Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

JANUARY 2018: Thread 11! Shock we're getting old. A recap of The Snailies categories for those still meaning to get round to them:

🐌🐌 THE SNAILIES 2017 🐌🐌

Wink The Well Hello There - newest and latest find that gets your motor running

Angry The Flusher- money spent on this product would have been better put to use by flushing it down the toilet

Halo The Jack & Rose- the product you’ll never let go of because there’s plenty of fucking space for the two of you on that piece of wood. Damn you, James Cameron, for breaking my poor little tween heart.

Biscuit The LTB- it all seemed so promising, everything was going so great, then they turned out to be a narcissist gaslighting bastard

Envy The Child Prodigy- that one product that’s annoyingly good and isn’t afraid to be smug about it

Smile The Worker Bee- never the centre of attention but has been steadily chugging along like no other

Hmm The Troll- the one where you repeatedly asked, ‘Is this doing anything?’, but continued to use it anyway…

Confused The Flabbergaster- that one product or technique that wasn’t really supposed to be used like that or delivered well beyond your non-existent expectations

Blush The Sinner- oh, admit it because we’re all guilty of it, what did you do or use that wasn’t all that sensible like take an acid bath and had the disastrous results you really knew to expect

I'm eating chocolate right now in a vain attempt to help my rotten headache. It's bordering on a migraine and sugar is supposed to help those. 🤷🏻‍♀️

mintmagnummm · 06/02/2018 06:34

I have the beginnings of a migraine too, started last night.

EnidButton · 06/02/2018 08:40

I can see how daft my last post sounds, today. Chocolate is a trigger for loads of people isn't it?! I shouldn't be on the internet either.

mintmagnummm · 06/02/2018 09:32

Yes chocolate can be a trigger but it's also true that chocolate can help a migraine as well as coffee which again can be a trigger for some. Neither are triggers for me though.

mintmagnummm · 06/02/2018 11:56

Ok so I used the cc cream this morn, obviously it's very early days but I think this has the potential to be the one!! First impressions were very good, love the texture, consistency, and colour! It also blends like a dream. It's definitely not full coverage as it states but for me that's a plus, I think it could be built up easily though and it's not shiny!! Lots of love for this so far, fingers crossed it continues. User I love you 😊💐

mintmagnummm · 06/02/2018 12:23

Acid night tonight woo hoo Grin

BritabroadinAsia · 06/02/2018 12:34

Belated thanks user and Tsmummy for the advice - bought the original formulation Biore Watery Essence (at least I think that's what it is, don't read Japanese characters) and will approach the PC 1% Retinol treatment in a suitably cautious manner so as to avoid my face falling off.

Having lived in Asia for several years I really hadn't appreciated that even the most bog standard pharmacies here stock a wide range of French/Japanese/Korean products. Will investigate further but am happy to be a skincare mule during my fairly regular trips back to UK if anyone is trying to source something particularly hard to get...

botemp · 06/02/2018 13:03

I see your love is easily displaced, mint. Sad Don't mind me. Wink

Ehm, Pupsie, that's a PHA toner, you know the same thing you just rejected in the P50. Gluconolactone vs. Lactobionic, but still the same PHA family. Brand looks a bit curious, it's Polish, but Japanese inspired but appears to be UK based Confused.

Chocolate as a period thing though, right Enid, not a migraine thing, that's how I read it anyhow. Let's not devolve into the chocolate and orgasm talk though, although those are good against the cramps from periods. Bugger it, now I've done it.

Brit, I think I vaguely remember you from another thread, was it in Singapore that you're located? Muji also has some fab skincare we don't get (we just get the less exciting stuff, but thankfully do get the luxuriously soft cotton pads).

mintmagnummm · 06/02/2018 13:21

Oh bo I have much much love for you too, you have given me a skincare routine that I'm happy with for the first time EVER. 💐😘

userallusedup · 06/02/2018 16:13

Oh that’s great that you like the cc cream Mint I hope you don’t have any reactions to it or your love for me may not last Grin

I’ve just ordered some of the active formula vit c, I suspect my skin might be a bit Vit c intolerant as both TO and Vichy made me slightly itchy after a couple of months use. No spots or rash, I just wanted to scratch my face all the time. But I’ll see how I go with this one, if it makes me itchy I’ll give up.

