What do you wear to an Awards "black tie gala" Presentation?

When you have been nominated for a business award?

If it was day time - I'd know what to wear

If it was media/arts - I'd know what to wear

But Business/Evening/Black Tie - I haven't a clue?

Please help (not necessarily with an outfit to buy - but more with a style/idea of what sort of thing to wear - if that makes sense)

I think cocktail dress/evening dress. Our work events are black tie and it means "yer best frock" (which is why I don't go cos I don't have one!!)

Kbear · 17/04/2007 18:28

Good luck BTW!

Katymac · 17/04/2007 18:43

Short not long?

I think either, whichever you prefer. I think if you are worried about looking out of place, stick to short. A long evening dress if everyone else is wearing short will make you feel uncomfortable but not vice versa IYKWIM. I think!

Katymac · 17/04/2007 18:53

All my evening stuff is quite low & skimpy

I think I have to buy something

Kbear · 17/04/2007 18:54

I think you need to aim for classy and elegant - skimpy is a no no!!

What's your budget? (Like I know anything about evening dresses BUT I know I wouldn't have fortunes to spend on one!).

Katymac · 17/04/2007 18:56

What about long black evening trousers (quite wide witha split up the side) a black top, and a fancy jacket?

Sounds more like an option I would go for TBH, if you're not a dress person it is a classy, elegant look can be glam too.

Katymac · 17/04/2007 18:59

I am very much a dress person

However I am a lowcut skimpey dress person.....lots of clevage and a swirly skirt

& they don't seem very business like

Damn I hate it when my Mum is right

Getting your bazookas out might clinch the award though .

Katymac · 17/04/2007 19:20

That's what DH said

I have been to many many of these and you would be amazed the variation in what people wear. The men are all in suits, but the women vary from ultra black tie coacktail type dresses, to ball gowns, to smart suits, to skirts and blouses. It really does totally vary.

Katymac · 17/04/2007 19:53

Ilana - that's a pain

I hate stuff like this

if you google "business awards ceremonies uk" using images you'll get lots of pictures (they're mostly of blokes but that's another story...) well done on being nominated and good luck on the night.

I have something very similar to the second black one in purple from Monsoon

I love it - but thought it was too bare & too short (knee length)....I'll see if I can find a picture

I am not into style so feel free to 100% ignore me.

I went to a black tie awards dinner about 4 yrs ago. From what I recall there were lots of longer dresses and not so many shorter ones.

If it was me I would go for something that was between the knee and mid-calf.

Katymac · 17/04/2007 20:45

I wonder if I could get into any of my old dancing dresses.....hmmm it's a long time ago
