Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

JANUARY 2018: Thread 11! Shock we're getting old. A recap of The Snailies categories for those still meaning to get round to them:

🐌🐌 THE SNAILIES 2017 🐌🐌

Wink The Well Hello There - newest and latest find that gets your motor running

Angry The Flusher- money spent on this product would have been better put to use by flushing it down the toilet

Halo The Jack & Rose- the product you’ll never let go of because there’s plenty of fucking space for the two of you on that piece of wood. Damn you, James Cameron, for breaking my poor little tween heart.

Biscuit The LTB- it all seemed so promising, everything was going so great, then they turned out to be a narcissist gaslighting bastard

Envy The Child Prodigy- that one product that’s annoyingly good and isn’t afraid to be smug about it

Smile The Worker Bee- never the centre of attention but has been steadily chugging along like no other

Hmm The Troll- the one where you repeatedly asked, ‘Is this doing anything?’, but continued to use it anyway…

Confused The Flabbergaster- that one product or technique that wasn’t really supposed to be used like that or delivered well beyond your non-existent expectations

Blush The Sinner- oh, admit it because we’re all guilty of it, what did you do or use that wasn’t all that sensible like take an acid bath and had the disastrous results you really knew to expect

It's two weeks for full effect but I can see them softening already!

Tsmummy08 · 10/02/2018 16:12

Olli Glad it went well! Mine normally kicks in pretty quick, and is fully set at about 2-3 days - which area(s) did you get done?

Ollivander84 · 10/02/2018 16:25

Vertical 11 lines and horizontal forehead lines

Tsmummy08 · 10/02/2018 17:02

Let us know how it goes - I've been doing it for 12 years, started at 32 as I looked permanently angry!

yongnian · 10/02/2018 21:24

mint I use TO buffet in the pm.
Yes I have texture - pores, scarring, you name it...🙄

JDSTER · 10/02/2018 21:40

Will you be posting before and after photos olli?

Wow 12 years of Botox Tsmuumy you’re an old pro WinkGrin. Can I ask which sort of practitioner you see? Dr, nurse, dentist? Not thinking of it yet but interested in the decision making.

Ollivander84 · 10/02/2018 21:46

I can do! I've taken some before pics of me doing attractive grimaces

Ollivander84 · 10/02/2018 21:47

Oh and mine was done at an aesthetics clinic but the woman who did it is also an a&e doctor

bananafish81 · 11/02/2018 01:08

I can definitely recommend Dr Emma at Dr Sam Bunting's clinic - not sure about waiting list, I don't remember there being any issue when I made my first appointment

I actually saw her last Friday for a follow up for my acne and to have the botox around my eyes topped up

My acne has got significantly worse over the last few months - with no obviously discernible cause. My skin is also pretty parched, so we've switched up my routine accordingly

Cleanser is still LRP Toleraine dermo cleanser both am and pm

But a few tweaks elsewhere:

Skinoren (azelaic acid cream) has been swapped out for Duac (benzoyl peroxide/clindamycin gel) in the AM to tackle the acne

LRP Toleraine Fluide has been replaced by Toleraine Riche (both because my skin is so thirsty at the moment and because the Duac can be very drying)

The Biore Watery Essence SPF was wonderfully light in the summer, but now my skin is dryer, I seem to be much more sensitive to the alcohol content. So we've swapped that out for Elta MD Non-Tinted SPF46, which is feeling much more comfortable

We've gone back from the 0.05% Tretinoin cream to the Treclin (0.025% tretinoin plus clindamycin) gel in the evening

If no improvement after 4 weeks then I have a script for oral antibiotics that I can fill (Lymecyclin 408mg once daily), along with switching my current probiotic to Symprove or Optibac.

The breakouts are frustrating, as there's no obvious trigger (diet could be improved, but no major changes for better or worse over recent months, and Dr Emma said that this kind of acne wouldn't be triggered by diet alone, even with PCOS)

But I have a plan - and am definitely feeling more comfortable for having switched to slightly richer moisturiser and sunscreen.

Botox wise I am absolutely thrilled with the results so far. Didn't have anything in the forehead this time, just a top up around my crow's feet - which softens the deeper lines and improves the crepey texture. Full range of facial expressions, I just look a bit less haggard!

bananafish81 · 11/02/2018 01:20

(The Elta MD UV clear sunscreen is also quite nourishing in its own right, as well as providing SPF - ingredients include niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and lactic acid, so it feels quite soothing on my breakouts, as compared with the Biore)

JDSTER · 11/02/2018 10:24

@bannanafish81 thank you for your update from the clinic. I find it really interesting. I hope your acne clears soon with your change in routine. I’ve wondered about using the Elta MD spf. Would it be ok for an oilier skin do you think?

