit better, and only if you're slim.

EgremontRusset · 18/04/2019 20:23

Lovely. But not with an ivory jacket, not at a wedding. I think an ivory jacket would be ok with a plainer dress even at a wedding, but combined with that one it could risk becoming a bit unintentionally upstagey.

willowandsage · 18/04/2019 20:25

Absolutely stunning and I'd be thrilled to see someone wearing it at my wedding!

MissBPotter · 18/04/2019 20:25

Wear it! Or maybe you never will. The way you plan to style it sounds fab.

Threeminis · 18/04/2019 20:32

Wear it. Exactly as it is. I love it!! So much.

snoozetastic · 18/04/2019 20:33

Lovely

You don't want to upstage the bride though do you? That's the problem with it being too lovely.

How dressy are other guests likely to be?

XingMing · 18/04/2019 20:39

It is FABULOUS. I think you should wear it knowing that it's so extreme you could overshadow a wedding dress. No jacket though. Just the dress, and a wrap for warmth, or highjack your husband's DJ for warmth. Red lips. please.
