Anyone else not like bootcut jeans?

Sonotkylie · 15/01/2018 14:33

Just that really? I keep reading that they are back and really flattering so I tried a pair of slim bootcut jeans. Good fit but the flappy bottom material looks weird and they make my (not very long) legs look short and dumpy. Is it just conditioning? I am small and fairly curvy, so I thought these would be made for me but apparently not ...

I do better in skinnies in the summer as I can roll them up and wear lightweight tops and jackets.

In the winter when I’m wearing a bulky coat, big scarf, hat...there’s too much going on up top. Skinnies look out of proportion. If I wear tall boots as well it all just looks too bulky.

I rejoiced when low rise boot cuts came in in the 90s as they suited my pear shape. 80s mom jeans never worked on me either.

FlindersKeepers · 21/01/2018 12:21

I still have a pair of Gap Long and Lean and I am going to get back into them before they go back out again! Grin
My legs are carrot shaped, so the slim boot cut or straight jeans 👖 has been steady with me, I do have skinnies but mostly tucked into boots for balance. Without boots, skinny jeans do not suit me one bit.
Please NO to low rise though!

MaureenNervosa · 21/01/2018 13:26

Flinders I could wear low rise the first time round but not now!

rightknockered · 21/01/2018 14:34

I've started coming round to the cropped boot shape jeans. With a cut off frayed hem, I think they would be nice for summer

CountFosco · 21/01/2018 17:08

Low rise is a young pear shaped trend. My sister loved them and still wears them.

Itmakesthereaderreadon · 21/01/2018 21:55

I have a long body. I spent most of my 20s having to yank down tops. I love, love, love high rises.

ClementineWardrobe · 21/01/2018 22:14

I like them but they've got to be right. I've got a big bum and seriously chunky calves so they work on me; but anything bordering on flares doesn't work. Bootcut is not a flare.

Its got to be a subtle bootcut and exactly the right length too. I hate skinnies, as a pp said they look wrong unless you are a certain build. I really don't like stonewashed skinny jeans.

ClementineWardrobe · 21/01/2018 22:15

Oh and I've yet to find a good pair as the market is over run with skinnies. Just got a pair of straight legged jeans from Sainsburys which are OK for £15.

scampiesandchips · 22/01/2018 05:56

'I keep seeing a stylist known on Facebook for doing colours, wearing them but I think they look dreadful!'

@Estellanpip I think I may know who you mean, and I agree that they look beyond dreadful. Deeply unflattering (especially with a tucked-in top Hmm) and unbelievably frumpy.

There is also no shoe in the world that looks good with bootcut jeans.

AuntieStella · 22/01/2018 07:22

"Bootcut is not a flare."

It is a type of flare. It's just a case of where the flaring starts.

"the market is over run with skinnies"

Which I happen to like, but because not everyone does, I really think that the basic jean cuts should be available as staples all the time.

Fresta · 22/01/2018 07:48

Yes, the problem with bootcut is shoes. They have to be chunky and high od heel in my opinion. Stilettos looks unbalanced, and when wearing flats they drag on the floor. I remember the last time they were in I had to have different jeans for flats and heels, but with skinnies either look ok.

Trills · 22/01/2018 08:23

If we're calling bootcuts jeans "flares" then we should call skinny jeans "tapered".

martakeithy · 22/01/2018 08:53

I prefer flares, wide leg and straight cut and have not worn skinnies or "spray on" jeans since I was a teenager (pixie boots - I looked terrible) However, one of my best friends can't wear wider legs and only suits straight leg.
She had gorgeous, toned, slim legs and I don't.
I have footballer legs, but an hour glass top half, so prefer to emphasise that and not show off my fat parsnips.
Being able to tuck trousers in boots is unusual for me because most boots are made with narrow legs and my feet would turn blue and drop off due to lack of blood circulation.
So annoying to not have a choice of jeans to suit everyone. I agree wear what suits, it will work if it suits you in my opinion.
I never look fashionable anyway. Grin
Possibly, cropped bootcuts or wide legs will work for Winter, they shouldn't get wet and will show off posh boots.

