Should I buy a velvet blazer?

I am lusting after a black velvet blazer in the Massimo Dutti sale. It’s beautiful. But I’m a bit confused about velvet... Coukd I wear it out in the evening in spring / summer or will I look ridiculous? If so, will it still be fashionable next winter or have I missed the velvet boat?

Looks gorgeous peony I cant wait for mine to come. I got a 12 but worried now it won’t fit over my boobs.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 20/03/2018 19:00

I think the cardigan is a bit baggy around the arms.

timeisnotaline · 20/03/2018 19:20

Oh I love it!

Dancergirl · 22/03/2018 13:57

My velvet blazer has arrived. It is indeed very lovely but it's a bit tight across the shoulders (I got a 12). I'm not sure whether to return it or try a 14.... Then it might be too big on the waist and hips (I am top heavy).

MinaPaws · 22/03/2018 14:11

I love velvet blazers. They are so beautiful. Get it.

peonylover22 · 22/03/2018 14:45

That’s a shame Dancergirl. Maybe try the 14 as it is so lovely?
I’ve swapped the embellished cardigan for a 10 and it is a much much better fit.

Do they do free returns peony?

peonylover22 · 22/03/2018 16:01

It says on their website that they do, you get the returns form from your account. Or if you have a store nearby you can return it to the store which is what I’m going to do with embellished cardigan #1. Only thing is that I got a bit overexcited and snipped the label off so have had to artfully reattach it. Hopefully they won’t notice...

I had a blue velvet military style blazer from
New look (of all places) in about 2005 - it made every outfit look put together and I wore it basically every day until the underarms literally wore out. This thread has inspired me to seek out a new one!

SorrelForbes · 22/03/2018 16:46

My size 10 blazer arrived (the site size guide told me to order a 12) and it's huge, at least 8" too big around the waist and chest. The button fell off too when I was trying it on. It's lovely but I'm not sure I can be bothered to order another size.

Dancergirl · 22/03/2018 16:50

Right, I have ordered a 14 in the velvet blazer. And, what would you know - the slim fit boiled wool blazer in bottle green fell into my basket too Grin For comparison sake.

Not very happy about needing a 14 but sometimes I need it on my shoulders and boobs.

peonylover22 · 22/03/2018 17:08

Size is just a number, good fit so much more important. Funny about the bottle green blazer falling into your basket. That happens to me a lot too Blush

Are you keeping the blazer and embellished cardigan peony?

Dancergirl · 22/03/2018 17:22

They've got some nice trousers in the sale too.

DavidPuddy · 22/03/2018 17:24

My husband has a velvet jacket in the cupboard. Royal blue, I think. Probably from the 90s. I HAVE to go and try it on now.

I'm not going to lie, this thread has inspired me, but not as much as good old George.

DavidPuddy · 22/03/2018 17:46

It's closer to navy than royal blue and lovely and thick. From C&A originally and it has a cute "Made in Poland" label embroidered into the pocket.

It is a bit big on me, so I think I would try and wear it open with nothing too bulky underneath.

peonylover22 · 22/03/2018 19:20

I’m keeping them ALL Dancergirl Very extravagant but I do really like them all and can’t choose between them. Now happy with the wool blazer being an open style but still not 100% convinced re the buttons. I know they’re meant to reference the Balmain blazer but still feels a bit Ralph Lauren type preppy to me. Going to wear it a few times if it ever gets warm enough for a blazer and see if they grow on me... If not, I’ll replace them with something less obtrusive

For the poster who was looking for a thin grey velvet one, have you seen this one in Mint Velvet?

I am looking for one too but this one is too long for me but may suit you.

Dandellion · 23/03/2018 15:32

That was me. That MV blazer is perfect but they only have it in a size 8 Sad

thefirstmrsdewinter · 23/03/2018 15:33

Argh, curses on you all Grin I've just bought the MD navy velvet blazer.

I've got a cheap navy blazer that works hard in all but the coldest/hottest weather. Actually wore it (with a scarf, gloves and layers when required) through a New England winter when I had to do a lot of driving and got sick of taking off/putting on/carrying around my coat. So I'm hoping this one will prove as useful but a bit more glamorous.

Dancergirl · 23/03/2018 15:40

Enjoy your new purchases peony

My size 14 blazer has arrived plus the wool one, I will report back!

GrainneWail · 23/03/2018 18:12

I'm so sad...I've been in Edinburgh the last few days and after all this blazer talk fell in love with a pale blue cashmere Harris tweed blazer. Unfortunately it was £300 so I had to leave it behind Sad

peonylover22 · 23/03/2018 19:09

I’m very much enjoying all my purchases, yet to actually wear the M.D. velvet blazer but have ear marked it for a couple of evening events in April.
How did you get on with the second round of blazers, Dancergirl ?

Interesting to know how everyone is planning to style their MD blazers too Grin
