Alexa Chung has just released her first collection. £330 for a polo shirt!! I just don't get the adulation that she attracts. Yes, she's tall and skinny and generally looks ok in what she wears. But so do a lot of ppl. What am I missing?

BusterGonad

I love your dedication to her Nina2b, she does rock red lipstick. She had got a beautiful face but I wish she was slightly less slim, but I'm not skinny bashing I'm just thinking of her influence on young girls.

Thank you. You're very kind.Smile

I think she normally looks a holy mess, and none of Nina's photos are convincing me otherwise. (See also that other 'fashion icon', Chloe Sevigny.) I am guessing I am not their target market though. Grin

Lordy, those are some odd clothes though, and ridiculous prices. What are those plastic/leather dresses about?!

I think the issue really is we don't have anywhere near a range of sizes and body types. And I think that can be quite damaging.

Even down to faces - the women in Hollywood all seem to have the same face, lips done, cheek fillers ..nothing wrong with having work done but they all look so so similarZ

Yes you are right Birds the thing with plastic surgery is that it's very aging, in the way that each decade or so has a certain way of doing it, like the 80s was all about the super slim nose, and now it's the trout pout, then you have the ever changing breast implants like the big round V Beckham ones from a few years back! It can be so dating and yet facial surgery generally can't really be fixed.
Nina was that the pea coat in navy? It looks lovely!

I think its pretty bad for peopleto be saying shes too thin and needs to eat. Some women are naturally that thin and lean. My sister's one of them and she gets really upset by people (mostly other women actually) insinuating she needs to gain weight and eat more when she eats unlimited amounts with no effect.

Body shaming is wrong no matter who it's about.

I think she looks great. She dresses really nicely a lot of the time, but not always. She is very tall and thin and pretty so would look good in anything. The It book was a bit scrappy and her M&S collection (yeah right) was definitely not for me.

Just looked at the photo of the launch and I don't think I like anything.

Buster, yes it is, I think. Called The Templar coat and based on a child's coat of the 1990s!
Love the jacket!

I think she's beautiful but I can't stand her. Listening to her speak or reading any interviews/pieces gives me the rage.

Goto Can I just say I am not body shaming.
Nina I love a pea coat, they are so cute!

I would guess that she is naturally very slight and slim. If so, why should she be blamed on not being a good influence on young girls.

People like Rebecca Adlington - who was a good role model for young girls - got slated for being fat. Which she wasn't.

She looks like a young Claudia winkleman.

The plastic surgery industry is probably damaging as a whole. But that's another thread. Smile

Those of you who are saying she's a relief cos she doesn't get her tits out better give this months Vogue a steer. Nipples out and proud, the rest of her clad in her new collection.

I'm honestly not sure why promoting her new designs meant promoting her tits too, but I'm not in FASHUN so what do I know.

I read that she has an uber rich 'sugar daddy' type connection going on and he's also well mixed in the press circles so knows how to her name out there. He's also funded her collection.

I've always liked her, but she came on the scene when I was an impressionable and fashion obsessed teenager. I like the fact she doesn't try to look 'sexy' or dress for the male gaze she rarely wears a lot of slap, no fake tan, fake tits, fake eyebrows, fake lips. Most girls when I was younger wanted to go for the Towie/geordie shore/kardasian look and I have never been about that sort of thing. She is also fairly intelligent, practically Mensa levels compared to most ladies that are in the media and has interests beside taking pouting selfies scantily clad.

I remember being disappointed to find out she had a stylist rather than just dressing in her own taste but I like her quirkiness, the juxtapositions of girlish dresses with boots, Peter Pan collars, classic trench coats, lots of classic things with a twist like altered proportions, an unexpected fabric or making a tea dress look tomboyish. I won't be buying from her collection as I think it's overpriced, but if she were to do a high street collaboration with a younger brand I might be interested. Her m&s stuff was ok but nothing really jumped out at me.

@Wingles10 she ran off with an older lover when she was 18, but as far as I am aware no one is funding her collection privately she is dating Alexander skarsgard currently, she is a commodity that sells well, and has brands clambering over each other to collaborate, I doubt sourcing funding through traditional means would have been a problem. She also comes from a privileged background, those who prostitute themselves under the guise of 'sugar daddies' are generally not. I think it's a mean to insinuate she got where she is by sleeping with some rich man.

She does have a big backer - there was something in Vogue about it.

But I very much doubt it's anything other than a business arrangement.
