Do you think nail varnish colour says something about you?

I am very conscious when wearing colour on my nails. I either go pale pink or very dark but am conscious when I wear red.

Is it just me?

Just about to paint mine fire engine red! Don't give a stuff what people think. I think that keeping your nails short and tidy helps.

TheMotherOfHellbeasts · 12/09/2015 21:41

I wear different colours depending on my mood. I do have a bottle of Essie's Thigh High which is my 'special occasion' red, that or Chanel's Rouge Noir.
I tend to wear dark grey most of the time, I am currently going through a phase of adoring subtle glitter for everyday wear too. In short, I just wear whatever takes my fancy at the time. Smile

TheMotherOfHellbeasts · 12/09/2015 21:44

I meant to add, our foreman calls my Essie Thigh High "whore house red". What a charmer. That aside, we live in South America and where we are, red nails are seen as being glam if you're married and "up for it" if you're not. Hmm

pictish · 12/09/2015 21:50

I like subtle glitter (very subtle) a pale rosy wash or just clear varnish. I have bought and tried a few 'colours' but I just can't get over feeling that it makes my hands look like I'm a bit rough. I don't mind it on other people but don't like it on me.
I'm no shrinking violet either...I love bold colours and whatnot - just not on my hands.

Love red allways wear it this one is a bit Crimbo but still I wanted a little sparkle

i always wear blood red, it just suits me. really hate fake nails and french manicures though

Blarblarblar · 12/09/2015 21:53

Oooo I'm not giving you guys the finger btw Blush

squoosh · 12/09/2015 21:56

Nails and nail art are so much bigger than they've ever been. As long as nails are shortish like Blar's I think they look great.

Long nails of any colour make me slightly queasy and french manicures are nafforama but other than that I don't make any judgements about nail colour.

Vajazzler · 12/09/2015 22:02

I hope not because I dread to think what mine would say! Currently sporting a mermaid theme mani.

I see red as classic, never tarty !

pictish · 12/09/2015 22:22

Red makes me feel like Pat Butcher.

mathanxiety · 12/09/2015 22:26

I tend to reserve the wackier colours for my toenails. I hardly ever use polish on my fingernails but it's always pale pink when I do.

polyhymnia · 12/09/2015 22:30

I really don't like any sort of red - would never wear it myself . Like to stick to naturals, greys and a bit of blue occasionally. Also don't like any hint of glitter. But each to their own.

pictish · 12/09/2015 22:31

Agree about toes. I'm far more adventurous when it comes to painting my toenails. Painted nails improve the appearance of my feet no end, and it looks good to my eye. Shame I don't get the same effect with my fingernails.

Blarblarblar · 12/09/2015 22:33

Pat Butcher is my icon, I wear a leopard coat too Grin

squoosh · 12/09/2015 22:35

Feeling like La Butcher has got to be a good thing!

squoosh · 12/09/2015 22:36

I'm more likely to paint my toes as the feeling of nail polish on my fingers irritates me after a while. That's why I haven't tried gel nails, worried I'd try and peel them off after a week and be left without any finger nails!

Giraffe5 · 12/09/2015 22:38

I just don't get blue nails especially the light blue. Navy look ok.

I feel like a corpse in blue/green

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 12/09/2015 22:44

Ha blue shades are my favourites Grin

Saying that, I have small and always short nails (by long habit/choice - in fact I can't stand the feel of having even medium-length nails now), so a lot of the "usual" colours (glam reds, nudes etc) can look a bit odd on them but I think unusual colours look good on me.

BoskyCat · 12/09/2015 22:49

I only do my toes and I should not give a shit but there is something about plain, bright red that feels a bit wrong. It's partly the "sexually available" connotations. Not that I care if someone thinks I am, but more that I don't want blokes to think I've deliberately done it to send that signal IYSWIM (rather than just liking it). But the other thing is it is too like blood and makes me think of horrendous toe accidents!

I do notice other people's and am impressed if they have something really unusual or adventurous on.

stripytees · 12/09/2015 22:51

Dark shades suit me better than light but I own about 50 different nail polishes and don't care what anyone thinks.

squoosh · 12/09/2015 22:53

It wouldn't occur to me that red nails signal sexual availability. That seems very 1940s femme fatale!

squoosh · 12/09/2015 22:54

Do you paint your own nails stripy? I can never get mine that neat!

BoskyCat · 12/09/2015 22:59

I know squoosh it seems mad that I make that association, but I do. I'm in my 40s so maybe its an 80s thing?
