Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

JANUARY 2018: Thread 11! Shock we're getting old. A recap of The Snailies categories for those still meaning to get round to them:

🐌🐌 THE SNAILIES 2017 🐌🐌

Wink The Well Hello There - newest and latest find that gets your motor running

Angry The Flusher- money spent on this product would have been better put to use by flushing it down the toilet

Halo The Jack & Rose- the product you’ll never let go of because there’s plenty of fucking space for the two of you on that piece of wood. Damn you, James Cameron, for breaking my poor little tween heart.

Biscuit The LTB- it all seemed so promising, everything was going so great, then they turned out to be a narcissist gaslighting bastard

Envy The Child Prodigy- that one product that’s annoyingly good and isn’t afraid to be smug about it

Smile The Worker Bee- never the centre of attention but has been steadily chugging along like no other

Hmm The Troll- the one where you repeatedly asked, ‘Is this doing anything?’, but continued to use it anyway…

Confused The Flabbergaster- that one product or technique that wasn’t really supposed to be used like that or delivered well beyond your non-existent expectations

Blush The Sinner- oh, admit it because we’re all guilty of it, what did you do or use that wasn’t all that sensible like take an acid bath and had the disastrous results you really knew to expect

Bo will using my Vichy 89 both am and pm be good for my skin rather than just in the am?

botemp · 08/02/2018 20:22

Impossible to say, mint. It's just an added bit of moisture. How's your skin when you wake up in the morning?

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 08/02/2018 20:39

Skin ok in the morning, a little shiny in the t-zone though.

botemp · 08/02/2018 20:49

Maybe try just the t-zone first?

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 08/02/2018 23:15

I want to try the Cerave moisturiser Smile

Botox is on Saturday morning... eek

yongnian · 08/02/2018 23:22

Thanks mint

mintmagnummm · 09/02/2018 06:36

Bo do you mean try the Vichy 89 in just the t-zone first? I'm confused lol, why only the t-zone? Do you think using am and pm is too much all over then?? Sorry if I'm just being bloody thick 😂

EnidButton · 09/02/2018 16:08

Hope everyone's having an okay week. Brew

I've lost the extra 6lbs this week through having anxiety. I wouldn't recommend it but every cloud and all that. 🙄

Used the Merumaya cleanser last night. Hard to judge properly yet but I like it so far. Thinner than the Emma Hardie, removed all make up easily but there was a tiny bit of eye stinging. Not much but it was there. Not keen on the fragrance, (I know EH has a strong smell but I prefer it.) skin felt a tiny bit tight afterwards but very smooth and there are no breakouts or anything today. It'll take 3-4 uses to weigh it up properly. So far so good.

purple15 · 09/02/2018 18:45

Hello I haven’t posted for a while but still reading.
To save me reading the whole thread again which eye cream is it
That has been discussed is it the Vichy under eye cream. And will I see a difference than just using the ordinary caffeine.
And also I have been following the routine for ages now but notice you have all gone off the ordinary. So is the Vichy vitamin c so much better .
If they are similar don’t know whether the rxtra £20 is worth it??

Pupsiecola · 10/02/2018 08:15

Enid I didn't like the smell of that cleanser either. I can't remember now why I stopped using it. I either found it drying or it broke me out (I rarely break out). I miss the EH! I get on well with the TTDO off though, and also an Avene one, the Cosrx (which smells wonderful) one and of course LRP.

Sorry to hear about your anxiety. I am listening to a podcast series called The Life Coach School. It is fabulousness so many nuggets and wow moments. The ones yesterday was on anxiety.

mintmagnummm · 10/02/2018 09:10

Anyone here use a hyaluronic acid serum am and pm? I can't decide whether to use just in the am or both. Also anyone else here have quite textured skin?

