WTF H&M?!?

How to make a postpartum woman feel even better about her new, less than perfect body. Ordered some jeans online, I'm a 12 but wanted to make sure no muffin top so ordered them in a 12 and 14. They arrived today and I can barely pull the 14s over my thighs and they are about 6 inches from being able to do up. So upset and feeling really shit about myself now. I know my existing size 12 jeans fit so there must be something drastically wrong with their sizing but it's still not great for self confidence. I would have taken a picture but it was too embarrassing!

I like H&M jeans. I have to get an 18 even though I'm a 14. I don't know anyone apart from children who gets their actual size in there! Tops maybe but definitely not trousers, skirts, jeans etc

TheMasterNotMargarita · 25/09/2017 18:32

HandM jeans are nuts. I'm and 8-10 in most places...my HandM ones are a 14.
My knickers from there are a 16. Confused

theaveragewife · 25/09/2017 18:32

Yy size 16 denim shorts for me in H&M and size 10 everywhere else. Don't stress Flowers

user1500124076 · 25/09/2017 18:35

I ordered maternity bras in an XL and I swear you wouldn't fit a gnat's nipple in the cups. If those are XL then I'm gonna need a magnifying glass to see the size small or medium.

I also have 2 size 14 overbump maternity joggers/leggings. One compresses my bump uncomfortably. The other one I'm spending all day pulling up. Pretty much identical in style. Madness.

TheCelestialFox · 25/09/2017 18:36

Their sizes are different from other shops. So a European size 40 is a 12 in most other shops but in h&m it's a 14. Something like that anyway.

Also clothes from the divided range are aimed at teenagers so are particularly small. My DD who is aged 10, 140cm tall and about 5 stone fits in clothes from that range. I once bought a top from the range in a size medium, it was tiny. So I passed it on to DD and it's a little bit baggy, but doesn't look ridiculous on her Shock

AngelsWithSilverWings · 25/09/2017 18:40

Their tops are all over the place size wise too. I'm a 12 in most places but I've bought three shirts/blouses in H&M over the past 6 months, one is a 12 and fits perfectly , one is a 12 and is very baggy and loose and one I had to size down to 10 to get it to look right. I also tried on a size 14 dress recently and could get it done up!

megletthesecond · 25/09/2017 18:41

I swear H&M make jeans small and tops too big.

On a similar theme I have to go down a size in abercrombie bottoms (and I have athletic thighs) but up a size in their tops (and I have no boobs).

MadisonAvenue · 25/09/2017 18:43

I have a size 10 coat from there which I bought last year. Went in yesterday, tried on another coat and the 16 was a bit snug!

I have two of their fine knit cardigans, same style but different colours and both bought at the same time. One is a Small while the other is a Large.

Manpoo · 25/09/2017 18:44

During pregnancy I was a size 8 in H&m vests but I couldn't get a pair of size 16 jeans over my calfs. I'm pear shaped but not that pear shaped!!

AnyFucker · 25/09/2017 18:44

The tops are huge and the bottoms are teeny, IME

Floisme · 25/09/2017 18:44

I don't think they're consistently small, they're just inconsistent. And I very much doubt they're interested in sorting it out because it's how they keep down costs.

Say their suppliers cut out a pile of 100 pieces of fabric together instead of 70. (The numbers are made up but hopefully you get the drift) The fabric pieces on the top will be a different size to the fabric on the bottom but it saves time and therefore makes them more money.

They lose out in some ways - I'd never order from them online because of it. But I think they've done the maths and they don't care.

Haint · 25/09/2017 18:45

I picked up a top in the sale, didn't bother trying it on. It was a sz 20 but I thought it'd look nice loose iyswim (I'm a 14 usually). I can't get my arm down the sleeve. No wonder it was a fiver

Manpoo · 25/09/2017 18:45

(ordinarily I'm a 12/14 in other shops)

Consideringbeingamom · 25/09/2017 18:47

I think they just make everything a size 8 and vary the sleeve/leg lengths and hope for the best. I haven't shopped in there since I tried on five pairs of trousers in the same style going up in size-about 8 years ago-never again!!!Confused

Bobbiepin · 25/09/2017 18:49

If you need a little boost get jeans from Gap, much more generous on the sizing and WAY more comfortable than h&m.

I lost all confidence in h&m sizing when i picked up two pairs of different shorts in a 10 and 12 (the changing room queue was huge and i wasnt sure what size would fit). They both fit me. Two different sizes in the ssme shop!! Of course now i'm pregnant and i'll never be able to fit in them again!

smileygrapefruit · 25/09/2017 18:49

I have been thoroughly cheered up reading all your stories and the ones online! It is utterly bizarre though, they are not just a size too small, more like 4!

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 25/09/2017 18:49

H&M sizing is US sizing so you need to add on a couple of sizes, those 14s were really a 10.

alltouchedout · 25/09/2017 18:50

H&M is bonkers. I'm used to needing 2-3 sizes bigger there but then their maternity clothes seemed true to size and caught me out.
Like their stuff though.

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/09/2017 18:50

...or a 4, they were a 4 OP! :o

smileygrapefruit · 25/09/2017 18:54

No they say uk12/us8 and uk14/us10

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 25/09/2017 18:56

Oh dear, then maybe I have a problem... :o

clausthefish · 25/09/2017 18:57

They are not US sizes. They state UK sizes, and they are still batshit. To the point where I get really cross about it.

I’m a pretty standard size 12 across the board in high st shops. However in H&M I take everything from a small to an extra large in their tops, and I can’t even do up a pair of size 16 skinny jeans. Fucking joke.

EmmaC78 · 25/09/2017 21:10

I don't bother shopping in H and M any more as their sizing is so confusing. I am a 10/12 in most shops and can be anything up at a 16 in H and M.

belleandsnowwhite · 25/09/2017 21:24

I have two dresses from h&m, same dress in different colours in same size. One is to big, other is really tight.

MaisyPops · 25/09/2017 21:27

MaisyI would argue it is kind of the shops fault and they are running more thana little bit small
No because for some of us H&M is one of the few shops that actually fits those of us with smaller builds.

If H&M increased their measurements like loads of other shops to make people feel better then people my size and smaller would struggle to find any clothes thay fit.

Should add I wear a size 8 now and was a size 8 years ago when I was 2 stone lighter. Sizes have been getting bigger.

I get really irritated at how often people go from 'this was small on me. How dare the shop make smaller clothes'.
