Why has everyone got acrylic nails? They're vile!

Well, not everyone, but too many people at work are sporting them imo, I think they're horrible.
Explanations?

I agree. they are hoatchin'. i wore them as a teen - made me look like a tramp, but that was the whole idea!

I don't wear them, but know the lady up the road does as does her 15 year old.

Ah well that will depend on the nails and who did them.

I bite my nails dreadfully and so my manicurist comes to the house and pops some lovely short nails on for me. I love my hands now. Also... when the nails come off my nail bed is still gorgeous.

I love them. I wear a very simple french polish look

I've had acrylics for over a year and they are anything but vile. Mine look really natural

It's when you take them off. My nails are strong now again but it took months.

They're not poncey, they're chavvy.

I've had mine for about 6 months. My natural nails are really brittle and peel easily. Nothing would sort them out.
I keep mine quite short and usually have a light colour painted on.
Once you get used to them, it easy to do most things. I can put in and take out my contacts. I just can't do up necklaces or earrings!

But what about the upkeep-time and cost?

oook how do I say this without sounding rather terse (does that sound chavvy to you!!!), desist with the generalisations and pigeonholing ladies.

Mine cost me 15 a month to keep them in top condition.

I don't mind people using them who have weak nails or whatever, but I don't see the point of having them when your own nails are strong and lovely.

Nicely done real nails will always look better than false ones and it looks NASTY when you see under someones nice acrylic nail to see the dirty ragged nail growing underneath.

Tell me TWO things you can't do with yours and I'll tell you mine.

Gemy, you can hardly see my real nails as they are regularly cleaned with lemon juice and a tootbrush.

The best are the powder gel versions that just set hard on top of your own , then you dont get that yuckyness underneath.

square ones are the worst

I got them done once for a wedding and hated them. They clacked on the keyboard and felt really dirty. It was a pain doing anything with them as well. That's just me though.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...... oh I know... pick up coins that I've dropped. Must be more like the Queen and not carry cash!

My nails look gorgeous. I have the gel type. Lovely lovely lovely. Just had them re-done this evening in fact. Look.........
