Talk me out of buying a Gucci handbag please!

I’ve been coveting a Gucci soho disco bag in black for as long as it’s been around! Have just been given some unexpected birthday money to make it happen.

However, just a few days ago i had talked myself into the Fossil Campbell crossbody in black instead and was going to buy at the weekend. What do i do? Buy the Fossil and pocket the cash for lots of other nice things or get the Gucci? HELP!

Not going to lie, I bought myself exactly the same bag last year and I absolutely love it. However, I managed to get it at duty free and saved a big chunk off the price (as it never goes on sale). Can't believe how much the price has gone up in a year though! What about buying one secondhand? They are incredible quality and will last forever.

Cazz81 · 16/11/2017 16:20

Gucci - although you might get bored of that huge logo.

JeremyCorbynsBeard · 16/11/2017 16:39

To be perfectly honest, if I saw someone with one of those Gucci bags I'd assume it was a fake.

Save your money and get the other one.

TossDaily · 16/11/2017 16:49

Get the Gucci.

WanderingTrolley1 · 16/11/2017 16:51

The logo puts me off.

Notreallyhappy · 16/11/2017 17:00

Buy the bag....don't wake up next birthday and say I could of had last year and Wear the bag excessively 😀😀

PlugInOut · 16/11/2017 17:20

Not very helpful but I would choose another bag altogether, around the Gucci price range or could even go mid-range. Recently I'm obsessed with Kate Spade.

PlugInOut · 16/11/2017 17:21

The mulberry linked above is what I would go for, hands down. The Gucci looks cheap and fake.

Whatsthekey1 · 16/11/2017 17:36

Now i want a Mulberry Lily too!

Gucci is a bit naff though.

iLoveSundaysMe · 16/11/2017 17:49

Lily is lovely but I’ve seen a lot of them.

Darley satchel is nicer, I think.

Spybot · 16/11/2017 17:49

My vote is get the Gucci. I love the look of that bag , it works for day and evening. It is not over the top and will last for years. Just go for it and treat yourself!

Mumsnut · 16/11/2017 18:43

Aren't Mulberrys totally over?

Ohyesiam · 16/11/2017 21:59

The big g s would put me off. To showy, and makes it look fake.
I live in Somerset, where the Mulberry factory is, a friend of mine is part of the management team there, and told me ( when very drunk) that there is a 600% profit margin. So yes these bags are well made , out of good materials, but you are being royally exploited if you shell out for one.

The factory floor workers are on minimum wage of course, but after you've been there a year or two you can buy seconds with, I think a 90% reduction. And you get entered into a draw for a chance to win one every few months.

DistanceCall · 16/11/2017 22:06

If you love it and have had a windfall, go for it, OP. It's a classic.

JW13 · 16/11/2017 22:12

I bought the Gucci in a different colour a few months ago and I love it. It’s such a useful size. The sales assistant told me it was being discontinued (he wasn’t sure they even had it in stock and that was the massive Gucci store on Sloane Street). But maybe that was the colour - it was the nude/beige version. It does annoy me how much the price has increased recently though. Buying it duty free is a good idea if you can. I wouldn’t touch mulberry any more - they really lost their way with pricing/quality etc and I had really terrible customer service from them previously.

Wilburissomepig · 16/11/2017 22:13

Aren't Mulberrys totally over?

Grin of course not.

OP I have the Gucci and I LOVE it. Go with your heart.

AnonEvent · 16/11/2017 22:19

In 2010 I picked up the YSL Belle du Jour clutch - I walked it to the till, and then at the last moment I considered how often I actually use a clutch (hardly ever), I turned on my heel and put the bag back.

I have regretted that decision at least monthly for the last seven years. #firstworldproblems but it’s true.

You’ve got the money, buy the bag.

ps Mulberry will never die - I’ve recently bought an Amberley and it’s bloody lovely.

Botanicbaby · 16/11/2017 22:23

That you even have to ask and are now coveting other bags tells me this is not the bag for you.

The Fossil is lovely and think of what you can do with the spare cash Wink

I went through similar dilemmas years ago and have not regretted my decision which was to buy a cheaper bag. Though it was a close call.

ephemeralfairy · 16/11/2017 22:34

I think you'll regret it if you don't get the Gucci but get it in red Grin

Tatiannatomasina · 16/11/2017 22:43

I have the gucci and i love it. Lots of people comment and say its lovely, not knowing what i paid for it, its just a nice bag to them. I am so glad i invested in one. I still have the first gucci bag i ever bought. Its battered to bits but at the time i was on cloud 9 being able to walk out of harvey nicks with something i loved. If you can afford it treat yourself. Just beware as it gets much easier to buy more once you have bought your first 😂😂😂

Is true! I allow myself one posh handbag per annum. I am very strict about it.

Clickncollect · 16/11/2017 23:25

Once you've set your heart on something, it is impossible to settle for something else. I've done it myself - coveted a particular bag, bought a cheaper alternative but not been able to stop thinking about the original and then gone and bought it anyway, costing me more in the long run!
It's a lovely bag - life is too short, buy it and enjoy it.

burntup · 16/11/2017 23:30

I love my Gucci
