So about £20 in all as it is Canadian dollars

Pestilentialone · 20/07/2017 21:58

OK I am daft, why does a Canadian site do its prices in US dollars?

Some of those Bloom sample sets are v tempting, never mind the monthly subscriptions... Envy

MrsCocoa · 21/07/2017 08:16

OC - first reactions to Civet (only 50 mins in)...tested on skin, this is the love child of Femme and Youth Dew. Sniffed close, the coffee and resins meet the moss giving YD-style complexity and darkness. But at arms length, you get that lighter (suede not leather) buttery fruit of Femme. It's lovely, and very clever, but so far stays very close to these greats (which is possibly going to be the dilemma?) - I will keep on sniffing and see how it develops from here. Update: an hour it's gentler and muskier but not much out and out civet so far...

Want to try it side by side with YD and Femme - but may get a rare chance to nip into Harvey Nics later so need to keep an arm free for further testing! Any must sniffs I should seek out?

FloofyCat · 21/07/2017 10:35

I have been squinting at the thread via half closed eyes - a perfume called Panda sounds amazing but the B word is too terrifying to contemplate, and even type Does anyone remember when Loofah was used as a code word on MN, I think we need one here Grin

Extremely jealous of SH shenanigans, even if you weren't wearing the Compulsory Tasteless Trousers! It sounds amazing. Prada Candy Gloss, you say, calm? Cherry? Almonds?

Kittens Kudos to you for your sample list, this is the kind of dedication to the cause that this thread likes to see! If you like Lush Kerbside, the Perfume Parlour does a Parma Violets one (that's literally what it's called) which is perhaps for the privacy of your own home exactly like wearing the sweets. I love it Blush

OCSockOrphanage · 21/07/2017 10:45

MrsC, Civet sounded so great on paper but I've not liked either Femme or YD on previous trials, although that was an addiction ago, so will have another attempt when in town. I think I'm in Floofy's tent regarding the B perfume... just, why would you? Why would anyone?

Today, with many thanks to ScentSamples for the free 1ml spritz, is Milly La-Foret. The first sniff wasn't encouraging, a bit harshly masculine and cologne-y, but it's vanishing so fast it won't matter by lunch. Then I am feeling minded to resort to Dries van Noten as it's a foul day. And DS's 18th birthday!

Ollivander84 · 21/07/2017 14:30

My samples have arrived and i love them both - damn Grin
Imaginary authors - falling into the sea
CB I hate perfume - at the beach 1966

MrsCocoa · 21/07/2017 16:26

Civet is now very civetty - in that world through rose tinted spectacles warm glowy kind of way. I really like the dry-down and it has staying power. This is FB worthy too.

Not getting the batphobia. And was intrigued to see Bat was created by a genuine bat expert who leads a double-life as a master perfumer. (That sounds so implausible now I come to type it...Smile).

OCSockOrphanage · 21/07/2017 21:56

I thought it was the B**ver that had upset Floofy. Quite like the critters, but less enthused with its US slang /porn connotations!

Started reply hours ago and have been out for birthday dinner, so have lost the thread of my thought.

MrsCocoa · 21/07/2017 23:16

Shock Blush

MrsCocoa · 21/07/2017 23:20

Floofy - hope this is reassuring?

I'm imagining DH's face if I tell him I'm wearing Beaver perfume Grin No, the B phobia is of the horrible evil flapping variety. Beavers are fine

Happy Birthday MiniOC - 18, what a wonderful birthday! Hope your head isn't too sore Wink

I really really want to try the Candy Gloss now, how did I miss this one - cherries and almonds?! Tempted by a sample but worried I will love it and then need a FB. Might compromise with some Di Palomo which is also on my exceedingly long Must Get List.

Olli Tell is more about the Beach 1966. Was it MrsS who made the Benidorm 73?

Hope everyone is having a lovely fragrant weekend.

Ollivander84 · 22/07/2017 12:52

I'm not very good at descriptions but anyway! The beach to me is salt and suncream and sand but in a scented way like sun cream is "perfumed"
Also smells like hot skin Grin and creamy. Some people have said it's similar to bronze goddess but I haven't smelt that

Falling into the sea is a massive blast of citrus that dies down. I can't even describe it after that but it sits beautifully on my skin and I kept sniffing my arm all day. Definitely a full bottle worthy for me but I can't find it cheaper than £90 for 30ml Sad
This is more the beach on a cooler day, where it's fresh and the waves are crashing

OCSockOrphanage · 22/07/2017 14:03

Good that this is an anonymous forum, otherwise I couldn't share with you the information that the evil flappy B*s have colonised our roof and fly out each day at sunset, for fear that we'd be listed as a site of special natural interest and forbidden to do home maintenance!

MiniOC is exploring new worlds: has gone to the pub for his first self-purchased pint! He had a quiet day yesterday, and an early night (which was necessary after the pre-birthday frolicking).