BagelGoesWalking · 11/02/2018 11:31

The Deciem/Brandon s**tstorm is quite amazing. Luckily, the mods of the Fb group have been allowing comments and have made a separate thread for them.

All kicking off on Instagram. A young women asked if he was ok (just that) and he replied something like "but you don't look well" and then recommended some kind of skin pigmentation product (that's not on the market yet). She's a woman of colour so he's now being accused of racism ... his responses have been completely off the wall. I do wonder what the co-CEO Nicola somebody is doing while all this is going on...

botemp · 11/02/2018 12:03

mint, not always, but often, if you're lacking in moisture skin produces extra oil to compensate. Oily and dehydrated often go hand in hand though.

Bagel, I'm always a tad suspicious whenever NB recommends Olay, she's worked for and on behalf of them a lot.

Ffs, if you like the Pixi I'd stick with that. The Ren toner should be gentler as it's lactic acid based but it's full of essential oils (potentially irritating) and fragrance (though Pixi has it too, but I expect there to be more of it in the REN toner as Lactic has a very pungent smell).

Oh wow Olli and Bagel, that's quite the shit storm. Do you two mind if I copy paste your posts to the Bloggers and Brands thread? I didn't really need much of an excuse to say farewell to Deciem but that's really sealed it for me I think. Will have to think thoughtfully if that will make me stop recommending them to others though.

Bagel, is Deciem's own FB group that you're referring to?

banana, thanks so much for the update again. It's all very insightful and helpful for many, I'm sure. Shame that you're having breakout issues but good to know you're confident with a plan in hand.

Anyone read Hadley Freeman's column about her love of her routine? Bad science or expensive con: either way, I’m sticking with my skincare regime. It's in response to a 'viral' article The Skincare Con which makes some valid points, but for the most part is rather unbalanced and completely misses the whole point of a skincare routine, sunscreen and the removal of it. It's about as intelligible as that BBC programme a few weeks back, assuming we all have completely normal skin, skin conditions aren't a thing, and our environment hasn't changed over the last century Hmm.

Also keep meaning to flag up, Sali Hughes did a really interesting sit-down interview with Dr. Dennis Gross last week, the second part was uploaded yesterday but I haven't seen it yet. Was really interesting (the first part at least) and made my love for thermal waters totally justified (though he suggests distilled water would be fine). Though he loses me a bit with his peel obsession.

Ollivander84 · 11/02/2018 12:12

Not at all, it's all public stuff off instagram anyway!

Ollivander84 · 11/02/2018 12:17

Meant to mention I've been using the kikumasamune high moist lotion - Botemp was it you that recommended it?!
Anyway it's a giant bottle, smells like foam banana and sake. Really soothing on my skin and will be buying again

mintmagnummm · 11/02/2018 13:54

Why is it that when I apply any base it can look a bit dotty??

BagelGoesWalking · 11/02/2018 16:56

Botemp Probably better if you quote directly from Instagram comments, rather than my 2nd paraphrasing. Interesting comments from Dr T Esho, he basically said Brandon needs help and he's there for him. Which is nice on one level but pretty much saying B has mental health issues.

It's the Ordinary and Deciem Fb group.

Ah, I didn't know about NB and the Olay connection. Context is everything, as usual.

BagelGoesWalking · 11/02/2018 16:58

Bo this is the thread in the Fb group.

I've ordered EH cleansing balm. Do not like the Merumaya. My skin has dry patches which it never ever gets as well as a few spots. Definitely the cleanser. So trying to save money has cost me more in the end. Will stick to EH as I don't use it as often as I used to now.

EnidButton · 11/02/2018 19:09

Oh hang on...I accidentally used Elemis cleansing balm first tonight. Then remembered it had Shea butter in it plus it was stinging, so used Merumaya after it. That might be why my face feels tight and burning. It reminds me of when I tried Liz Earle Cleanse and sandpaper polish.

BagelGoesWalking · 11/02/2018 19:30

I tried Liz Earle over 20 yrs ago and didn't get on with it. Can't remember which product it was but I've never understood the love.

Ollivander84 · 11/02/2018 20:02

My Botox has started to work. Wow

EnidButton · 11/02/2018 20:05

Good marketing I think Bagel. I fell for it.

Wow that's quick Olli! I'm really interested in how it feels once it's in full effect.
