Help - Wedding outfit recommendations needed !

scatterbrain · 01/12/2006 14:09

OK - need your help ladies !

Wedding is on 23rd Dec - in a cold and hilly place !

Me is size 16/18 - not massive chest but broad back, wobbly tummy, and generally rather soft and rounded !
Hair is dark blonde with highlights in a short bob !

Would like something smart and stylish that makes me look slimmer than I am. Although at 39 am wary of looking like mutton !

Hat not strictly necessary - although I do like hats - few others have got fascinators, but I'm not sure about those !

Ideally something that I could wear again ?

Help please !

Have you got a Matalan near you? Scroll down to the crushed velvet dress with taffeta hem - bit of a bargain!

jacket

this is my first attempt at a link so fingers crossed.

Think a jacket like this is lovely and you could wear it again with jeans or black trousers.

scatterbrain · 01/12/2006 21:31

I am really realy liking the velvet stuff - seems lovely and cosy and Christmassy and special all at once !

So the question is - do fitted jckets and long skirts suit the larger lady or will I look like a badly stuffed chaise longue ?

OP posts:
KezzaG · 01/12/2006 21:37

flock skirt

Lol at stuffed chaise longue. I dont think size 16 is that big, and definately not too big for a velvet fitted jacket.

I couldnt find the skirt I saw in Kaliko but this flocked one from Evans is the same kind of idea. This with matching colour velevet jacket and high heels. Lovely. And all wearable again on their own.

JackieNoHoHo · 01/12/2006 22:03

This jacket is rather lovely, and good colours too - but I'm not sure whether it's a good idea to wear a velvet dress with a velvet jacket over it - might be a bit too much. But with a velvet/devore type skirt, it could be lovely.

JackieNoHoHo · 01/12/2006 22:05

Is this the skirt you were trying to link to, KezzaG? Looks lovely.

scatterbrain · 01/12/2006 22:40

Thanks for all the ideas !

Am not usually indecisive - but I just feel like such a blimp at the moment ! DH thinks dress or skirt looks better on me than smart trousers - and I think I would feel more dressed up in skirt/dress !

Am slightly tempted to buy stunning coat - like the red military one in kew - and a fairly ordinary dress - wrapover or something - to wear undersneath. Presumably photos will be outside - so I could look very smart in coat and boots - I'm thinking fur russian hat too - very cossackish - then just normaly smart/cas for reception !

Am loving that teal velvet in Monsoon though !

JackieNoHoHo · 01/12/2006 22:52

Ooh look - only available in black but lovely!

JackieNoHoHo · 01/12/2006 22:54

Bit brighter but I'm not 100% sure about the fur bits.

JackieNoHoHo · 01/12/2006 22:55

No stop THIS IS IT ! In teal!

KezzaG · 01/12/2006 23:07

I want that teal coat myself, it is lovely. Will go with a Russian style hat beatifully.

good find.

JackieNoHoHo · 01/12/2006 23:08

I'm ridiculously pleased with myself for finding it. You'd better like it, scatterbrain (or at least pretend to).

MrsBadger · 02/12/2006 10:36

ooh, lovely!

(off to recommend it to Enid on the Party Item for £75 thread)

scatterbrain · 02/12/2006 18:22

Oooooh - Hello !!! Sorry have been out all day - not clothes shopping though sadly ! School fair and then Tree and Decs shopping !

Well - that teal coat is stunning Jackie ! I like it .....a lot.....BUT ....... it looks like it is made to go with trousers ! So now I'm thinking - smart trousers, probably have to be black (?) with some sort of smart but comfy top - why is sparkly knit-wear, or sequinned knit-wear coming to mind ????

I remmebered last night that I bought a fab velvet dress from Kew last month and have only worn it once - I am wondering if I could put that coat over the dress ??? Will do link in two secs !

Let me know what you think !

kew dress

OP posts:
KezzaG · 02/12/2006 19:59

That dress is lovely, how could you forget you had it! Lol

I think it would look good with the teal jacket but you would need to try it as I think they would need to be a similar lenght so they looked like a set, rather than random coat thrown over dress ifyswim.

I am jealous, I want to get new clothes for a wedding!

JackieNoHoHo · 02/12/2006 20:30

That is lovely, scatterbrain. Definitely would need to check it's the right length not to peep out from under the coat. What sort of hat did you have in mind? Something like this ? or there's also this . I'm, frankly, pretty clueless about hats, and I think it's difficult to generalise about them - you really have to try them on. Do you have a small-ish hat shop that you could visit, and get advice, and try hats on, to get an idea of what suits you?

KezzaG · 02/12/2006 20:35

Second hat, definately.

Jackie, ever think we are enjoying this a bit too much!

WonderCod · 02/12/2006 20:36

kezza

are oy my mate?

JackieNoHoHo · 02/12/2006 20:37

Vicarious shopping is the best imo - you're not spending your own money, and, in my case, you're dressing a much smaller dress size than your own (or is that ?), which gives much more scope for finding lovely stuff.

KezzaG · 02/12/2006 20:40

Oooh I dont know am I?

Do you mean RL mate or MN mate? Actually I think the answer to both is no

scatterbrain · 02/12/2006 20:47

Oy Cod - if you're going to come on my thread at least you could say something helpful about my dress dilemme !

OP posts:
scatterbrain · 02/12/2006 20:48

Not sure on the hat front tbh ! Not sure that either of those would suit the bob !
