What clothes / shoes do you have that always get positive comments when you wear them?

I've got a dress from Get Cutie in Brighton which is a good 12-15 years old now. It used to be my standard summer 'going out' outfit, but I've not worn it for a few years now having had a bit of a change of style. I dug it out for a gig last week which had a 'floral' theme, and got loads of comments (from total strangers) about how fabulous it was.

It made me think about other things I wear that always get positive comments - a pair of Fly London boots is probably the main one. Anyone else have things like this - not necessarily the clothes that make you look your best, but the ones that always draw attention?

I have two pairs of velvet floral dr martens in black and cherry. They always get complimented. I have had them years and they are still going strong Smile

Hush Ivy dress in black

Topshop Hiccup sandals in leopard

Hush Yasmin maxi dress

Floral velvet DMs sound fabulous People - my feet are just the wrong size/shape for DMs ever to be comfortable, which is a very sad state of affairs Grin

I have a pair of green H&M trousers that people always say nice things about - well, women do. I think hey fall into the category of “clothes men hate”/man repellers. ;) Which is, in itself, superb.

I think it’s the same ones this blogger is wearing in this blog post and not surprisingly the only comment says “great trousers” Grin

Clothes women like vs clothes men like is a fascinating one. Though I'm surprised with the trousers - they're a gorgeous colour, and fabric/colour always seems to have unisex appeal to me.

Found a better pic on a different blog (over invested in showing off my trews what) catchingcouture.com/2018/01/31/the-everyday-pant/ GrinGrin

Very generally speaking i think men who aren’t interested in fashion think women should wear “flattering” clothes and for trousers this means skinny jeans I think. Stuff that’s not odd. 🤷‍♀️

Valentino rock stud flat pointed shoes
Black and white moschino pointed flat shoes
A stunning antique opal ring

It’s the non-boring, colourful stuff that people tend to like, isn’t it? Because you don’t see it that often, I suppose.

I bought those red stiletto ankle boots that M&S did last autumn, and every time I wore them (not recently for heatwave reasons) I was stopped in the street by people asking me about them.

I’ve got some fluorescent green skinny jeans, ditto. Also a bright pink J Crew tank top with burgundy lace trim.

(Disclaimer: not all worn at the same time).

Shiney pewter Clark’s brogues.
Formal black culottes.i often wear them together.

RickOShay · 22/07/2018 23:12

A Hennes dress. It’s shift pink black and yellow. It’s nice, but not that nice, but always gets conplimented.

PatchworkElmer · 22/07/2018 23:25

I have a pair of sugary pink ankle grazers- £16 in Tesco. They’re easily my most complimented item of clothing.

SummerWinter · 23/07/2018 00:23

A pink scarf! It always surprises me when I get a comment as it wasn't expensive and isn't made of anything special.

LittleWingSoul · 23/07/2018 00:40

A lindy bop dress in the 'honor' style... I don't generally do the 50s look but very flattering to my post baby body... Hides the tum but pushes up my milky boobs! And the print is lovely... A skyline of international landmarks on a mustard yellow background.

LunaTheCat · 23/07/2018 03:13

Nettle I am glad about that - I had an awful vision!
For me a couple coats

  • a red velvet 50’s coat I bought in a second hand shop 20 years ago - getting dressmakerto re-line cost more than coat but worth it
  • a new coat I bought for winter which is classic style, sort of 50’stoo with rounded collar. Navy with gold flecks. Cost a fortune but thought about it several weeks before I threw caution to wind!
Eminybob · 23/07/2018 03:41

Some gold Schue Birkenstock dupes. Been stopped twice recently by strangers asking where they are from.

Longdistance · 23/07/2018 04:46

I’ve got a gold flower necklace (not real gold) from TU in Sainsbury’s. It cost me £3 in the sale, and I can’t count how many people have complimented me on it.

CountFosco · 23/07/2018 07:11

I get compliments on my shoes the whole time. I do love shoes and have lots so that's good. Recently my leopard print slipper style shoes have had loads of comments, and my red Puma Suedes and my sequined converse. Think you're right it's the 'look at me' items that get compliments.

1moreglassplease · 23/07/2018 12:01

For me it's a Monsoon dress that I bought a couple of years ago. It has a very bright and bold floral, a deep V-neck and flutter sleeves. It somehow hoiks up my small bust into something half decent. It's hard to miss and always gets compliments.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/07/2018 12:10

A Westwood Red Label skirt that people have crossed the street to comment on.

A lovely Whistles dress with a distinctive print.

Crazy printed skirt.

Pixie boots from Clarks that I have in several colours.

Sadly no longer with us, but I used to have a pair of brown knee high boots that several women chased me down the street to ask about. I still miss those boots. Sigh...

user1494055864 · 23/07/2018 16:40

A pair of h&m black chunky lace up ankle boots - a bit like DM's - covered in a floral print. I've had positive comments every time I wear them, from men and women, young and old.

AuntLydiasSteelyArmPitHair · 23/07/2018 16:48

I have 60 plus pairs of irregular choice shoes and i am always stopped in the street as people want to know where I got them from. Little girls literally stop in their tracks to gaze open mouthed at my unicorn bag and matching hi top flashing trainers :D I also have a lot of 50s style dresses and am always complimented on them. I love bright colours and wear them proudly.

rightknockered · 23/07/2018 16:52

A khaki coloured trench coat that I got in the Whistles sale. this one

OlennasWimple · 23/07/2018 16:56

A royal blue scarf pashmina thingy. It wasn't expensive but it must be just the right shade for me because I always get compliments on it or get told that I'm looking well

thenightsky · 23/07/2018 17:00

An extremely cheap shift dress bought in Tesco about 7 years ago.

Ellapaella · 23/07/2018 17:08

Everything that I buy from Primark tends to be the thing that people ask about the most! I don't buy much there at all unless passing but I bought a pair of shoes and a pair of jeans this year that everybody asks about. Quite annoying really as I've bought a lot more expensive items that I love but Doesn't seem to attract the same amount of attention!