My rapid brow has been delivered but I’m travelling for work this week so won’t get it till Friday. In London at the moment but not doing any shopping, I’m hopeless with finding my way round and can’t deal with the tubes, I can claim a reasonable amount of taxi fares back from work but don’t think I’d get away with swanning round on a shopping spree!

Pupsiecola · 06/02/2018 16:47

Thanks Bo. It was the Lactobionic that led me there. I'm not planning on buying. I'm using my PC acid quite happily :-)

mintmagnummm · 06/02/2018 16:53

Thanks user, usually I react straight away if I'm allergic to something so that's a good start, but it's the spots that take longer to show if something breaks me out. I shall keep you posted! Oh and I love the smell! Glad to see there's no parfum/fragrance in it though so it's not artificial

JDSTER · 06/02/2018 21:06

BritabroadinAsia a mule you say ......

mintmagnummm · 07/02/2018 07:33

Why is it that whenever I come in here and say I'm happy with skin/products the very next day my skin misbehaves 🤔🙄. My skins not looking great and my make up did not go on well at all! 😩

BagelGoesWalking · 07/02/2018 10:52

Mint could it be because you used acids last night?

BritabroadinAsia · 07/02/2018 10:52

JDSTER - I'll have a look and let you know if I can get hold of one!
I'm back to UK in early March so can post on to you then if I can track the product down.

Tsmummy08 · 07/02/2018 12:03

User Re. Retirides, yes I bought my initial (0.5%) tube in a Spanish pharmacy, easy peasy :) I was much happier doing that than buying something of unknown provenance off eBay!

JDSTER · 07/02/2018 19:21

Retirides Tsmummy how long have you been using, any skin irritation, and how many times a week now are you using?

Brit that’s very kind. This is the one. www.ratzillacosme.com/makeup/biore-uv-bright-base-uv-spf50/

userallusedup · 07/02/2018 23:03

Thanks TSmummy my contraband is being purchased, 0.25% strength. My friend did say she doesn’t mind if I end up not wanting it as don’t think it’s that expensive over there and she can use it herself (presume it has a reasonable shelf life) so I’m not fully committed yet.

ElspethFlashman · 08/02/2018 10:19

So CeraVe is launching in Boots on 8th March.

I presume it'll be in the Boots stores in Ireland too, but God knows what the mark-up might be. I got two bottles of the PM online for (I think) about €15 each which was fine. But I imagine the store price will be a lot more than that. May continue to buy online! Confused

botemp · 08/02/2018 12:45

Ok, going to get a bit shouty caps again. The reason why I brought up the contraband with JDSTER was that it appeared she was interested but knowing my rather harsh black and white stance on it could, therefore, be feeling stifled about discussing it on here.

My opinion hasn't changed on the legalities, etc. First and foremost I still think it's a really bad idea to go it alone. Retrides has certain drawbacks, specifically for oily/acne prone skin, it's not like Retin-A, it's a different formulation. If one is considering pursuing it, despite my objections surrounding legalities and monitoring by a professional, I'd want them to have that type of information available to them but I still don't want to encourage anyone down this route, or discuss it like any other cream here, but I'm not going to police it either.

L'Oreal purchased Cerave, didn't they? I assume it'll be in keeping with the low-ish prices in the US, it would be a bit odd for them to suddenly be a high end brand here.

OP posts:
ElspethFlashman · 08/02/2018 12:55

Theres just always a massive mark-up. For example Cetaphil is £8.99 in the UK which translates to €10.

The price in Ireland? €15.

So it's a really sizable difference.

botemp · 08/02/2018 13:04

Ah, I thought you meant US to EU markup. Sorry, Ireland, you're always so nice about keeping things the same price everywhere when it's an Irish brand.

yongnian · 08/02/2018 13:13

mint did you get the CC from QVC? Sorry if you've already said....

mintmagnummm · 08/02/2018 14:31

Yong I got it from the itcosmetics website (uk one) www.itcosmetics.co.uk