Ffsnothingworks · 10/02/2018 09:39

Anyone tried the new REN Toner? Very intrigued by it, but trying to cut down on purchasing skincare I don't need, as I already have Pixi Glow Tonic, which works fine for me.

yongnian · 10/02/2018 10:41

Answering two question in one here....mint I use ha in the am.
And for a couple of posters wondering have we all gone off the ordinary? I still like and re-order quite a few of their products, though have not bothered to repurchase some others of theirs.
Ordinary products I like and repeat - their HA, Vit C, Niacinamide and moisturising factors thing. Also like buffet and Reservatrol and will probably repurchase.
Will not bother again with the caffeine eye thing, Agireline, matrixyl, and one other I can't remember at the mo. Oh also don't like their primer.
Planning to try their colours range though and also their mandelic when in stock.

purple15 · 10/02/2018 10:52

yongnian
Thankyou for the information re The ordinary
Iv been using the caffeine and don’t like it and don’t know whether it does anything. I was thinking of an eye cream.
I am 47 and my eyes have started getting a few lines.

yongnian · 10/02/2018 11:01

Also mint by textured do you mean pore-wise?

yongnian · 10/02/2018 11:06

Hmm I think the jury is generally out on the efficacy of eye creams purple. I like the idea of them as the skin is thinner etc...but I have to be carefully using certain things there as I can end up with milia....I also have a particularly unattractive case of winter dermatitis on my eyelids just now so I'm treating that gently and giving my under eye area a rest in the hope I won't cause any more milia and just generally sweep a little of my spf 50 in that direction as i usually do.
I found the caffeine did zilch for me either.

botemp · 10/02/2018 12:27

I meant just try in the t-zone as the rest doesn't seem to be lacking in moisture, mint.

I think it's mostly me who's had it with TO, purple, but others have experienced the same initial excitement that soon leads to questioning if it's doing anything or worse, causing other issues but rather subtly. A lot of it seems to work in the moment (the caffeine serum falls into that criteria) but does little long term. The Vit C was like that for me, it seemed fine despite the less than pleasant formulation but it was dehydrating me progressively. Also the constant out of stock issues made it really frustrating as it ran out quite quickly. The Vichy is a lot more pleasant to use and provided you keep it in the fridge a little goes a long way.

TO is good for trying things out in that regard but beyond that, I'm personally not looking to constantly experiment with my routine when I already know which proven actives work best for me, I don't think whatever new thing they're pushing next is really going to do something different than what I'm already using.

I'm not aware of a Vichy eye cream (I recall vaguely maybe mint asked about it, but no one had experience with it?) the ones usually discussed are the Kiehl's one which is just really comfy, and my Verso eye serum which I always warn I only use preventatively and therefore can't say delivers in the anti-ageing department but some here have used it and found it effective.

Are those podcasts from Alain de Botton's School of Life, Pupsie, or does it just sound similar?

Do you have a link for the REN toner Ffs?

OP posts:
Pupsiecola · 10/02/2018 12:30

No Bo; Brooke Castillo.

mintmagnummm · 10/02/2018 12:34

Thanks Yong so what do you use in the pm then? By textured I mean pores, filaments, dehydration etc 😩

Bo so is it the oily areas lacking in moisture? I feel like I'm dehydrated all over though as i have congestion on my cheeks

BagelGoesWalking · 10/02/2018 13:04

Purple watched a Nadine Baggott video y'day and she recommended the Olay Eyes

botemp ThNk you so much for your detailed response.
Money is an issue so I think I’ll just keep with The ordinary but maybe miss the ordinary caffeine .

BagelGoesWalking Thankyou will take a look

purple15 · 10/02/2018 13:48

Ffsnothingworks · 10/02/2018 14:17

Ollivander84 · 10/02/2018 14:53

Just had my Botox done. She's done it lightly and I can top up in 2 weeks if I want

EnidButton · 10/02/2018 15:39

When does it take effect Olli? Or is it a straight away thing?

pupsie Thank you, I'll check that podcast out. It's calmed down a bit today thank goodness.
