Would you consider a classic red polish suitable for work?

Just asking out of curiosity.

I am returning to work soon and got my nails done yesterday. Asked for a matte red rather than glitter as returning to work.

My usually tactful and lovely manicurist exclaimed "how is that suitable for work?! I thought you were going to ask for a barely there pink!"

Thoughts?

These are my current nails which are perfectly acceptable for my work place. But then again we are allowed to wear dark jeans and dark coloured trainers.

Mauve is lovely.
My go to. But not for my work as I've said before not sure it's appropriate in my line.

Paradyning · 25/08/2018 17:28

It's all about context 😉

aperolspritzplease · 25/08/2018 17:29

I work in a male dominated j distort and my nails are whatever colour I like. Currently bright red but I have never ever thought they may not be suitable for work!

burnoutbabe · 25/08/2018 17:43

Ah yes I'd forgotten bright red nails ability to draw weird lines down important paperwork. Avoid for that reason solely!

Needahairbrush · 25/08/2018 17:43

aperolspritzplease yes me too. I’ve had metallic gels, dots and even fades. I wear sober, conservative formal work wear (no dress down) and pretty much never considered I may have been breaking some unwritten rule!

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 25/08/2018 17:44

Totally fine but nails must not be long

DextroDependant · 25/08/2018 18:37

@Snog yep for real, I love them they are cute and fun. They replace last weeks flamingos.

I wouldn't have red for work, just because I would feel too dressy. It's definitely not innappropriate for work though.

woodfires · 25/08/2018 19:20

Red isn't an inappropriate colour for work. like para I think nails that are a little shorter and like photo 2 work best and look the most modern professional for work.

DrRosta · 25/08/2018 19:46

God knows where you work then. Personally I think those nails are grotesque and they creep me out. All I can think of is the bacteria and dirty that accumulates under nails that long; they are like a nasty shaft of keratin to collect scum. Unless every time you wash your hands you clean under them with a brush you won't be getting them clean.

Colours also very chavvy to compound the aesthetics failure.

I'm at a complete loss to understand why anyone would think really long nails are attractive. a couple of mm is long enough to be flattering and stylish.

Seriously gives me shudders when I see nails like that.

PasteSandwiches · 25/08/2018 19:49

Wow, just wow!!! How bloody well rude - I doubt you'd say that to her face!!!!

leccybill · 25/08/2018 20:07

@DrRosta They are not to my taste either but I wouldn't be so nasty and unkind about it like that!

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 25/08/2018 20:09

Awkward.

kenandbarbie · 25/08/2018 20:49

Yeah I'd say so, it's the most neutral nail colour

Fairylea · 25/08/2018 20:50

Well that escalated quickly! ShockShock

dinosaurkisses · 25/08/2018 21:25

Jesus @DrRosta , that was uncalled for.

This is Style and Beauty, not AIBU. You realise there’s a real person behind each of these usernames?

Judydreamsofhorses · 25/08/2018 21:35

I always have painted nails, often red, and always wear red lipstick. My nails are always short and freshly done - currently a navy Chanel polish. I think any nailpolish colour looks horrid and inappropriate for work, whatever you do, if it’s chipped.

I’m a lecturer, and don’t give a shit if anyone thinks I am trying to attract a mate or “peacocking” (I’m not). Historically this might be a thing, but I don’t believe anyone really thinks about it now.

GorgonLondon · 25/08/2018 21:42

Dextro I never notice anyone's nails, and never get my own done (too much time in the gym/playing guitar to bother with nails) but I would be very surprised to see a professional person with nails like that.

Judydreamsofhorses · 25/08/2018 21:42

Here are mine.

TheDowagerCuntess · 25/08/2018 21:45

I have short red nails at the moment. I'm surprised that a manicurist would express such shock at red nails for work!

This thread does go to show that, uh, nail preferences are such a personal thing...!

Paradyning · 25/08/2018 21:46

Like that colour and length! What is it?

Fairylea · 25/08/2018 21:46

Judy I love that colour!

Paradyning · 25/08/2018 21:47

Is it a dark blue? Gorgeous

woodfires · 25/08/2018 21:48

Very nice judy. I never manage to keep nails for longer than two days!
