How to avoid looking cheap in the summer.

What would be your main tips on how to look good during the summer?
Any particular colors, fabrics, styles (or brands) to avoid?
The How to Look Expensive threads were really interesting, but I find it's easier to look more together in the winter, but more of a problem in the summer.
I always end up looking like a bag of shit
Sometimes I 'get it right' but when I do, it's purely accidental Confused

bonmarche?

randomer · 01/06/2016 19:41

ah the droop is wrong?

DailyFailAteMyFish · 01/06/2016 19:43

I have the Boden ruched dress with the scoop neck. It is a good time.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2016 19:45

I like daft prints, but not insipid colours.

Madbengalmum · 01/06/2016 19:45

Never thought, joe browns, seasalt and boden could be mentioned in a summer style thread??!!!😄

candykane25 · 01/06/2016 19:48

Randomer step away from bonmarche.

I buy plain Boden stuff, no patterns because it fits well and is good quality. All to basics, chinos, jeans, t shirts, the ponte plain dresses. The materials are thick and don't look cheap. Same with joules, gap and lands end. The high st is so cheap.
I don't pay full price.i wait until they are reduced.

randomer · 01/06/2016 19:49

enlighten me...where should i look?

everythingsgoingsouth · 01/06/2016 19:54

DailyFailAteMyFish - ah, thanks!

Dozer · 01/06/2016 19:55

It's v hard for those of us with big boobs to do the "no bra straps showing" thing, since strapless / "multiway" (to norkage hell) bras won't do, and so few summer clothes are sold with straps that cover bras. Angry

Similarly hard to pull off a conservative, "expensive", plain colours look with slim trousers and so on for those of us who aren't slim.

Angst!

prettywhiteguitar · 01/06/2016 19:56

I just purchased a pair of linen mix shorts from primark, classic cut, lovely styling £6.....£6 !!!! I

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2016 19:56

Everything - I like the first one.

allegretto · 01/06/2016 20:03

Capri pants look bad on almost everyone. Avoid tshirts and flip flops.

Twinkie1 · 01/06/2016 20:05

Wear nude under white (well under any colour other than black), white g string under white clothes just looks a bit Brittany!

Use sun cream on your face and décolletage every day, you'll avoid looking like a lizard with a crepey chest.

JackandDiane · 01/06/2016 20:06

WHAT DO YOU MEAn by capri pants?

knee length?
i have fantastic legs. they look amazing on me

allegretto · 01/06/2016 20:13

Then you are the exception that proves the rule!

prettywhiteguitar · 01/06/2016 20:21

I have skinny legs and Capri pant suit me too Grin

prettywhiteguitar · 01/06/2016 20:21

Pants !!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2016 20:23

I also have skinny legs, but capri pants look dreadful on me - I look like I belong in Asda with a zillion kids called Jayden and Chardonnay etc.

JackandDiane · 01/06/2016 20:25

i think i mean 7/8 trousers not 80s capri.
they need the good fit of a trouser though

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2016 20:27

7/8s v good - love em.

3dogsandacat · 01/06/2016 20:36

bonmarche?

You're joking, right? Shock

Aaaarrrghhh I can't cope with cropped flares or Girlfriend
7/8 look Half- Mast
Those bootcuts that are so long they touch the floor just look dangerous

Huge "No" to the strapless maxi dresses with elastic ruching holding up the bodice, usually worn by women with large bustlines and no bras.
If they trip on the hem, the whole thing will hoik down and they'll be flashing in the middle of the local Aldi.

Armpits should only be exposed if they are clean and smooth

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/06/2016 20:51

My DMother wears BonMarche and always looks well turned out (but she is 79yo so she's allowed)

MrsCampbellBlack · 01/06/2016 20:58

I really wouldn't spend too long worrying about it - I mean how many weeks of proper summer do we get?

Bemused by the not wearing clothes to show off a tan like white - white is pretty much my favourite colour. White skinnies, tan sandals and a chambray shirt or silk cami is my default spring/summer outfit.
