Mascara on lower lashes

Do you think mascara on the lower lashes is aging?
I'm 45 and luckily still have quite thick and long lashes that I apply mascara to both upper and lower lashes but under my eyes the skin is starting to get wrinkly.
I was reading that mascara on the lower lashes can be quite aging.
What do you think?

OP posts:

DrScholl clock work orange 😂
I think it looks weird without, like you can't be arsed to a proper job, I love it on the bottom as I want big fat 60s lashes. I don't care if it highlights my wrinkles, I just whack on my Skinflash concealer and I'm as happy as a pig in muck.

mowglik · 14/01/2017 19:56

I've never used mascara on the lower lashes, tried it a few times and it just looks wrong

Agree it's a fresher look without mascara on the bottom lashes. Also MUAs have never put mascara on my bottom lashes maybe it's an old fashioned thing?

Botanicbaby · 14/01/2017 20:54

No way is mascara applied to lower lashes ageing. I think it looks odd without and I don't like the photos above either. Anyway OP if you want to wear it & feel happy with how it looks go ahead!

I've never understood this oh now that I'm 40/50/60 etc mentality that you suddenly can't do something. Don't we naturally gravitate towards styles, products as we age anyway.

CaraAspen · 14/01/2017 21:00

OP:
It's not about it being ageing as such but apparently, according to make up experts, using it only on the top lashes opens up the eyes.

CaraAspen · 14/01/2017 21:04

I think it you use a smudge of shadow in a natural colour like a deep moss, to the halfway point under each eye, the effect is much prettier and softer. Not having anything under the eye looks weird, however.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 14/01/2017 21:08

I never wear mascara. I don't need it.
I don't look piggy eyed.

There's nothing obligatory in make up. It's up to you to decide what you want to use.

I always put some mascara on my lower lashes. I don't slather it on but it does make my eyes look bigger, and more balanced as someone said upthread.

Esssa · 14/01/2017 21:45

I only do the outside 1/3 - 1/2 and only with a light dab not a proper coating like my top lashes get. I find it opens my eyes up. I do use a highlighter in the inner corners as well though.

walkingthedogs · 14/01/2017 21:50

I have always worn mascara on my bottom lashes without even a thought that it maybe ageing. After reading your OP I googled it and all the blog's agreed that you should never put mascara on your bottom lashes after the age of 40. I wiped mine off immediately in the hope I would look younger but it just looked weird so put it on one eye only and had a catch up with a few friends.
Conclusion is that at 45 with green eyes and individual lash extensions on the top, mascara on my bottom lashes definitely makes my eyes look bigger and the colour pops more Smile sod what the blog's say and ask your friends for an honest opinion

mistermagpie · 14/01/2017 21:52

I think it looks weird to have mascara on upper lashes and not on lower ones, I also think it looks weird to have liner under your eyes and no mascara. I need liner under my eyes so by default I need mascara too.

I don't like either of the pictures above and personally, no bottom mascara makes my crows feet more obvious.

DramaAlpaca · 14/01/2017 21:53

I'm 52 & don't put mascara on my lower lashes. It might look OK on some people but it doesn't look right on me.

FreshStartIn2017 · 14/01/2017 22:14

I put mascara on the lower lashes but much less than the upper lashes. I never go for the flight look though, so am naturally a bit of a minimalist all the way round.

I think rd look odd without even a hint of mascara tbh. For years I used to tint my lashes and they always did lower rather than leave them.

FreshStartIn2017 · 14/01/2017 22:15

Flight look was meant to be clogged look. Not quite sure how that little mistake happened!

mistermagpie · 14/01/2017 22:44

I think the bottom picture here looks more defined without being obvious.

I definitely need mascara on my lower lashes to disguise the bags. Without it my eyes look puffy and weird but I have very pale eyelashes.

When I had my make up done at Bobbi Brown though recently they only did the top.

squoosh · 14/01/2017 23:12

Good photo example mistermagpie. The bottom pic looks so much better.

notMarlene · 14/01/2017 23:13

I agree mistermagpie.

I've never got on with much in the way liner under the eye and stopped wearing mascara on my lower lashes years ago but they were darker then, I think. I'll try a wee drop and see how it is. Mmm.

BadToTheBone · 14/01/2017 23:23

I'm 49 and I dye my lashes both top and bottom, I then only wear mascara on the top, the bottoms one look darker but no clumping or running. I was a swimmer in my day so I've always dyed them, takes 5 minutes every few weeks. I've recently taken to doing my eyebrows too and I've had so many compliments from young and old.

I wear minimal make up anyway, so this is easiest for me.

SantaClausMortificado · 15/01/2017 00:13

BadtotheBone

Do you do it yourself or go to a salon?

If you do it yourself - what dye/kit do you use (for both eyelashes and eyebrows) and do you have any tips?

DowhatIwanttodo · 15/01/2017 07:42

I have dyed my own lashes and had them dyed in a salon and it was pointless as my eyelashes must be really fine as it didn't make any difference. Complete waste of money for me.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 15/01/2017 08:01

I'm with the 'hint of mascara on lower lashes' crowd.

I think you go with what suits you. I am happier with a light coat on lower lashes, others prefer the naked look.
As far as eyebrows are concerned, I used to have a pair that were a dead ringer for Dennis Healey, but years of plucking were not doing me any good. I saw a mua on one of the shopping channels who said she never plucks her clients' eyebrows - she trims them. She demonstrated the method and I've been doing that for about 8 years or so. I have a good natural line and trimming doesn't run the risk of overplucking. I also dye them every few weeks as the occasional grey hair appears.

BadToTheBone · 15/01/2017 12:40

Santa I do it myself, I get the kit from Amazon. It's Strictly Professional, I get the Black but there's a blue black that I daren't use although would if I was younger. I use the paint brush supplied for my eyebrows but I have some disposable mascara brushes (few pence from eBay) for my eye lashes as I've nearly blinded myself with the paintbrush before, lol.
