Very short skirts when pushing 40 - do you...?

Is this a definite no? I think it suits me (only in winter - denim or corduroy with v thick tights and chunky boots). But if I'm nearly 40 am I deluded? I've read that I'm breaking a golden rule of S&B and don't want to be prancing around like a fool...

I'm over 50 and wear short skirts.

Check your mirror not your calendar.

Floisme · 08/10/2017 09:49

I wore them until my legs went which was in my early 50s. And I'll tell you what, when that does happen you kick yourself for not wearing them more while you had the chance.

ZenNudist · 08/10/2017 09:55

Im nearly 39 and yes wear mid thigh dresses with thick tights in winter and bare legged on holiday.

My mum is nearly 70 and still occasionally wears above the knee with thick tights. Shes taller than me. Legs still good. Im less worried about that than when she wears slightly lower cut tops which are unflattering and unfashionable. Shes tasteful/ not tarty!!😵 regardless.

badlydrawncat · 08/10/2017 09:55

I'm 60 and wear short skirts with thick tights and boots or brogues/loafers in Autumn/Winter and knee length or just above without tights in Summer. Bigger all this 'you can't wear' stuff. If I feel good in it, I wear it loud and proud.

Loopytiles · 08/10/2017 10:03

Sounds like you look good, carry on!

NannyRed · 08/10/2017 10:14

Hey girl, I'm 54 , I still wear short skirts. (I'm only 5 foot tall) and love wearing my knitted mini skirt with 40 denier tights and boots.

  1. I have lovely legs.
  2. Shorter skirts suit me better than midi or maxi skirts.
  3. I dress for me, no bugger else.
  4. You can wear anything if you wear it with confidence.

Carry on rocking that loveliest of winter looks. The 'rules' are probably made by some snot nosed kid in her teens or twenties.

HolgerDanske · 08/10/2017 10:16

You can wear anything that makes you feel good, whatever your age or shape!

juneybean · 08/10/2017 10:22

What if I have fat legs... Can I get away with short skirts and thick tights?

runningtogetskinny · 08/10/2017 10:24

I’m 50, when I was younger I wore long skirts as I have chunky calves and tried to hide them. I can now see I looked ridiculous as I’m only 5’3”, short skirts with thick tights are much more flattering and my legs look more balanced out iykwim. Keep wearing them, I really don’t care what anyone else thinks

runningtogetskinny · 08/10/2017 10:25

Yes Juney I’d go for it, swathing your legs in long thick skirts probably makes them look bigger, I did that for years!

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 08/10/2017 10:26

"Age is irrelevant imo. There are plenty of very overweight teens/20s out there who wear things they look dreadful in"

That is not a nice comment.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/10/2017 10:30

I do and really short shorts, I'm 39 and have great legs.

HolgerDanske · 08/10/2017 10:31

Honestly, I really do think that everyone ought to dress as if you are beautiful/the ideal shape/deserve to take enjoyment in the way you dress.

Nobody else sees or cares about your ankles/the size of your thighs/your overall shape.

Even if they did, fuck them! Seriously! You have ONE LIFE. Live it. Wear what you like and stand tall.

Mabelface · 08/10/2017 10:31

Nearly 48 and I love my short skirts. Wear them with patterned or plain tights and doc martens. Wear what you want, dress for yourself and enjoy. Age has nothing to do with it.

kingfishergreen · 08/10/2017 10:31

The key here is thick tights. As a slightly squishy almost 40 year old ai wear short-ish skirts, with thick (70 denier+) tights and either ballet flats or boots. I don't think I could carry off bare legs/translucent tights and heels, not because of my age, but due to aforementioned squishyness.

ZeppelinBend · 08/10/2017 10:35

Another pushing 40 short skirt lover. Why not? I have good legs may as well show them off as my barely there boobs are definitely not an asset Smile Always wear them with tights and a higher neck top.

RoseAndRose · 08/10/2017 10:37

Ageism in fashion seems pretty rife though.

It's wrong, of course. On so many levels.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/10/2017 10:44

I wear them with fishnets sometimes too, I don't care what anyone thinks

ZeppelinBend · 08/10/2017 10:45

That's true Rose, I'm thinking even of my mum who recently went on holiday and bought a swimsuit as in her words she felt she was 'too old' for a bikini. Apparently lasted one day before swopping it for the bikini again as the swimsuit was too hot in the sun.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 08/10/2017 10:46

Which levels?

Pelmet, mini, knee-length, midi, maxi?

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 08/10/2017 11:05

Wearing a mini skirt at any age depends on how good your legs are. Or you might just want to wear one.

PolkaDottyRose · 08/10/2017 11:25

I think we someone else has said the tights are the key..if you are going to wear sheer, barely there or no tights you have to have good legs..with thick tights not so much..They hide a multitude of "sins".

autumngold6 · 08/10/2017 11:37

It's not down to age but how good your legs are. I wear short dresses/skirts with leggings and I'm 58. 40 is young!

MandalaYogaTapestry · 08/10/2017 11:43

I am 38 but don't like short skirts even though my legs are slim and shapely, much more so than in my 20s. But I prefer the knew length now, it makes me look more serious, so to say. But that's just meSmile

MissWilmottsGhost · 08/10/2017 11:50

I'm wearing a short skirt right now and I'm 45. OK I am wearing leggings underneath but they just look like thick tights anyway.
