Should I buy a velvet blazer?

I am lusting after a black velvet blazer in the Massimo Dutti sale. It’s beautiful. But I’m a bit confused about velvet... Coukd I wear it out in the evening in spring / summer or will I look ridiculous? If so, will it still be fashionable next winter or have I missed the velvet boat?

Absolutely adore very fitted dark green or navy velvet jackets

I had never even heard of this shop and most likely wouldn't have gone in even if I trundled past.
But I've looked online and saw they have a shop in Bluewater which is across the bridge to us.

You're right floisme I shouldn't call velvet a classic really but I think I meant it's a fabric that will always be wearable ...at some point. But then I tend to hang onto things in the hope they'll look & fit okay second time round. The navy blazer is gorgeous. Not so keen on the one with gold buttons though.

peonylover22 · 18/03/2018 19:23

Right, I’m going to buy them both. The wool one as close to perfect as I’ve found and I can always change the buttons. And I don’t want to be haunted by the loss of the velvet blazer...

Do It

You've thought a while, it's not a mad impulse buy and you love them.

I try to do the 24 hours reprieve unless its something that I've really been searching for .
99% of the time if I give it 24 hours I know one way or t'other.

I have a wine coloured velvet blazer i live in.

So versitile and feels bit dressier for evening

Go for it!

NormHonal · 18/03/2018 22:04

One of the more enduring items in my wardrobe is a velvet blazer. It was a complete bargain about 20-odd years ago and I wear it again and again and again. Often with large breaks in between to give it a rest, but it keeps coming back.

BikeRunSki · 18/03/2018 22:07

Yes!!!! I used to have a beautiful charcoal grey velvet blazer, which I gave away. I miss it every day!

LBOCS2 · 18/03/2018 22:10

If it fits well, buy it. Buttons can be changed extremely easily whereas a well fitting blazer which is the right length of you is a difficult beast to find, and you should embrace it at every opportunity.

peonylover22 · 19/03/2018 19:14

Well I’ve crumbled and bought both. And the Chanel-esque embellished cardigan too. In for a penny, in for a pound. Very excited about my blazer haul

I was just wondering what to wear to a hen party at the weekend and this thread has just reminded me of my gorgeous cropped velvet blazer that will be perfect with my new silk blouse and skinnies! Thanks op Wink

Oh, and all your purchases are gorgeous. Well wear.

Piccolino2 · 19/03/2018 21:42

I’ve loved this thread OP, glad you bought the blazers but now you’ve got me wanting one! The MD blazer is too dark for me but I did find a pink one (!) on Boden. It looks like a really pretty pink, obviously not a classic like navy or grey (I don’t wear black), but I’m hoping it’s beautiful nonetheless.

Post a pic when it arrives. Hope you love them. X

Dancergirl · 19/03/2018 21:47

God I LOVE the velvet one! Now do I need one??

peonylover22 · 19/03/2018 22:20

Grainne that sounds like a fab hen party outfit. Piccolino that sounds lovely - there’s lots of good Boden deals at the moment if you need a little encouraging, I managed to use a 20% code and £25 of free gift vouchers this morning...

Oh and Dancergirl, yes, yes you do. Otherwise you will be haunted by the loss of it...

@peonylover22, I already spent my Boden vouchers yesterday (oops!) and couldn’t get the 20% off to work on it aa it’s in the sale but now very excited for it to arrive. Hopefully we’ll all have gorgeous velvet blazers to wear!

I do remember having a burgundy and a black one in my teens from Miss Selfridge, I used to feel so posh wearing them!

GrainneWail · 20/03/2018 00:10

I just remembered I have a gift voucher for a shopping centre. There's a Massimo dutti there...

Dancergirl · 20/03/2018 07:43

Ordered velvet blazer Blush damn you S&B!

peonylover22 · 20/03/2018 11:15

ALL my blazers have arrived! And I love them all. The velvet blazer is sublime

@peonylover22, yay! Is the navy really as dark as it shows on the website?

SorrelForbes · 20/03/2018 11:42

I've ordered it too! I'm usually an 8/10 and have tried things on in their stores which seem to co e up large. However, the size guide calculator on the MD site advised me to order a 12. I E see up ordering a 10 so please can someone reassure me that the sizing is fairly true to norm?

SorrelForbes · 20/03/2018 11:43

*come up

  • I ended up
peonylover22 · 20/03/2018 11:53

I’m a 10-12. I’d always go for a 12 in jackets and the 12 in the velvet blazer and wool blazer are true to size. The Chanel-esque cardigan is possibly too big. Going to order a 10 as well and see.
The velvet blazer is not as dark as it appears on the website - it is richer and more opulent in real life. Will try and take some pictures later, can’t do too much fawning over shopping delights / peacocking in front of the mirror as sure my boss thinks I do too much shopping already Blush

Pictures of velvet blazer. I love it. Not entirely sure where I’ll wear it or what I’ll wear it with, but I definitely love it. The flat picture is a good representation of the colour in real life but doesn’t do it justice.

Embellished cardigan. Is it too big, do you think? It’s more like a bomber jacket fit which isn’t quite the look I was hoping for...
