This is too much for a wedding, right? (As a guest)

I brought this out the other day, sighing and telling DH that I never got to wear it. It is a silk cocktail dress from the 19 50s.

He said "why don't you wear it to your friend Graham's wedding this July". My initial reaction was: no, far too OTT.

But now, stylish people of MN, I am not so sure so I need your help. Is this OTT for a guest? I would probably wear it with nude heels/bag, no hat and a cropped ivory tailored jacket. Discreet jewellery but a bold red lipstick.

Depends a bit on the fit and your bodies line. On me (curvy hourglass) it would look over sexy but my friend whose much straighter would look elegant in that dress. It is beautiful tho really really gorgeous. We should wear more clothes like that

CountFosco · 18/04/2019 20:41

Tell DH he needs to take you somewhere fabulous so you can wear it. As for the wedding I suspect it depends on your relationship with the bridegroom and bride.

TruffleShuffles · 18/04/2019 20:42

Just wow. I think this is my favourite item of clothing I’ve ever seen anyone post on mumsnet! You must wear it. Oh and like someone else mentioned it must be paired with red lips.

Passmethecrisps · 18/04/2019 20:45

I think it is bonkers amazing

One of my favourite things about my wedding was seeing all of the amazing outfits people wore. I was genuinely boggled at the effort people made. I would be so delighted if you wore this at my wedding. It says that you think the event is fabulous

cushellekoala · 18/04/2019 20:48

I don't know why i am contributing as i am about the least stylish person imaginable but i would think a pasmina or wrap would look better than a bolero jacket.

cushellekoala · 18/04/2019 20:48

I love the dress btw!!

mooglycrunch · 18/04/2019 20:49

Good Lord that's a gorgeous dress. Life is too short not to wear it. Like other people said - maybe not an ivory jacket but everything else sounds spot on. I wish my post baby body would allow me to wear that. I also wish my boring life would give me an occasion to wear it too!

That is an absolutely stunning dress!

I think it could be worn to a v smart and stylish wedding with plain- ish shoes, accessories and bag.

Hassled · 18/04/2019 20:53

I'm in the life's too short to have a dress as gorgeous as that in your wardrobe and not wear it camp. And without a hat I think it would be fine - add a hat and it's a bit "look at me, look at me" but without a hat it would just be lovely.

I absolutely agree with this. I don’t understand this upstaging the bride business. As long as guests don’t wear white, the more fabulously beautiful the dress, the better!

Guestdr3ssq · 18/04/2019 21:08

I am sure I wouldn't upstage the bride - she has shown me her dress and she is going to look wonderful!

Argh, I am an hourglass, but a small one and it's more because I have a small waist than fantastic breasts. So I don't think it looks super sexy on me.

I could do a wrap. What colour? Would ivory still work or too bridal?

I love the dress.

The bow is putting me in mind of a tail feather, though. I think I'd feel like big bird in it unless I got that taken off.

ememem84 · 18/04/2019 21:12

For a wrap I’d go maybe fuchsia. And a fuchsia lip.

timeisonmycider · 18/04/2019 21:13

See now, I just had to check to see if Big Bird has a tail to be sure.

😂😂 Imagine the dancing I could do to this in the bow!!

"You don't want to upstage the bride though do you? That's the problem with it being too lovely."

This. It is absolutely beautiful but this is the risk.

any red carpet events coming your way?! Perfect for that. Or you could try swanning in to a premiere of something, wearing that you'd get away with it Grin

tablelegs · 18/04/2019 21:20

I love this! Wear it op.

YemenRoadYemen · 18/04/2019 21:24

Another one saying wear it (your figure sounds perfect for it) - with or without the bow!

Isth · 18/04/2019 21:26

Oh gosh it’s absolutely fabulous! If it’s going to be a posh, dressy wedding, wear it!

Guestdr3ssq · 18/04/2019 22:16

Thank you all, MN-ers 😊

Gorgeous dress, but it wouldn't be my choice for somebody else's wedding, unless it was an unusually OTT/glamorous affair. I'm fairly conservative, though.

InterchangeableEmma · 18/04/2019 22:52

It's stunning. I'd go with a pearly grey or pewter accessories over nude and ivory though.

MrsXx4 · 18/04/2019 22:54

I would 100% wear it and I wouldn’t change a thing!!!!

gnushoes · 18/04/2019 22:56

Wear it!