Prada Infusions d'Iris today, a cool restrained scent for a cool day.

Calminaqualm · 22/07/2017 15:06

Floofy, it's certainly worth testing Candy Gloss, but it's very fleeting so I'm not sure it's worth buying a full bottle. A nice lady in Debenhams let me have a tester. Someone on ebay is selling 10 testers for £9.99 - that seems like a good buy.

MrsCocoa · 22/07/2017 20:42

Glad we cleared that up Grin.

Vintage Eden is SotD. Time travel!

Yes, MrsS was responsible for Benidorm 1973 (genius).

Now thinking about the workshop on the 12th through the Zoologist lens...any inspired animal themes?

explodingkittens · 22/07/2017 21:48

Sadly didn't get to the perfume exhibition yesterday after all. Spent the day at Somerset House for a work thing but by the end of the day was feeling so rotten, nauseous and headachey, that I just couldn't face a load of scent! However have plenty of time to go once back from holidays.

Haven't felt like wearing anything until this evening, when I got around to trying one of the samples that arrived on Thursday. Couldn't face anything heavy or complex so it had to be Philosykos, which has so far exceeded expectations. Such a gorgeous lush, wet, green top note which is now drying down into, well, ripe figs and not a lot else so far but that's totally fine by me. I love it. Love it. Annoyed I only got a 1ml sample as I'd like to take it with me on hols next week.

explodingkittens · 22/07/2017 21:58

Oh, meant to say, am so heartened to see the love/respect for Youth Dew on these threads. It was my mum's perfume, and after she died suddenly at the end of last year one of the first things I did was go out and buy myself a bottle of it. I wept on the poor bemused SA in Debenhams, but wearing it was like having a cuddle from mum and it was soooo comforting in those first days and weeks after she died.

I don't wear it so much at the moment although will probably go back to it in the winter months a bit more. It gets such a lot of flak and it's not always easy to wear but I genuinely think it's a beautiful, complex, rewarding scent. Terrible name though Grin

34AQuid · 23/07/2017 12:54

Hello perfume people! I have had intermittent internet access for the last few weeks and I have missed you lot (Benidorm 1973 has had me howling just now) Grin.

Back from my holiday in SE Asia, anyhow. 40 degrees and humid as hell = totally went off some of my usual go-to summer fragrances. Estee Lauder Sensuous Nude made me feel particularly nauseous. I don't think I can ever wear Narciso again Sad. Anything remotely sweet, powdery or supposedly 'tropical' made me feel seriously sick.

In the end the only thing I could bear was a sample I bought with me of Balenciaga Florabotanica. Got it ages ago and thought it was harsh, screechy and a bit disinfectant-ish. But oh, it was superb in that hot and sticky climate. Fresh and green and a touch herby. I drained the sample and have put a full bottle on my wish list.

Didn't buy any perfume on my travels, but I tried all the Guerlains I covet but cant currently afford in Duty Free on the way out and ohhhh, I need some L'Instant Magic and some Mitsouko in my life really badly [cry]. I am so broke right now, though [cry].

Really wanted to try Gabrielle, but they didn't have it in yet at the Chanel counter.

I'm craving Sunshine and Pancakes today, but my sample bottle is officially empty. Payday on the 31st, though Grin

Margaritasbythesea · 23/07/2017 15:10

Hello Perfumeers.

I was wondering if any of you know of a good alternative to Hermes Eau du Rhubarb Eclarteé. It makes me all smiley but spending seventy five pounds to smell like a pudding is something I just can´t stretch to.

I hope you don´t mind me asking.

Mrsmartell08 · 23/07/2017 15:57

Hello all
Busy busy here
Youth dew is fab...as you say awful name though!!
Wore nightmusk on my hols
Have been in ET diamonds and rubies yesterday and today
Weather supposed to turn this week so back to knowing I think...
I'm desperate for some mitsuoko too!!
And Dior addict....

Judydreamsofhorses · 23/07/2017 16:26

I am so behind with this thread. Today is Heeley Cardinal (which suits a grey, cold day - we have the heating on!) and yesterday was NRFH. MrsM, I need more Mitsouko for autumn, I'm down to just a dribble. I'm hoping I can get it with Boots points.

I've ordered some Jo Malone Wood Sage and Seasalt. I recently had the candle and really loved it, so took a punt on some on eBay. I am not generally a fan of JM and find they don't last on me, so we shall see...

Mrsmartell08 · 23/07/2017 16:31

Do report back on the JM Judy!
I will be on town hopefully next week so will be having a sniff 😁

34AQuid · 23/07/2017 16:53

mrsm and Judy - Mitsouko 75ml eau de parfum is £62 on Notino.co.uk right now.

Still can't afford it right now, but thats bloody bargainous!

Mrsmartell08 · 23/07/2017 17:31

I've found some mitsuoko edt on Amazon for £34!
