Why has everyone got acrylic nails? They're vile!

Well, not everyone, but too many people at work are sporting them imo, I think they're horrible.
Explanations?

hmmm. Well. They do look OK there, I'll admit.

I want more than that for posting such an embarrasing picture!!!

They cost £20 as well, bargin!

WideWebWitch · 13/07/2007 00:14

you look like you've been laughing very very loudly and that in itself is lovely.

I have been drinking wine, I said "hello Smurfgirl" to the picture when I opened it. Y'know, respect and all.

LOL at www's blatant changing of mind because of Marsy and Prufrock having them He he he

I haven't got them but have always wanted them. I was never very good at spending money on myself ... but when I started having good hair (you know, every 6 - 8 weeks at nice salon, colour etc) I have come to see the light ....

Marsy .. what is the difference between the acrylic ones and gel ones and why would one choose one over the other?

MarsLady · 13/07/2007 08:49

The gel is great because if your nails are long but weak you can just have the gel painted/put on them and that makes them hard (like Grant Mitchell .. lol). At the moment I still have tips though as I went on a bite fest

As I said before my nailbed is gorgeous. My manicurist (did I say she comes to my house?) has never wrecked my nailbeds.

Biglips · 13/07/2007 08:50

ive had acrylic once and i didnt like them but prefer gel ones as they are kinder to your own nails plus looks more natural

melsy · 13/07/2007 11:15

I have a recentish piccy of them on my profile. I tend to have a rose or some tropical flower painted on the index only and normally very plainly/simply done.

mslucy · 13/07/2007 11:19

they are a bit pikey but I secretly like them! There's a very glam black lady in the bank who has the most amazing set.

Not that I'd need them, my nails are like talons if I don't cut them at least once a week.

My only worries would be hygiene - long nails and changing nappies anyone?

nappyaddict · 13/07/2007 11:29

i don't like acrylic ones they look really fake. gel are best.

prufrock · 13/07/2007 17:38

Yes, mine are gel too. I always say I will get to the stage of having only gel, no tips, but then one comes off, and the long but papery nail underneath doesn't survive until my manicurist next comes.

Ha Ha at you changing your mind because of me www - is it cos I is so classy innit? Actually you probably wouldn't recognise me now - I've become a total Surrey wife - false nails, highlights, straightened hair - still no boden or 4x4 though.

Gemy · 13/07/2007 19:39

Well Radley, I am glad to hear your real nails are cared for - perhaps I was too harsh and generalising for all the false nail fans

On seeing so many different views and types (gel??) perhaps I really should try them once for myself and then can form an impartial opinion.

Quite looking forward to it now....

melsy · 13/07/2007 19:46

ooh defffo has to be gel on top of your own real long nails. My own are just brittle and never stayed long, always broke, couldnt stop nibbling and knawing, all the edges were eaten bluergh , so this was the best thing. I hardly nibble now and they always look neat and groomed.

ref the cleanliness ,mine are always scrubbed , and when I have them done (every 3 weeks) they use a tool to clean all the underside so they look very neat.

bleurgh to grey dirty yucky falsies, these are very different to that.

prufrock · 21/07/2007 10:15

www.photobox.co.uk/album/thumbnails.html?c_album=2723141 Wickedwaterwitch - have a look here to see my non vile acrylics

nearlythere · 21/07/2007 10:41

i prefer acrylic overlays to gel overlays- i hate seeing the tiny bubbles which always happen with gels.
I have longish natural nails but have an acrylic overlay to stop them breaking. They are kept immaculatly clean and are manicured and re-painted once a week and a 3-week sycle of infills and maintenance, cost me a fortune but better than my ragged old bitten nails with chipped varnish and random lengths!!!
