WTF H&M?!?

How to make a postpartum woman feel even better about her new, less than perfect body. Ordered some jeans online, I'm a 12 but wanted to make sure no muffin top so ordered them in a 12 and 14. They arrived today and I can barely pull the 14s over my thighs and they are about 6 inches from being able to do up. So upset and feeling really shit about myself now. I know my existing size 12 jeans fit so there must be something drastically wrong with their sizing but it's still not great for self confidence. I would have taken a picture but it was too embarrassing!

Well I was a size 8 in my late teens/early 20s pre kids and am just under 2 stone heavier now and where a 12 except in h&m jeans which I need a 20

I'm usually bang on Size 10 in trousers/ size 8 in tops but had to buy a size 12 pair of trousers from H&M last week and they are too tight/short!! Being a vain idiot I took the tag off as didn't want to think a size 12 was too small Blush

MaisyPops · 25/09/2017 22:06

smiley
Measurements have got bigger in sizes on the whole.
The way round it is that shops fit to their core market. So I know that there's no point me buying trousers in next or asda because they run big and aren't cut for my shape. Same for Fat Face. I wouldn't go online bitching about the company for not understanding that genuinely petite build women exist.
In GAP I'm in the bottom 2 sizes for jeans (and I'm not even that small), but again it suits their market. I'm sure if I went to abercrombie then my thigh would be smaller than their waists.

H&M's main market seems to fit a certain shape/build so that's what they'll run to. No different from any other shop. Just people go to H&M get annoyed by the number in their clothes and then act like the shop is responsible for them feeling rubbish. It's not.

Their black label range seems to be designed for those just entering puberty it seems. I go up 2 sizes in the time taken to walk across store. I don't leave thinking 'fuck you H&M for making me feel fat'. I just don't buy from that line or accept that if I want to buy something from the divided line that it's aimed at teens so I size up.

Floisme · 25/09/2017 22:13

They don't only size small. I wouldn't mind them doing that if they were consistent about it. What they do is size all over the place, presumably because they cannot be arsed with proper quality control and this is I get pissed off with them.

MaisyPops · 25/09/2017 22:18

Floisme
Do you think?
I find them reasonably consistent.

Only thing I hate is when thry do 'oversized' clothes so an XS jumper is actually a medium. If i wanted it 'oversized' then I'd buy up. Don't make everything tent lile because iy looks good on some 6foot moe.

Flyinggeese · 25/09/2017 23:25

OP it's not you it's them. Sizing is bonkers. Labels are to be ignored. They must get so many returns.

Floisme · 26/09/2017 07:29

Maisy that's my experience. Anywhere else I'm an 8-10 but I was also a 10 back when I was a teenager and a stone and a half lighter, so I know the labels are all nonsense and I honestly don't care. I just want consistency so I can shop or order online without having to try 4 sizes. But the last skirt I bought in H&M was 8 and the last jeans were a 16 and I've bought every other size in between.

I haven't noticed this in Cos or Other Stories so I can only conclude that Hennes & Mauritz know how to fix it but choose not to. I further conclude that they let their suppliers get away with it to keep the prices down, which might be fair enough but it makes me wonder what other corners their suppliers are cutting and that concerns me a lot more.

I say this as someone who's been a big H&M fan but my patience is wearing thin.

SukiTheDog · 26/09/2017 07:51

Sizing across the board is scandalous IMO. I’ve got Next jeans I a 12 and Gap in a 16 (and they’re snug). I flatly refuse to buy into the “Im a size...” anymore. I think it’s a conspiracy to make women feel like shite unless they’re model thin. It really fucks me off.

Bought some lacy nighties from M&S in a 14 last week. Shoestring straps, very pretty. I sent them back yesterday.... they’re HUGE on me, even with the straps adjusted. Online shopping’s a fucking nightmare at the moment.

OP, just wear what’s comfy at this time.

SukiTheDog · 26/09/2017 07:52

Oh, forgot to say, I gave up on H&M some time ago. Too much hassle and back and forth with stuff that doesn’t fit!