Floisme · 22/01/2018 09:41

Sorry I just use 'flares' as a catchall for 'not straight'. I know bootcuts are different but then not all bootcuts are the same either. And that in a nutshell, is why I think they're so good but also so bad. With skinnies, I normally just have a couple of pairs on the go: dark blue and washed out black and that's it till they wear out. With flares (catchall) I am constantly looking for a better pair cos I know they're out there somewhere. It can drive you a bit mad.

As for there being no shoes - pah! The best thing, the very best thing about flares/bootcuts is that sooner or later, platforms will be back. Now I normally try to stay well away from any kind of heel but for platforms, I make an exception. They're one of my favourite shoes ever - I may even love them more than brogues. And I particularly love that moment when my vision adjusts and I go from thinking 'What the fuck are they?' to 'Hey they look cool.' I'm not quite there yet but it's coming Wink

DrRanjsRightEyebrow · 22/01/2018 09:45

Cropped bootcut/flares are the worst. The most unflattering things ever. If I see someone in them I know they are slave to what is apparently in fashion with no regard for how it makes them actually look

Floisme · 22/01/2018 09:50

Yup, that's me Grin But I think you'll find that slaves have less fun.

ginghamstarfish · 22/01/2018 09:57

Oh yes, agree with that - cropped AND flared is awful, even looks crap on gorgeous models.

Waspnest · 22/01/2018 11:41

I've got all types of jeans (except boyfriend ones WTF are they for, to me they look like you just couldn't find the right size or you've lost a lot of weight very quickly?). I think the problem with bootcuts (as pps have said) is that they were sold as being flattering to everyone when in reality you need slim thighs/medium to longish legs for them to look fab. I've got one pair of cheapy Sainsburys bootcuts and (I think) they look great because I'm slim and they make my legs look really long. I never wear them in wet weather because yes that slowly rising wetness is horrible (that's when skinnies and boots come into their own).

Really don't understand that whole cropped flared look - it makes your legs look stumpy or like you shrunk your jeans in the tumble drier.

Actually having written all that, in real life I don't tend to notice what other people are wearing so my advice is wear what you want and to hell with trends.

Trills · 22/01/2018 15:37

in reality you need slim thighs/medium to longish legs for them to look fab

Isn't that exactly what we said when skinny jeans came in - that they were only flattering if you had slim thighs?

Someone with long slim legs will look good in all the jeans, but it's not the jeans that are doing it.

Waspnest · 22/01/2018 17:01

I dunno. I reckon bootcuts would probably be flattering on someone with slimmish thighs but thick calves/ankles. On the other hand I think that skinnies are really tricky to get away with (especially low rise) unless you've got thin legs all the way down (which I sort of have). With skinnies I always wear either knee length or calf length boots because with shoes/low boots I think I look like a clown with massive feet on the end of sticks.

CountFosco · 22/01/2018 19:01

Skinnies have several advantages:

no wet trousers
shows off awesome footwear
Tends to be worn with longer looser tops that hide your tummy. And however much we might complain about our calves or thighs or bums really the vast majority of women want to disguise their tummy.

CountFosco · 22/01/2018 19:04

I do think the cropped widelegged trousers look awesome actually. Probably because they are only being worn by the most fashionable at the moment. When everyone is wearing cheap cropped trousers they'll look shite.

TheDowagerCuntess · 22/01/2018 19:10

I agree Count - there's a woman at my work who has a pair of cropped flares/bootcuts and she looks great in them.

It's a very difficult look to pull off, though.

martakeithy · 28/01/2018 01:07

Oo oo Floisme, platforms, Fab! The t-bar shoe platform is amazing.
For wet days there are still leggings for people to wear with boots or are they disappearing too, the way they did in the nineties?
I quite like the boots/culotte look from the seventies, or was that MC Hammer?!

Whyarethebestnamestaken · 28/01/2018 09:06

I do like bootcut but have been wearing skinnies lately but have seen the phrase "parsnip legs" and have a feeling that may be me!!

Where can I find boot cut that fit at the waist or higher that are as comfy as leggings, is it impossible?

I think there used to be a thing called pajama jeans a few years ago and they sound perfect if they did them in bootcut.
