WTF H&M?!?

How to make a postpartum woman feel even better about her new, less than perfect body. Ordered some jeans online, I'm a 12 but wanted to make sure no muffin top so ordered them in a 12 and 14. They arrived today and I can barely pull the 14s over my thighs and they are about 6 inches from being able to do up. So upset and feeling really shit about myself now. I know my existing size 12 jeans fit so there must be something drastically wrong with their sizing but it's still not great for self confidence. I would have taken a picture but it was too embarrassing!

I avoid the trousers because of the sizing. It's just mad and very disheartening when you can't squeeze into a size 16. And their tops are massive, I've got a couple of jumpers and tops from the girls range (and I'm tall size 10).

Go somewhere like Wallis or M&S, they're on the big size and good for an ego boost.

Dd2 is 14, a dancer and tiny and very slim. She's normally a size 6/8. She had to buy a dress she like in a 12 from h and M and it's still tight across her A cup bust.

I took it back and complained. This isn't about 'sizes running small' it's about having a shit quality control and rubbish production dept

I have come to think of H&M as a children's shop.

UsernameInvalid66 · 26/09/2017 15:35

H&M sizing is very strange. I take size 18 in most shops but size 22 in H&M (which most branches don't even stock) in anything that comes in individual sizes, yet if something comes in S M L XL I need the L at most and sometimes even the M. If they seriously think I'm a medium and a size 22 I don't quite understand how their thought processes work.

teta · 26/09/2017 16:00

I've come to accept that anything other than t shirts won't fit me at H&M.But the deep v linen t shirts are brilliant and flattering and I love them ( and I live in a town with a very meagre selection of clothes shops).
I do have to say the beautiful size 16 silk dress I ordered looked amazing on my size 4 - 13 year old Dd .It wouldn't even go over my arms! And the bizarre sizing they have in S,M,L often means the L is for giants in every sense of the word. But there is absolutely no point in hating the shop for evermore. As I have nowhere else to go .

Strokethefurrywall · 26/09/2017 16:06

Yep, H&M are fucking awful which is why I don't shop in there anymore.

I'm 5ft 8" - size 8-10. The last time I went in there, I had to try a pair of jeans on in size 18.

The last time they were any good for sizing was about 10 years ago. I buy the odd t-shirt or jacket in there but never any trousers.

revolution909 · 26/09/2017 16:08

Im in the minority but I do appreciate HMs existence as it's one of the few places where I can find clothes that actually fit. I'm a size XS / 4/6. But in general sizing is nuts. I was looking at some aeropostale jeans last night and their size 0 was too big for me :/

sourpatchkid · 26/09/2017 16:13

Yeah they're insanely small. I don't mind them doing small sizes but just label corrected.

Shame because i would spend loads of money there if they're let me Confused

Lanaorana2 · 26/09/2017 20:59

You can tell something's up because size 20 sells out instantly online, presumably to average bods like me who think well that's bound to fit.

smileygrapefruit · 26/09/2017 22:05

Genuinely grateful for the replies. Definitely going to take the size on the label with a pinch if salt from now on.

I like H & M and have got some good pieces from there but I think the trick is to take an armful of sizes and try on. It's absolutely no good doing online shopping.

What sums up their sizing is a recent conversation I had with the secretary who sits next to me. She is, not to put too fine a point on it, very slim and petite, usually buys a size 8 but can squeeze into a 6 if the cut is right. She came in the other day in some printed slim fit trousers and a simple t-shirt and looked great. I asked her where her trousers were from and she said H & M but then said that she couldn't believe it - they were a Size 16 as they were the only size she could get on!!!!!!!

I'm with Gok Wan; don't look at the size label, just judge by buy as to whether you think it would fit, and then try it on. You can always cut the label out.
