This is too much for a wedding, right? (As a guest)

I brought this out the other day, sighing and telling DH that I never got to wear it. It is a silk cocktail dress from the 19 50s.

He said "why don't you wear it to your friend Graham's wedding this July". My initial reaction was: no, far too OTT.

But now, stylish people of MN, I am not so sure so I need your help. Is this OTT for a guest? I would probably wear it with nude heels/bag, no hat and a cropped ivory tailored jacket. Discreet jewellery but a bold red lipstick.

WEAR. THE. DRESS

Wear it! And post a picture showing us how it looks on you!

Can't see this dress working with a cropped ivory jacket but hard to imagine without a pic. Think it needs to be worn on its own (it's a statement) and like @Happyandglorious said, understated everything else (natural + loose with hair/make up... although a tan would help with the colour). But def not too OTT as long as everything else is tasteful. Lovely dress!

It's wonderful, and I would love for someone to have worn it to my wedding! Wear it.

I'd be inclined to cover it with a longer jacket in the day (even if it frumps it up) and reveal the full glory for the party.

When I looked at my wedding photos I loved seeing all the guests looking glam - I didn't notice what they were wearing on the day though, I was in my own little bubble. I even realised that some were wearing white or ivory, which didn't really bother me either... I was still the only one who looked like a bride.

Please, please don’t take the beautiful bow off. It completely makes it.

fashiondevotee · 21/04/2019 20:00

Personally, I would have it altered so that the bow can be detachable - then you've got more options.

I think, sans bow, it would be nice for a wedding.

If I was slim, beautiful and young enough i’d go for it!!
