How to avoid looking cheap in the summer.

What would be your main tips on how to look good during the summer?
Any particular colors, fabrics, styles (or brands) to avoid?
The How to Look Expensive threads were really interesting, but I find it's easier to look more together in the winter, but more of a problem in the summer.
I always end up looking like a bag of shit
Sometimes I 'get it right' but when I do, it's purely accidental Confused

is this acceptable....legging (grey) ,flats, a manky looking dress type thing from White Stuff in a sort of maroon colour and top with long grey cardigan if needed?
No?

randomer · 01/06/2016 14:16

oh legging with an s

MNetter15 · 01/06/2016 14:26

What's wrong with vest tops? Shock

LillianGish · 01/06/2016 14:38

Armpits - however well-groomed - do not look 'expensive'.

JackandDiane · 01/06/2016 14:58

flab bra and flaccid on the whole
I speak as one who avoids unless temp over 25

EnidButton · 01/06/2016 15:04

"Armpits do not look expensive"

Grin I love that.

LillianGish · 01/06/2016 15:15
Grin
MNetter15 · 01/06/2016 15:40

But unless you're walking around with your hands in the air, nobody can see your arm pits Confused

LillianGish · 01/06/2016 15:58

Unless you are asking around with your arms glued to your side no one can avoid getting a glimpse (or even worse - and bear in mind I live in France - a whiff) of your armpits.

DameXanaduBramble · 01/06/2016 16:02

Op my stripe top is from Zara and a bajillion years old, I wish they still made it, it was cheap and perfect.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 01/06/2016 16:16

But some of us look shit in navy, khaki and mocha. I look ill if I wear these colours. Those colours with warm based nail polish lke coral don't suit anyone with cool colouring.

I wear a lot of white, indigo, grey and denim blue. Silver flip flops or accessories and a bluey pink nail varnish does it for me

EnidButton · 01/06/2016 16:37

Funny though. I bet I think of it every time I get dressed on a hot day. Grin

Emoji I wear the same colours. Warm colours look awful on me, khaki kind of matches my eyes so I bought a couple of things in it only to realise I looked like I'd been dug up. Same with black, not near my face. I do like navy though.

PestilentialCat · 01/06/2016 16:53

Agree Enid & Emoji - I look awful in khaki - in anything browny, creamy, beigey or orangey really. Or yellowy.

Blue & grey for me, some white, some red, some turquoise. Silver not gold.

Diggingmywayout · 01/06/2016 17:31

TheEmoji, Enid, & Pestilential, I'm with you lot. Warm colours look horrendous on me.

randomer · 01/06/2016 17:38

ok people...so I am a 50 something short fattish person. I have some spectacular mistakes in my wardrobe and I am having a giant clear out tomorrow.
I like Monsoon...what to do...should I go classic or more Joe Brown?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2016 18:13

Hmmm not in favour of Joe Brown stuff, generally, tbh. Sorry.

TeenyfTroon · 01/06/2016 18:24

I have a lovely Joe Brown top. It looks gorgeous....

... on the hanger.

On me .... ghastly. I'm 5'3". I think I need to be 5'7" at least. And skinny.
Never again.

randomer · 01/06/2016 18:41

mmm get you ..its for a tall slim hippy person.....so go classic?

SexNamesRFab · 01/06/2016 19:10

I started running a few weeks ago so that I'd be nice and toned under my summer clothes. It's working but I've broken both my big toenails down in half (ouch) and have a mysterious big purple bruise on my knee. Neither of these are helping my summer look Sad

everythingsgoingsouth · 01/06/2016 19:14

not my thing ,but thought I'd pass on that Seasalt have 35% off 35items until 6th June.

P1nkP0ppy · 01/06/2016 19:19

Why do Joe Brown dresses remind me of Riverdance?
I too like them but I don't think they're made for those of us with boobs....

randomer · 01/06/2016 19:20

so....Alexon?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2016 19:21

Seasalt stuff is so bloody depressing.

everythingsgoingsouth · 01/06/2016 19:34

like i say remus, not my thing, but it's popular with others. I'm not usually overkeen on Boden either, but... I am fancying the ruched dress (mainly as it's double layered so might be a bit supportive?)

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 01/06/2016 19:35

I think any over decorated droopy stuff looks cheap and tatty. Particularly Joe Browns. I don't get their stuff at all. I don't want to walk round looking like an over decorated felt handbag. Man made fibres too. Yuk

I fid Seasalt droopy tooGrin. Simplicity is the key. No cute prints or droopy tunics
