Is this ok for Black Tie?

Have an event coming up in December which is black tie , followed by a wedding in the same month. I have seen this dress online and quite like it, thinking to pair with midnight blue heels perhaps.
Thoughts?

I'm a size 8 and a B cup on a good day, and around 5"6. Thanks!

I'd agree, old school dinners tend to me more on thr formal side of black tie.

Op has your husband not been to one before? He can advise.

prettymuchaceleb · 23/09/2018 17:13

No he hasn't for a few years. His parents go
Every year though and didn't have much advice.

Blimey, if you're in your 20s stay away from Gina Bacconi! It's v Mother of the Bride

OlennasWimple · 23/09/2018 18:20

Some suggestions...

Paul Smith gold

French Connection long and sheer

Warehouse bargain (£25!!!!) if you have amazing jewelry to go with it

Long with sheer sleeves

Jumpsuit?

Long off the shoulder gown

prettymuchaceleb · 23/09/2018 18:25

I'm definitely going to purchase the Warehouse one just to see what the fit is @OlennasWimple

I go to a fair amount of black tie events and hardly ever wear full length. That dress is fine imo.

OlennasWimple · 23/09/2018 18:29

You really have nothing to lose!

I missed the bit where you said that MIL says it's cocktail dresses, not floor length, so ignore those suggestions upthread. Smile

RickOShay · 23/09/2018 18:30

I went to a black tie do last night and i wore a black velvet jumpsuit with a bit of sparkle. I am 50.
Thinking about it I was the only woman in trousers, but I didn’t feel out of place.

Racecardriver · 23/09/2018 18:31

No. That's a party dress not black tie. But is it actually black tie? What will your husband be wearing?

Racecardriver · 23/09/2018 18:33

This is what black tie looks like. If your husband us just wearing a formal suit then your choice may be OK.

Nice heels, great clutch and it'll be fine!

prettymuchaceleb · 23/09/2018 18:39

What about these offerings ?

Yes husband will be wearing black tie

OP posts:
0teaandtoast0 · 23/09/2018 18:48

That would be fine. Officially, and following the 'correct' rules, black tie means that women should not wear full length dresses. For white tie a full length gown is required, but not for black.

OlennasWimple · 23/09/2018 19:10

Black tie is either full length or cocktail dresses. White tie is must wear full length (and probably gloves and stuff)

prettymuchaceleb · 23/09/2018 19:11

At this rate I just want to look good, I'd say the latest 2 dresses are pretty darn smart !

The red one is gorgeous.

letsdolunch321 · 23/09/2018 19:28

Your original dress is fine imo .... i go to a few black tie events every year - no longer is it long cocktail dresses. Shorter style dresses are acceptable these days.

OlennasWimple · 23/09/2018 19:46

This from Ted Baker is pretty in either the blue or pink, and you could probably get a lot of wear out of it

Similarly, this is very striking but you can dress it up or down

OhTheRoses · 23/09/2018 19:58

I often wear black silk trousers with a silk top or embellished long jacket. I have a very fluid, wrap silver lurex jacket that is good for these events - it was French Connection c2010 - comes out twice a year.

Perhaps I'm old, but we do a lot of this stuff and DH's job is super staid.

I cannot remember wearing long since the early 90's. Even to things billed as balls, although not white tie ones.

prettymuchaceleb · 24/09/2018 13:13

Could I wear the red one to a wedding? I was thinking with a faux fur coat of some description

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 24/09/2018 14:46

They are lovely but I'm not sure you can wear a long dress to a wedding to be honest. It would be a bit out of place...

Bluntness100 · 24/09/2018 14:52

If you wish something that could do both, I think these three could work, all from John Lewis, cocktail dress section, but not cheap.

And depending on your style I adore this and am considering ordering it myself for a wedding I need to attend and would happily wear it with nude sandals and an updo for a black tie event.
