Very short skirts when pushing 40 - do you...?

Is this a definite no? I think it suits me (only in winter - denim or corduroy with v thick tights and chunky boots). But if I'm nearly 40 am I deluded? I've read that I'm breaking a golden rule of S&B and don't want to be prancing around like a fool...

If you have got good legs, why not? I have never had good legs, but if I did I would not give a stuff about age. As long as you don't go for the Liz McDonald from Corrie look, which would look naff at any age, wear what makes you feel good.

JoJoSM2 · 08/10/2017 12:00

A couple of pics from the Daily Hail. Naomi Campbell is 47 and pulls it off. The other lady not so much.

What a kind thing to do. However I think it's the style of dress, not the length that's the issue in that pic. Her legs look pretty decent to me.

ShuttyTown · 08/10/2017 12:10

Do you think this works for plus size too? (Size 26)

Paintbox · 08/10/2017 12:14

AGree with flo, that lady's legs are fine but the dress doesn't work on her. It's not about the length in that particular case

I'm 51, with pretty good legs
For me it's about the chunkiness of the footwear. A heel, particularly stiletto gives a really different feel. Somehow if I put on a bike boot or similar, the skirt can be short. But a delicate heel, and I look top heavy, and a bit try hard.

Loopytiles · 08/10/2017 12:26

Bodyshaming (the pic of the younger woman) is not OK!

FiveShelties · 08/10/2017 12:27

I don't think it is anything to do with age - it is all about the legs! My legs are and have always been sold, chunky things - best covered up! If they were slim and shapely I would be in a short skirt and dare I say it ---- I am 61.

Loopytiles · 08/10/2017 12:28

That woman and plenty of overweight women have nice shaped legs.

NikiBabe · 08/10/2017 12:28

Nor is body shaming of the older women Confused

Someone posted unkind examples of older women in short skirts well.....some younger women look bad in them too.

FiveShelties · 08/10/2017 12:29

legs are solid not sold Grin

NannyRed · 08/10/2017 12:29

ifYouGoDownToTheWoodsTday why is it "not a nice comment" ? Are you one of those people that gets offended on other people's behalf? A size 26 18yo wearing leggings stretched so tight you can see her breakfast DOES NOT look nice, but if she's happy then why is it up to me to tell her she looks lovely when she looks shit?

There is a huge difference between being honest and saying someone looks crap and being kind and telling someone who looks a mess "you look cute" I'd rather be honest, but I've no doubt you think lying is 'kinder' well it's not. I'm honest rather than kind, I prefer it that way. I see plenty of 20 somethings looking a fright, but as they don't ask my opinion I don't give it. That doesn't mean that thinking "oh my girl, have you no mirror friends? You look a mess" is 'not nice'

Nowhere in life do we sign up to 'be nice at all costs'

Floisme · 08/10/2017 12:29

I'm off. This thread is getting unpleasant and I'm not in the mood for a fight. See you later.

HolgerDanske · 08/10/2017 12:32

I can't strand this trend for putting photos up of people and mocking them or commenting on their looks/etc. It's so rude and horrible.

Ok so it might not be the most flattering dress but you know what, who the FUCK cares?! If she looked in the mirror and felt good then good for her for wearing it.

SupportTheresaElseBoris · 08/10/2017 12:32

I'm 38 and overweight, I will wear what ever the fuck I like.

The body shaming here is horrible, as long as they feel good who cares!

Floisme · 08/10/2017 12:32

But before I do go, there's a world of difference between giving your opinion when the person concerned asks for it and posting random photos.

Lweji · 08/10/2017 12:36

THOSE LEGS ARE FINE TO SHOW!!!

FGS.

And I say this as a size 8.

Just wear a miniskirt if you want to. Even if you are a size 30.

I draw my line at showing buttocks cheeks, except on the beach.

HolgerDanske · 08/10/2017 12:38

And actually I think that supposedly horrid looking young girl looks perfectly put together. Nothing at all wrong with wearing an outfit like that even if you are overweight.

How depressing that people actually think and act this way.

Paintbox · 08/10/2017 12:41

I know that many pics in the internet will have been put there on purpose by the person in the pic but I still don't think it's ok to then use those pics of an example of not looking nice Sad

Needalifeoverhaul · 08/10/2017 12:47

The younger woman in the photo looks lovely...i cant see what your problem is with how she looks. The older woman has lovely legs...just a yukky dress!

EnidButton · 08/10/2017 12:50

Putting up photos of women in order to critique their outfits and bodies is not okay.

Also, using a supermodel as a benchmark is hardly fair.

It was a perfectly fine thread before that. Why can't we stick to saying what we personally prefer for ourselves without ripping into others?

EnidButton · 08/10/2017 12:53

Outfits might be ok, but body shaming definitely is not on.

ValarMorghulisss · 08/10/2017 13:14

I’m 44 and I’ve got kickass legs (even if I do say so myself). In winter I live in denim or cord mini skirts, thick tights and Fly London Mol boots. In summer, I’ll wear denim shorts or skirts, if I plan far enough ahead to fake tan my legs. Can’t see this situation changing for the foreseeable Smile

Auburn2001 · 08/10/2017 13:22

She has good legs.

OP - if you want to wear short skirts, try lots on with different tops, necklines, sleeve lengths, and shoes/boots. No reason why you should not give them up.

I stopped wearing them as I felt like mutton dressed as lamb but now I think I just need to wear them with slouchier tops and ankle boots!
