Following recent posts I've noticed on the S&B board, I would really love to know what is mutton dressed as lamb? As in, can anyone actually define it or post a picture of someone who is mutton dressed as lamb? To my mind it doesn't actually exist, and is just another way of saying "badly dressed". People seem to use it as in, I need an outfit but I don't want to look like MDAL but what do they REALLY mean by this? if a dress doesnt look right on you then to my mind it's because it's too short or too long for your proportions or you have the wrong shoes with it, or another reason like that. This mutton thing is just lazy talk I think.

I'm getting on in years - in my 50s - and if I get dressed and don't like what I see, I don't think I look like MDAL. I just think I'm badly dressed.

Hmmm. Good for thought, perhaps.

American site but you can’t have everything. 😉

I looked.at that link and I don't believe many of those items look nice at any age.
I'm just back to my original point again.

I HATE that article rosewhite, I read it as a 40 year old woman and feel dictated to and robbed of my personal choice and freedom of style. It’s not a nice feeling. Doesn’t matter what they’re telling me I can and can’t wear, it’s the feeling of rules that I MUST obey.

rightknockered · 22/08/2018 16:15

I read the first few bits in that article, which you obviously cherry picked to fit your misogynistic and ageist mindset, and it's just a lot of drivel. The misguided opinion of someone like yourself, too blinkered to recognise yourself as the enabler of patriarchy.
I'm beginning to wonder about you. Are you a man. Either that or you find yourself caught up in competition with other women for the attention of men, and you don't like this new thing of women over 35/40 who look better and trimmer and present a new level that you can't compete with.
I'm trying so hard not to employ the MN head tilt. Oh look, I just did

rightknockered · 22/08/2018 16:16

That was a response to Rosewhite. Obviously

KatyPeary · 22/08/2018 16:18

Interesting that article has a man’s opinion.
It MUST be true so.....he would know, wouldn’t he. Hmm I’d like to see men over 40 wear spanxGrin.

That article is misogynistic and so terrible. And hilarious all at once. Seems the Instagram folk of 2018 didn’t get the memo about the slogan tees etc etc.

DameDoom · 22/08/2018 16:29

I've seen Brigitte Macron up quiteclose. She looks bloody amazing. I don't love every outfit she wears in the press but hell is she owning her own style.
I think confidence and vibrancy goes a long way.

Bombardier25966 · 22/08/2018 16:32

The "expert" from that article died aged 58. If that's not an advert for doing and wearing what the hell you want for as long as possible I don't know what is!

CressidaEgg · 22/08/2018 16:41

DameDom - I'm very jealous, I adore Brigitte Macron! She doesn't hide her wrinkles or lines or apologise for being over 40. She faces a critical world as though she has every right to be a part of it. Can't link on my dodgy iPad but the photos of her welcoming the French football team home were great. Other women over, say, 60 might have felt obliged to fade into the background but BM was delighted and engaged in all the excitement.

Think I might start my own BM thread 😀

Twistella · 22/08/2018 16:43

I'm 51, chubby and wear what the hell I like.

I love my Stan smiths.

JaneJeffer · 22/08/2018 16:45

This is Linda Rodin. She looks amazing for a "skinny old woman" doesn't she Rose?

Streetstyle older women who look incredible. It might not be what I'd want to wear personally as these styles would not suit me one bit but I can appreciate they look fabulous.
I'm 46 and therefore a lot younger than a lot of the women whose looks I find inspirational and very aspirational. It gives me confidence to not be afraid to enjoy clothes, make-up etc.

While I agree that MDAL is ageist and sexist, there are certain clothes that look ridiculous on most middle-aged women (me!). A male example would be your average 55-year old in skater gear - baggy jeans and baseball cap on wrong way. There is a point where it just feels wrong.

If you are happy wearing crop tops, super short shorts, skin-tight lycra - of course - go ahead. You will be drawing attention to your age - and most people will think your outfit would look better on someone else, but it depends how much you care about that. Life is short and none of us should give a fuck what other people think - so if it makes you happy go for it.

RoseWhiteTips · 22/08/2018 17:10

Good post.

RoseWhiteTips · 22/08/2018 17:13

She absolutely does. But then she is not displaying an awful lot or wearing a skater skirt. And her legs are covered.

RoseWhiteTips · 22/08/2018 17:13

She’s got all her own teeth, too.

BlancheM · 22/08/2018 17:14

I haven't heard that turn of phrase since I was a nipper! Its up there with other such misogynistic gems as 'fur coat and no knickers' and 'tarty'.

championquartz · 22/08/2018 17:17

You’re funny, Mr. RoseWhiteTips.
(I’m being ironic, FYI)

ThriceThriceThice · 22/08/2018 17:22

Aww - thank you RoseWhiteTips

I'm a bit Shock that posters find the view 'depressing' that some clothes look better on young people. I am very happy to be middle-aged, love clothes/style/fashion and think I generally scrub up well when I can be arsed - but have no problem accepting that some styles look much better on my teenage daughter than they could ever look on me.

RoseWhiteTips · 22/08/2018 17:24

Carine Roitfeld looks amazing: she was born in 1954!
