What clothes / shoes do you have that always get positive comments when you wear them?

I've got a dress from Get Cutie in Brighton which is a good 12-15 years old now. It used to be my standard summer 'going out' outfit, but I've not worn it for a few years now having had a bit of a change of style. I dug it out for a gig last week which had a 'floral' theme, and got loads of comments (from total strangers) about how fabulous it was.

It made me think about other things I wear that always get positive comments - a pair of Fly London boots is probably the main one. Anyone else have things like this - not necessarily the clothes that make you look your best, but the ones that always draw attention?

I've been reading this and realised that I compliment people on things I find hideous 😅 I noticed a pp poster has mentioned that people do that. I don't think I have anything that has had a lot of comments on, I'm going to take that as a compliment 😂

Why would you compliment people on things you don't like?

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 31/07/2018 15:30

A black, long sleeved, below the knee Boden stretchy dress, very Mad Men. In five years of working for my boss it's the only item of clothing he's ever commented on (then went pink). I'm the wrong side of fifty.

Clog boots from Lotta from Stockholm. I wear them every winter (on my third pair now) and they get commented on a lot, often by complete strangers.

A dusky rose velvet coat from Ghost, that I scrimped together the money to buy in the sale about fifteen years ago. It’s a going out coat so hasn’t been over-worn, and I always feel special in it. It always gets “Oh my god I love your coat!” comments, which is nice.

"Why would you compliment people on things you don't like?"

It's how women are brought up isn't it. I say 'nice hairstyle' if someone's been to the hairdresser, similar thing.

MeanTangerine · 01/08/2018 08:16

I often compliment people on things that I wouldn't wear myself, but it's because I love the item (usually bold colour or sparkly) and am just not brave enough to wear such things! If I say I like what you're wearing, I really do.

Topshop brightly coloured embroidered floral slipper style flat shoes

Green rhino print cotton dress (charity shop, about 5 years ago)

Brass octopus necklace ( flea market, Amsterdam, 11 years ago)

Ooooh Minesa your Hush Tori dress is down to £35!!! Bargain.

FrontRowSeat · 01/08/2018 10:51

SuperSuperSuper those Office Maiden sandals are stunning - which colour did you get?

SuperSuperSuper · 01/08/2018 11:32

The skintone and the gold. Both receive compliments.

Ellapaella · 01/08/2018 11:43

Yes @MeanTangerine me too, I wouldn't compliment someone on something that I didn't like or I didn't think suited them, I certainly wouldn't be rude about it, I just wouldn't say anything at all. If they asked me directly for an opinion I'd be polite but spontaneous compliments only come because I really do like something on someone, even if it's something I wouldn't wear myself. If someone looks good I like to tell them.

I have several pairs of United Nude fold shoes like this in a variety of colour ways. Women cross the street to ask me where I got them.

MinesaPinot · 01/08/2018 13:10

FrontRowSeat I know! I got it at that price in Peter Jones right at the start of the sale. I was dead pleased as I'd been tracking it and hoping it would go down. I would have liked the one that was the same style but in green with stars, but they didn't have a 14 sadly, and I'm not sure about ordering a 12. It is really comfortable though, and I had 2 ladies recently asking me where it was from.

PutYerClawsAway · 01/08/2018 13:12

A long sleeved jersey wrap dress with a small geometric tile print from Boden which I've had for years. Gets compliments from men and women (who think its Diane Von Furstenberg or Issa).

A slightly oversized tan leather trench coat I got at a Max Mara sample sale even more years ago, back in the day before children put a stop to such fripperies!

BlameItOnTheNeon · 01/08/2018 14:57

A heavy fine knit silk mix blanket scarf in with colours which sort of merge into each other between emerald and forest green. The colours are so rich and deep, its my favourite and gets compliments every time I wear it. It looks equally good with jeans or a smart dress, and I got it years ago for 50p in a charity shop.
Nail polish in either Sally Hansen's Unbreakable Heart, or Essie's Thigh High, they come out the same colour on me and are my go to red. Always attract comments from men and women.

Gah81 · 01/08/2018 15:05

The below are the things I have had lots of compliments on/been stopped in the street by strangers to ask where it's from (from most comments/questions downwards):

Beige tweed cape (Sands and Hall)

Vintage 50s princess coat (deep red)

Vintage 50s suit with peplum (navy)

Gold lamé off shoulder dress (vintage 50s)

Maroon Zara shift dress

Rust coloured Vivien of Holloway skirt

Cream Zara chiffon shirt with frills

Yellow Boden Richmond trousers

Teal Karen Millen shift dress

Definitely it's the more colourful and standout pieces which get the most attention in my wardrobe. It is odd to me that the Zara chiffon shirt is so popular.