AlpacasPackOwls · 26/09/2017 07:59

Their trousers are inconsistent. I have a pair of size 16 from there which fit fine. I'm normally a 14 so not far off. However I have ever also tried 14s that are too big and 18s that are too small. They have weird proportions on some of them too.

Tops are better. I can buy most tops in the right size from there.

lurkingfromhome · 26/09/2017 09:01

It's the inconsistency. I have H&M clothes in my wardrobe of every size from 10 to 18 (I'm generally a 12-14). So nothing to do with vanity sizing, just poor standards at the factory and imprecise cutting.

JennyHolzersGhost · 26/09/2017 09:04

Gap is the answer, OP. Much better.

Maudlinmaud · 26/09/2017 09:18

I love h&m but yes the sizing is way off. Like Maisy says sizes have definitely changed over the years. Size 8-10 of the past is a good 12 today. I have size 10 smart trousers from h&m that are too big on me but take a 12 in jeggings from there.
Tops I'm xs in but shirts a 12. I have to return so many things when I buy online. I bought two size 10 skirts recently from the sale, one fit beautifully the other wouldn't go past my thighs. For any success you need to try on. I do like the kids clothes though as they leave lots of room for growing.

ClinkyMonkey · 26/09/2017 09:31

I love H&M high waisted skinny jeans and need a size 16 in them, despite being a 12-14 everywhere else. It has been this which finally taught me not to worry about the numbers on the clothes. I now happily rummage for my size 16 and care not a jot. In all shops, I just lift sizes which look roughly as if they might fit me and try them on. I am, apparently, a small, a medium and a large and also a 12, 14 and 16. And yet my weight remains the same and all my flab is distributed in the same annoying way (mostly around my waist).

Branleuse · 26/09/2017 09:32

Thats H&M for you. You have to try things on, because their sizing is all over the place. I remember even when I was a size 8, I had to buy a certain dress in a 16 in there

lauramcd86 · 26/09/2017 09:43

@smileygrapefruit ah good old H&M! Same happened to me! Couldn't even get them over my feet. Still rocking my (non h&m) maternity jeans (15 weeks on......) Smile it's not just you!

Sandsunsea · 26/09/2017 09:43

I recommend buying the men's jeans from H&M. They are better sized, better denim and better value

NannyR · 26/09/2017 09:49

I agree that the sizing is rather random. I bought a couple of tops there on Saturday, all the same style and size, just different prints. I tried one on and it fit fine, when I got home I tried the other two on, one is too small and the other is bigger.

EveMoneypenny · 26/09/2017 09:58

Bottoms are tiny and bizarrely T-shirts and cardigans often enormous. I'm 36 weeks pregnant, mostly in maternity size 16s, and still comfortably wearing a non maternity size Small T-shirt from the Divided range. Confused

ErrolTheDragon · 26/09/2017 10:18

Maybe its a deliberate ploy to retain footfall in physical shops? I would never buy jeans online, not even from a brand I've always found reliable.

WhooooAmI24601 · 26/09/2017 12:03

H&M sizing is universally acknowledged as being done by drunk elves. I have jumpers from there in size 8 and a denim dress I had to go up to a 16 for (I'm a 10/12 in 'normal' shops including Topshop and Reiss). Madness.

I genuinely don't think 'size' is a thing. Shops do whatever they like. I tend to go by what feels comfortable rather than a set size any more.

StorminaBcup · 26/09/2017 12:07

H&M sizing is totally bonkers. Same here Whoooo I have a size 8 pair of skinny jeans and another pair of summer floaty trousers in a 14. I have never been either an 8 or a 14!

I think it depends on how much material they've got left and how much the machinist has been drinking.

Herja · 26/09/2017 12:07

Yep. I wear size 10 jeans in every other shop (not m and s, toyshop, oasis, primark). Size 14 in h and m.

murphys · 26/09/2017 12:14

H&M have opened here in SA recently, and yes the sizing in bonkers... but for us the opposite way.

I am wearing a cardigan (one of those long ones) from the child's section, age 10. Shock. I am 47 ..... I also managed to get into a pair of age 12 jeans. I just bought dd some summer dresses... well they are just vest tops really, but they come to just above her knee. Crazy shapes and sizes in there. You have to try every single thing on.
