Help - Wedding outfit recommendations needed !

scatterbrain · 01/12/2006 14:09

OK - need your help ladies !

Wedding is on 23rd Dec - in a cold and hilly place !

Me is size 16/18 - not massive chest but broad back, wobbly tummy, and generally rather soft and rounded !
Hair is dark blonde with highlights in a short bob !

Would like something smart and stylish that makes me look slimmer than I am. Although at 39 am wary of looking like mutton !

Hat not strictly necessary - although I do like hats - few others have got fascinators, but I'm not sure about those !

Ideally something that I could wear again ?

Help please !

I wonder if MrsBadger knows about hats. I know she's not around this evening, as she is performing in a concert, but maybe she'll pop back tomorrow.

JackieNoHoHo · 02/12/2006 21:08

More hats here . This one is very glamorous, but maybe a bit OTT!

scatterbrain · 02/12/2006 21:10

Thank you !!

You know I think I am going off the cossack thing ! Don't think it will suit hair ! Maybe a fascinator or some other groovy little titfer will be more me ?

I think the dress will be slightly longer than the teal coat - I am a bit of a scruff so my initual thought is "so ?" - but would that really spoil the look ??

Goodness - Mrs Badger is OUT !! On a Sat night - now she must have a life !!! Lucky devil !!

I am home alone - apart from dd that is !

OP posts:
JackieNoHoHo · 02/12/2006 21:14

I suspect it would look less elegant if the dress was a bit longer than the coat. So maybe a jacket's a better bet, then it doesn't matter (colder, though). Lots of good fascinator things around, I think.

Which colour is the velvet dress from Kew? There were 2 options, I think.

scatterbrain · 02/12/2006 21:17

It's black !!

Maybe I could get that teal velvet jacket from Monsoon to go with it ? and some sort of teal/black combo hattie/fascinator job ?

Will need smart new black shoes too of course ! I assume black opaque tights would be OK ?

Could always wear thermal vest to church and remove at hotel reception - we are staying there so won't be doing a striptease

Thanks for listening !!!

OP posts:
JackieNoHoHo · 02/12/2006 21:21

Agree - the teal jacket from Monsoon would be good. You might also get away with wearing black boots for the church, and changing into shoes once back at the hotel. I think velvet's substantial enough that it will go with boots, iykwim.

JackieNoHoHo · 02/12/2006 21:24

Teal and black fascinator . I have no idea what a 'cocktail piece ' is, but it looks nice.

scatterbrain · 02/12/2006 21:29

Oh Jackie you are a gem ! That fascinator is fab !!

I am still tempted to order that long teal coat and see how it looks with the dress !

Oh - decisions decisions !!!

Thank you !

OP posts:
JackieNoHoHo · 02/12/2006 21:33

Why not order it and see what it's like? You can always send it back...

KezzaG · 02/12/2006 21:56

I turn my back for half an hour and the outfit is sorted!!!

I would order the teal coat as well. No one is going to look at it on the day and say, doesnt Scatterbrain look nice, if only her coat was 2 inches longer. Unless Trinny and Susannah are guests of course

you are going to look lovey, Jackie I will be posting on here for your help for my next night out.

scatterbrain · 02/12/2006 22:05

Bolleaux as Enid would say !!!

Just tried to order the teal coat - and it won't arrive until 29th Dec - so that's no good ! (wedding is 23rd)

Poo Poo Poo !!!

Wonder if they sell them in shops anywhere !!!

Bugger !

GUS

Great Universal and Marshall Ward stock Nicholas Millington. If the link works it should go to the right place. Its a bit more expensive but needs must and all that!

scatterbrain · 02/12/2006 22:37

Ooh Ta Kezza !! Will try those in a mo !

have just ordered the Monsoon jacket - and wondered what you guys thought of this fascinator maybe ?

I thought it was quite subtle in fascinator terms as it just plops on your head - rather than sticking out at rakish angle !

OP posts:
KezzaG · 02/12/2006 22:42

I like the fascinator. I have a bob too and most of the ones I have tried just stick out too much. I think you need big hair to wear the more exotic looking ones, but this one is nice and it is quite wintery.

scatterbrain · 02/12/2006 22:43

Yay - have ordered the longer coat from GUS - thank you for that link Kezza !!

So - assuming one of the jacket or coat fits and looks OK - I just needs shoes or boots and something for me head !

OP posts:
scatterbrain · 02/12/2006 22:45

Oh so glad you like it - and it's so cheap !

Think I will bid now ! I'd get a hat but it's only a tiny wedding - 20 people - and I've spoken to about 6 of the 10 ladies and they are all doing fascinators or nothing ! Don't want to look OTT - but really not sure about fascinators as a whole !

I think they suit "up hair" or big hair - but not really sleek bobs !

Thanks so much for your advice !

OP posts:
JackieNoHoHo · 02/12/2006 23:04

Well done KezzaG for finding the coat elsewhere - soo frustrating to have set your heart on something and for it not quite to work. Fascinator looks good, too.

I love it when a plan comes together.

scatterbrain · 08/12/2006 12:53

Girls are you there ???

Coat has come and it looks terrible on me - dress is about 4 inches longer than it and it is so flarey - I feel I do look like a chaise longue !!!

Have a photo - when you're around let me know and I will try and post it !!

OP posts:
JackieNoHoHo · 08/12/2006 12:56

Oh no. So it's on to plan b or c - either try the jacket from Monsoon (either with matching skirt or over your existing dress), or find another coat/jacket.

scatterbrain · 08/12/2006 12:57

Hooray - ypou're here !!!

Jacket from Monsson was tiny - got a 16 and it was miniscule - so that's also no good ! D'you want to see my photo - I look crap ??

OP posts:
JackieNoHoHo · 08/12/2006 13:02

If you'd like to post it do, but if you're not happy with it (and it doesn't sound like a sort of 'am I or aren't I looking OK' type situation - you very definitely don't like it) - possibly no point. Could you try a size up in the Monsoon jacket? Did you like it enough on to try that? I'm currently looking at the Kaleidoscope website, which I've always assumed was nasty stuff, but actually they have a huge range of coats and jackets. Will try linking to some in a mo.

JackieNoHoHo · 08/12/2006 13:17

Some possibilities:

Pink coat
Plum velvet jacket (possibly not warm enough?)
Military style coat ? Not sure it's necessarily the right style for you, and is grey, so not a very wedding-y colour. Lovely and warm though.
Another velvet jacket - not quite teal, but a bit lighter?

Any of those appeal?

scatterbrain · 08/12/2006 13:22

Ta - have posted my grotesqueness in Members Profiles for you !!!

Will have alook at these now - Thanks you a star !

OP posts:
JackieNoHoHo · 08/12/2006 13:24

And one more but it's black (even has a hat, don't think it comes with the coat though). Am sure you're not grotesque, though. Will go and have a look.

scatterbrain · 08/12/2006 13:30

I love that black coat and hat - have resigned myself to having to actually GO shopping !! Will try Sunday as dh can have dd then !!

Think a coat is my preference now - and wear the Kew dress underneath as it is lovely and has only been worn once !

I'd get that Red Kew coat - but red doesn't look good on my - my face is pink enough anyway ! Would be fab if I could find a teal version !

God - I am so fed up !
