This is what I don't get, though - I understand designers making a handful of key pieces every season that stars fight to wear on the red carpet because there are only eight of them and they're all in a size 0. I can also understand high street stores making a brilliantly versatile sell-out piece that everyone wants in their wardrobe and can style in their own way. But I don't understand M&S putting their eggs in this incredibly distinctive fashion basket case because who's going to buy this occasion dress, knowing that it's available throughout the country in vast amounts, and the chances of bumping into someone else at the same wedding in the same dress are (technically) high? I wouldn't risk it. That pale pink mohair coat from two (?) years ago, fair enough - you can wear it in different ways, and everyone takes a coat off at some point. You can't even put a jacket over this dress to make it look different. You're committed.

Unless it's just there to grab attention/get people talking on MN, in which case maybe making however many thousand unsold dresses is cheap marketing? or it's the latest step in the Percy Pig brand roll-out which will eventually see M&S become Porks & Sausages? [head explodes]

CrispyBathTowel · 10/05/2017 08:52

Agree, even if the dress wasn't a gopping fire hazard, it would be foolish to buy as it's been so over-marketed and over-displayed in M&S stores that nearly everyone would instantly know where it's from

Vroomster · 10/05/2017 09:21

Imagine if you actually bought that dress and wore it to a wedding/party and someone else was wearing it too!!

Highly unlikely as that would mean two people would have to have bought it!Grin

originalbiglymavis · 10/05/2017 15:39

I go past the big one at Marble Arch at least once a day and have missed the windows (as I usually have my head in a book).

However it did catch my my eye inside the store as it is next the escalator and I caught it out of the corner of my eye a floor down as it was so bright. I said 'woahhh' and got some tourists sniggering when they followed my gaze.

It truly is awful in real life. If I saw it in a charity shop I'd think it was a retro 1970s dress.

Maybe it's just one of those things that looks truly stunning on. Or not. I can't imagine who would suit the colour for starters.

Akire · 11/05/2017 12:16

Full page advert in Metro today. Someone must be buying it... or head office are screaming to advertising department Ethel we have 300,000 of these buggers to get rid off will you DO something!

Sniggering at "your very flattering sleeve" interstate all adverts show it much more as baby pink not real life shock it is.

YouWouldntLetItLie · 11/05/2017 12:22

also, have you noticed that the most eye-catching print ads all seem to show the dress in motion? A-flappin' and a-flouncin' in the breeze, in the middle of some lively event. Whereas most of us would be wearing the dress while standing around waiting for the speeches/a 38 bus/death to come and take us, while looking like the world's most awkward strawberry milkshake.

ElspethFlashman · 11/05/2017 14:25

I saw it in real life on a mannequin today. With about eleventy billion hanging on a rail alongside.

Even on the size 6 mannequin it looks horrid. I was desperate to try it on to show you but had a child with me and couldn't face the changing rooms (or the imagined sniggers from the staff).

I had a feel though. People actually turned and looked at me! They thought I was admiring it! Blush The fabric is so horrible if made my fingers sweat on contact.

mammmamia · 11/05/2017 18:48

Brilliant posts from youwouldnt!

originalbiglymavis · 11/05/2017 18:49

I wonder if they are selling any at all? Would they tell us do you think?

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway · 12/05/2017 17:53

I'm in marksies now and I'm gripped by a desperate urge to burst into a rousing rendition of 'Let's do the Time Warp Agaaaiiinnnn'
And not in a good way.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/05/2017 18:03

I've seen it today in the almost actually the colour of flesh. I need a lie down

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway · 12/05/2017 18:13

If my flesh was anything like that colour I'd be off down the doctors sharpish.
It's much much worse irl

ohgoshIdontknow · 12/05/2017 18:20

So glad I've found this thread as I've been gazing at this dress in horror on my way to work past M&S every morning.

Ginger you deserve a medal. Hilarious.

M&S seems to have lost the plot recently which is sad. I hope they sort themselves out.

weebarra · 12/05/2017 18:49

Ginger - you and I are the same size and build. Bravo for trying that monstrosity on. You did look a bit like a pink hued nun.

originalbiglymavis · 12/05/2017 19:32

I'm wondering if it would look better in orange. Maybe not. I think it might be growing on me I saw a lot worse in there today (I didn't go in there specially to see it, honest!)

ErrolTheDragon · 14/05/2017 19:16

The talk round-up had an advert for the flipping thing in it.

ThreeForAPound · 14/05/2017 19:30

I love this thread SO much Grin.

I am BEGGING one of you to try this one and take a pic. Just so, y'know, I can get an idea of how it hangs before I part with my hard earned cash...

I'm sure my Nan had some curtains like that in the 70's Three.

aheffalump · 14/05/2017 20:38

My eyes!!! 😱😱

ErrolTheDragon · 14/05/2017 22:36
Countrygirl38 · 14/05/2017 22:38

I agree OP. I saw it the other day at the front of the store on a manekin. It was truly dreadful!!

Laiste · 15/05/2017 08:12

When i read those high brow reviews in the like of Vogue ect, gushing over blatantly ugly bits of clothing i remember those old Harry Enfield 'I Saw You Coming' sketches. Bloody spot on Grin

polyhymnia · 15/05/2017 08:49

Full page ad of it in The Times today too.

BitOutOfPractice · 15/05/2017 12:12

Look at this polyester delight in Next this morning. I wonder if it'll be in the sale. Confused
