Yes, I saw that. Philip was just trying to find somewhere to belong, wasn't he? Poor Charles was desperately unhappy there. He made sure that his sons went to Eton!

QueenOfTheAndals · 23/07/2018 22:01

Poor Charles, after that episode I just wanted to give him a hug! I know it was fiction but he's said himself how much he hated Gordenstoun and how he was bullied there, so there was some truth to it.

The Nazi funeral scene from The Crown, it's quite something. The scene with Philips parents definitely uses a good deal of dramatic licence!

His father ignored him, and his mother had her own issues, as they say. I've seen the photographs from that sister's funeral, though. It was very grand.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/07/2018 10:22

Alice of Battenburg was quite a character - she is commemorated at Yad Vashem for sheltering Jews during WWII and later founded her own order of Greek Orthodox nuns. She turned up at the Queen's coronation in full habit and veil!

I was pleased to see that William visited her grave in Israel when he visited recently. I have seen pictures of Philip and his other sister visiting. She lived out the end of her days in Buckingham Palace. I think Princess Anne looks like her.

I’m currently reading the Lady Colin Campbell book on the Queen’s marriage. There is a lot devoted to Prince Philip’s early life. His 4 sisters were just married off as Quickly as possible as the family was basically penniless.
I think the crown, although dramatic, explains how members of the royal family have despite their wealth, been victims of circumstance.
I really felt sorry for the young Prince Charles. Although I would say that Diana also insisted on Eton for William & Harry.
Poor old Charles has been a victim of many other family members needs. Eg Elizabeth becoming queen young, so no time for him. Phillip being put in charge of his schooling. Whoever dissuaded him from marrying Camilla the first time.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/07/2018 12:17

Has anyone ever read Kitty Kelley's book on the Windsors? It's hilarious - I think she makes half of it up. Still, there must've been a grain of truth in there as it's still banned in the UK!

I read a really great book called "Fergie Confidential". She was so grasping! So demanding of freebies early on in the marriage, even from Garrards, the crown jeweller. Even on a smaller scale, taking the girls to Thorpe Park etc she expected it for free. She was like a child in a sweet shop. Then she got her head turned by those dodgy Blokes.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/07/2018 13:04

Going back to style for a moment, how does Queen Rania look so effortlessly cool in desert temperatures? I like the shirt and trouser combination, I'm sure Meghan will be copying that before long!

I remember seeing a documentary with Fergie where she was going through all the freebies that had been sent to her for her and her daughters. She was also wafting around in a bathrobe take ice baths, but I digress. I remember loads of R&B shoes and I think Burberry, because Wills and Harry had been given and photographed in the brand and she wanted the same. It was quite obscene and greedy.

SenecaFalls · 24/07/2018 13:27

I think Princess Anne looks like her.

And is named for her (third name is Alice). Also the Meander tiara, with its Greek key design, owned by Anne and worn by Zara at her wedding came from Alice of Battenberg.

Clionba · 24/07/2018 13:42

Queen Rania looks so elegant and cool. Meghan would look great in that outfit, although according to some reports Harry doesn't want her to wear trousers, and has vetoed recent outfits in favour of dresses. Do we think that's credible?

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/07/2018 14:22

@SenecaFalls That tiara is probably my favourite out of all the royal ones, it's gorgeous and slightly different too.

@Clionba I think it's safe to say that that's the least credible story I've heard in a long time! I doubt she'll ever wear trousers for any event where the Queen is present but definitely for others she will.

I found a picture of her wearing it. She was really quite lovely. I think Prince Andrew has a bit of a look of her.

@Clionba totally agree with Queen - sounds most unlikely.

Right. Back to that Spanish video. I've watched it a few times now. Does anyone else at the beginning granny (Sofia?) try to put her arm around one of the children and the girl shrugs it off. THEN Letzi intervenes and we know the rest. Could it be a problem between granny and g/children? Any other views?

Also, thanks to PP for run down on Swedish RF. Fascinating. 👑👑👑

Clionba · 24/07/2018 16:27

Seneca and Queen That tiara is lovely, different and dazzling!
So true about the trouser story! I think Meghan will wear conservative clothes when HM is present, but Megs will go with her own style, Harry won't mind!
Table The Spanish Matter : it does look as if Leti doesn't want Sofía to pose with the girls, but Leonor does knock granny's hand away. Felipe intervenes. Leti is definitely blocking the way.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/07/2018 16:34

Harry also walks around looking like a man who can't believe his good luck. He's utterly smitten with Meghan and I doubt he'd ever tell her what to wear!

It was that video that prompted Marie-Chantal "of Greece" to throw shade at Letizia about the importance of family or some crap like that. Totally unnecessary!

OP posts:
Clionba · 24/07/2018 16:39

I've never seen Harry look so happy and relaxed. He's lost that pinched look he had around the eyes. They're a lovely couple.
Did Marie Chantal throw shade on Leti? Cheeky!

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/07/2018 16:48

I think she’s just jealous because she’s only a fake Crown Princess and Leti is an actual Queen!

OP posts:
Paradyning · 24/07/2018 20:48

Rania looks amazing. Totally channelling the Meghan look! Or vice versa

evilharpy · 24/07/2018 21:01

I’d love to see a full length photo of Rania in this outfit. Those trousers look lovely.

QueenOfTheAndals · 25/07/2018 06:43

Rania's Instagram is full of gems, this shirt and skirt combination for one. She always looks incredibly chic and proves you can do conservative without looking frumpy or matronly. Kate could do worse than take a leaf out of her book!

OP posts:
QueenOfTheAndals · 25/07/2018 06:54

@Clionba Yes, Marie-Chantal took to Twitter to chastise Letizia. Queen Sofia is her husband's aunt. This is from the Express but it's just a summary of what happened. And the comment about Letizia "showing her true colours" implies that she's been bitching about her for a while!

OP posts:
Clionba · 25/07/2018 08:18

Thank you. Goodness me!
I also agree with you about Rania and Kate. Rania looks business like, conservative and chic. None of those awful coat dresses!
