I'm in Japan everyone is wearing wide leg jeans/trousers I feel really dated in my skinnies, anyone else feel the same?

I tried some nice ones in Zara really soft washed denim. I'm thinking about it.

I always thought most women looked like Miss Piggy in skinnies, especially when they were paired with high heels, so its a blessing really!

What an unpleasant comment. And no, I don't wear skinnies.

A1Sharon · 06/04/2018 11:17

I bought a new air of jeans recently and they aren't skinnies! First time in ages.
They are Gap real straight, and I really like them.
I agree that skinny are starting to look a bit dated, I definitely felt ready for a change.

I like straight legged jeans, but still like wearing skinnies occasionally, so will continue. I don't think they have become dated in the way bootcut jeans became dated, either that or I'm starting out on the parts of frumpy middle age.

I’d love to wear some high waisted loose/boy cut jeans over a tucked in top and some flats but I’m fat and 35 and pregnant and short so I’d look hideous. I have grand plans for next year when I’ve birthed my last baby and will I hope lose enough weight to have a choice about what I wear (I’ve been a 16 since DS1 and skinnies with a longer top has been my jeans wear of choice). However at 5ft 3 with boobs and hips even as a size 12 pre babies I felt relaxed jeans made me look fat. I love the look but not on me.

DelphiniumBlue · 06/04/2018 11:30

Thing is, wide trousers are really impractical for British weather, there's nothing worse than heavy wet denim flapping around. Although to be fair, that wouldn't happen with the cropped version. But everyone looks dreadful in cropped trousers, even willow y types .

ballroompink · 06/04/2018 11:31

I wish the shops here would get the memo about skinnies being over then! Have just been looking around for new jeans, preferably wide legged or boyfriend, and all the high street shops here are a sea of skinnies and jeggings with the odd pair of wider ones seemingly only in H&M!

Bluntness100 · 06/04/2018 11:41

What a horrible thing to say about other women, sadly for you the comment says more about you than the women you're slagging Off.

Personally I think you should wear what suits you, not just blindly follow fashion. I remember the last time wide legged jeans came in and they never really took off, too impractical and hard to wear. They can make your bottom half look huge.

Everyone I know is still wearing skinnies, inc my 20 year old student daughter and all her friends, so they also missed the memo 🤣

LaContessaDiPlump · 06/04/2018 11:43

I look awful in wider leg trousers so will wear my skinnies forever!

shirt · 06/04/2018 11:51

The Japanese are not pear shaped and tend not to be overweight with love handles either!

Butterfly1975 · 06/04/2018 11:52

Ballroom - I agree it's not easy to find anything other than skinnies in the shops! I've been looking for some Hush style cropped flares (can't afford Hush prices Grin) and have tried everywhere local to me to no avail Hmm

I've never been a fan of skinnies personally as I'm completely the wrong build for them (small pear). I'll be delighted when they are finally on the way out!

shirt · 06/04/2018 11:54

@The8thMonth "Everyone in Japan has been wearing wide legged, shapeless clothes for a long time... They are quite conservative on how they dress and don't really do anything other than baggy..."

This is definitely true. The Japanese do not do 'skinny' anything. Tops are loose and layered and oversized. Bottoms are billowing, whether that be skirts or trousers. The 'fanny grazers' as a PP so tastefully put it, are only really worn by teens in cities, who have relaxed parents!

MadMaryBoddington · 06/04/2018 12:00

I just bought two pairs of skinnies, having worn straight legs all winter. Dh, who never notices anything, looked up as I went out last night and said “Ooh I like that look on you”. I agree with him that they suit me better. So I’m quite happy with my purchases.

BrazzleDazzleDay · 06/04/2018 12:11

I love a wide/flared leg. Only ever wear skinnies if its really snowing/really heavy rain so I can wear boots. I suspect I might like them a bit better if I didnt have such wide feet and felt comfortable wearing "cute" shoes

Mercurial123 · 06/04/2018 12:22

I just bought some straight legged jeans and some black cotton wide leg trousers from Muji's Labo collection. I've decided I'm happy enough with my boyfriend jeans. I do love the Japanese style they also have a thing for Trench coats.

I guess once decent Boyfriend jeans which I love the look of aren't so ridiculously expensive (at least the ones I like) then we will all be wearing them soon.

Zoflorabore · 06/04/2018 12:35

I'm in Liverpool where people really really care about clothes Grin

Skinnies are still everywhere.

My teen nieces came to mine over Easter and both had new ones on with tons of rips at the top rather than the knee length rips that were out a few years back.

Everyone I know wears skinnies.

Brittanyspears · 06/04/2018 12:44

I also live in a trendy uni town on the SE coast...hmmm must be the same one! B Town!
I still wear them but I also wear Mom jeans and flares.
Very long skinnies with the fabric gathered at the bottom are very dated, but cropped just above the ankle are still acceptabled.

Floisme · 06/04/2018 12:52

Skinnies are more practical in bad weather so of course they're going to be more popular and hang around longer in the UK, especially at the moment. Even I've been wearing them. I've also been wearing my weatherproof Seasalt coat and been very grateful to have it - doesn't make either of them fashionable.

I don't live anywhere that's known for fashion but it's noticeable how many people have started walking around in wide legs just in the last few days, as if they've been waiting for a bit of warmer weather to make the switch. It's just part of life - eventually enough people get bored of a look and things move on.

ballroompink · 06/04/2018 13:08

Just seen that Uniqlo have got boyfriend jeans for £24.50! Has anyone got them and are they any good if so? Am not near any stores...

Bluntness100 · 06/04/2018 15:14

I agree. The thing about skinnies is the practicality, they are the easiest to wear with boots, hence as we are just coming out of winter, they have hung around.

I think also there are enough of us who like them and are not dedicated followers of fashion, as well as the fact decent jeans don't come cheap, and finding good fitting jeans you're comfy in and that flatter, isn't the easiest shopping task you'll ever set yourself. So hence a reticence for many of us to change. It would have to be soenething good and not just the whim of some fashinista for us to switch out of them. It took an age before everyone gave up their boot cuts. I used to love mine, now I feel like a 90s throw back. I have straight legged ones also, but again the skinnies work better with boots and I'm not packing them away for summer just yet,,,

Teateaandmoretea · 06/04/2018 15:21

The great thing about skinnies is you don't have to iron them. I am slightly confused about Japan leading the world on fashion also, but I know little about fashion so perhaps that's just me. In terms of Australia, I doubt I'd have been wearing them there in the summer either.

Woofygoldberg · 06/04/2018 15:26

I've just bought some straight leg high waist jeans, love a boyfriend fit too.

All the trendies near me are still wearing them, girls seem to all have a uniform of ripped high waist black skinnies with a cropped T-shirt and trainers.

Occasionally wear Skinnies, but I really haven't got the legs for them, they are great in wellies & walking boots.

Dancingincircles · 06/04/2018 15:34

Brittany yep thats the one Grin I guess we have all been tucking our skinnies into our boots as it's been more practical over winter.

I only have one friend who wears mom jeans and although she has an amazing figure they do her rear end no justice at all. Which is probably why none of the rest of us have followed suit.

I agree skinnies that are baggy at the ankle are a definite no-no but then they always kind of were really. As is the colour and distress etc which I'm very fussy about.
