What clothes / shoes do you have that always get positive comments when you wear them?

I've got a dress from Get Cutie in Brighton which is a good 12-15 years old now. It used to be my standard summer 'going out' outfit, but I've not worn it for a few years now having had a bit of a change of style. I dug it out for a gig last week which had a 'floral' theme, and got loads of comments (from total strangers) about how fabulous it was.

It made me think about other things I wear that always get positive comments - a pair of Fly London boots is probably the main one. Anyone else have things like this - not necessarily the clothes that make you look your best, but the ones that always draw attention?

Years ago I went to the work christmas party in a dress from new look and got loads of compliments.
I gave up on 7/8 trousers because men always ask "Are they meant to be like that or have they shrunk?"
Same with 3/4 length sleeves.
I gave up wearing linen because of comments on my inability to iron.
For some reason, men seem to dislike jumpsuits, culottes and dungarees.
OH hates white jeans.
I usually get nice comments about jeans and the most compliments I;ve had about a pair of jeans were about ones from George in Asda.

Bottega Veneta geek glasses, 13 quid in TK. Famous people have shouted I Want Your Glasses.

I've just remembered the other thing that people always comment on - I've got a winter ski-type jacket from Skogstad that always gets positive remarks when I get it out for the winter. It's very plain, but I think just a bit nicer cut & fitted than the average (and more importantly from my POV very cosy/waterproof!)

I recently got rid of a dress that was attracting too many compliments!
It was nothing special - a mauvy coloured, silk/cotton mix, knit skater dress with a v-neck but not particularly revealing.
It must have been extremely flattering or something, because every time I wore it I got chatted up by random blokes at work, asked by women where it was from, wolf-whistled walking down the street and even followed home from the bus stop one evening!
It was all very bewildering, as I am a very average-looking, size 14, 45yo mother of 3, but in the end I decided I hated that amount of attention and put it in a charity shop bin!

GameOldBirdz · 24/07/2018 16:45

I have a dog tooth patterned, slash-necked jumpsuit that I picked up in a charity shop for £1.99. I get comments every time I wear it Grin

HushabyeMountainGoat · 24/07/2018 18:03

I've had a couple of floral long sleeved midi dresses out of sainsburys that i always get complimented on

IGiorni · 24/07/2018 18:05

A floral sundress from Asda. I tend to wear dark colours and rarely wear dresses, and it’s white and girly so I look completely different in it.

AnaViaSalamanca · 24/07/2018 18:10

A red trumpet maxi skirt. For some reason people find it sexy...

Madbengalmum · 24/07/2018 19:04

This Mara Hoffman dress, I adore it!

What clothes / shoes do you have that always get positive comments when you wear them?
Feawen · 25/07/2018 16:08

That's lovely MadBengalMum.

The clothes I’m most complimented on aren't my favourites, unfortunately! I have a couple of knee-length floral dressed from Dorothy Perkins that get compliments every time I wear them. I think that both are reasonably flattering but a bit dull. I bought them because I needed something that would do for work, rather than because I loved them.

Whereas my all-time favourite work outfit is an ivory silk blouse with a dusky-pink suede pencil-shaped wrap skirt – beautiful materials, flattering shapes – but nobody seems to love that outfit like I do!

foxtiger · 25/07/2018 16:12

A very plain black short-sleeved jumpsuit from New Look. I would never have expected to find a jumpsuit that suited me (I'm shortish and size 18) but this one really does and everyone likes it, even my dad, who never really notices clothes. And some black Ruby Shoo shoes with black and red flowers on them. Curiously I've never worn both those items together - maybe I should.

whiteonesugar · 25/07/2018 16:46

A yellow printed kimono from New Look which always gets comments, a colourful cardigan from Topshop from about 4 years ago and a necklace I have from a cheap online place but i think Zara did similar, its the sort of thinkg you stick on to jazz up a plain outfit.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 25/07/2018 16:58

This dress which is far too big so is sometimes worn as a jacket.

A pair of rose gold brogues from Asos which were the last pair and cost next to nothing.

A 70s nylon leopard-print dress I bought in a charity shop for a tenner over 20yrs ago.

VelvetKitty · 25/07/2018 17:03

A red/pink and black leopard print style swing dress with 3/4 sleeves that I got about 4 years ago from Tesco. It never needs ironing so it's my lazy day work dress paired with black tights and boots and every time I wear it I get compliments or people asking where it's from! I think it was only about £12!!

LunaTheCat · 25/07/2018 20:21

Interesting how for most of us the clothes that get comments are not minimalist Scandi chic but colourful, brave clothes...

banivani · 26/07/2018 12:40

Feawen I think that outfit sounds lovely and I'd definitely compliment you on it!

LunaTheCat

I sometimes have a suspicion that people are so taken aback that they want to say good god what are you wearing but manage to twist it into approval instead haha

MinesaPinot · 26/07/2018 14:09

I've got a navy blue cotton floral dress from Sainsburys. It's what my mum would describe as a 'shirtwaister' dress, albeit that it's got a dropped waist IYSWIM. It's got to be at least 3 years old, maybe more. Every time I wear it, without fail my designer-clad boss always says 'I love that dress, where's it from again?'

I also have had some lovely comments whilst wearing my new Hush purchases recently (blue/white gingham Tori dress and the orange panel dress).

poppym12 · 26/07/2018 15:24

A fit and flare dress from a Gap sale ages ago. I trundle it out once in a while as is it's quite flattering. Best 7 quid I've spent on clothes.

SuperSuperSuper · 26/07/2018 22:43

A bright yellow dress from Boden. It's 13 years old.

Recently, my Office Maiden sandals (bought a few weeks ago following a thread on here).

whattheheck2 · 28/07/2018 09:47

I bought an emerald green pencil dress from Zoe Vine a few years ago, and I always get loads of compliments when I wear it out. But what I love about it most is that it's so comfortable and stretchy-If I go out for dinner and eat too much, or I have put on a few pounds, I still look and feel great in it!

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/07/2018 13:29

These leather trainers from Paul Smith get attention wherever I am, from both men and women. They're universally adored.

And this dress from M&S. Every single time I wear it I get compliments. I'm losing weight so it's days are numbered though, it won't make it past autumn.

And this necklace by Tessa Metcalfe. I've had it for 3 years and it's a favourite of mine. It seems to get the most compliments from airline crew and airline lounge staff for some reason but seems to be universally popular.

Those Paul Smith trainers are fabulous! Just perfect to pep up plain jeans.

BettyBooHoo · 28/07/2018 15:51

Taupe suede, open toed ankle boots from Office. They are stylish and look good with everything.

Black suede, cage heels from Steve Madden. Sexy as Hell but still sophisticated.

Slouchy, grey roll neck jumper from All Saints. Understated but obviously expensive looking.

Judydreamsofhorses · 28/07/2018 15:59

I have several things that people always comment on. I actually do love all of them.

An ASOS midi dress in leopard print, which I wear with gold Nikes.

A paisley print a-line just-above-the-knee dress with a pussy-bow neck from French Connection, which is about 12 years old now. I paid quite a lot for it then, but cost per wear it has paid fir itself, as it’s gone from being an “out” dress to a work dress.

A necklace from Tatty Devine which is a red lipstick. I got this as a gift from students and it was such a fab present.

An acrylic brooch of David Bowie’s face, which I wear on my denim jacket. This was a present from my friend via Etsy.

I don’t wear this much now, because it is so expensive to get cleaned, but I have a tan vintage suede coat, calf length with a huge faux fur collar, and I would regularly get stopped and asked about it. (I paid £30 for it, and dry cleaning it costs about £50.)
