1990s flashback - the bodysuit!

I know this will probably be greeted with revulsion and contemptuous pity, but can you still get these anywhere? I need something along these lines to fit under a slim fitting skirt. I'm obviously no good at tucking myself in because I usually look like a bag of spuds.

Its a blouse or shirt style I'm after, by the way, not a body con lace number. Those definitely still exist but .

I can't say I have any longing for another go at the instant guaranteed back and front wedgie that was the bodysuit.

LornMowa · 12/06/2015 17:31

My SIL wore one on her wedding day in the 1990s. She arrived fashionably late for the wedding then decided she needed a quick pee and went into the adjoining church hall loos. The whole congregation and the groom waited about 15 minutes and she still didn't return. Her mum went to look for her and after another 10 minutes they finally emerged. Apparently it had taken the 2 of them to get the poppers done up!

The photographers assistant said that she always just moves the gusset aside without undoing it when peeing which is a trick I have now adopted when I need a trip to the loo whilst swimming - saves me having to struggle with my swimming cossie when its all wet.

merrymouse · 12/06/2015 17:51

They are very cosy and keep your kidneys warm.

sisterofmercy · 12/06/2015 18:04

I had no idea people just hoicked them aside when going to the loo. If only I'd known in the late 80s!!! I used to undo them and then struggle to do them up again. I too have done the embarrassing flappy tail thing.

They were uncomfortable because I had a long body. I should have gone a size or two bigger as suggested above.

I had a lovely velvet body which could have been worn more often if I'd been a bit wiser. Gah.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 12/06/2015 20:10

I had a bottle green one from topshop which I wore with red Levi 501s and a green velvet jean style jacket from river island. Cripes I was slim back then, didn't think it though.

southeastastra · 12/06/2015 20:39

yes you have to hoik them aside, the best ones don't have poppers. get a nicely made one and they're fab

spanky2 · 12/06/2015 21:22

Trying to get them done up while drunk. Student happy times...

soundedbetterinmyhead · 12/06/2015 21:27

I remember my poppers pinging off when I sat down when out drinking and a lady kindly offered me a safety pin to close up the gusset. I had had far too much cider and nearly did myself permanent damage trying to 'sort it out' in the ladies. Those things were lethal in the wrong hands.

lurkingaround · 12/06/2015 21:34

Oh I loved my bodysuits back when. So smooth, no bulk, no fixing my top. No abdominal girth to speak of... Happy memories. I do remember many nights out, nearly toppling over in the toilets, hitting my head off the toilet door trying to do up the fecking poppers. Grin

flightywoman · 12/06/2015 21:57

I think I still have a couple in a bag somewhere...and i still think about one I didn't buy that was gone when I went back for it. it was a dusty grey/purple, gorgeous.

I loved them, and got quite handy at doing up the poppers while utterly leathered.

Aussiemum78 · 13/06/2015 01:16

My body suit went with my groovy green jeans. And had shoulder pads.

Those were the days!

Coastingit · 13/06/2015 03:50

A bodysuit with shoulder pads! Grin

Pics or it didn't happen.

ByronBaby · 13/06/2015 03:51

Mine was a dusty purple - from Oasis. Loved it, but a complete bugger to do up, again when pissed. These items were a complete mystery to men. I remeber once being asked "what the fucking hell is this nightmare?' after some Scouse lad had just spent 20 mins trying to wrestle my clothing off.

LoadsaBlusher · 13/06/2015 07:47

Loved a bodysuit.
I had a white ribbed scoop neck style from BHS , used to wear it with a short A-line denim button up skirt, knee high socks, chunky platforms and floppy hat . ( like Blossom!)
I thought I was like a Just Seventeen cover girl GrinGrinBlush

PetiteBateau · 13/06/2015 09:01

I had lace ones & also used to wear spandex leotards as tops Grin in the late 80's / early 90's

Lulioli · 13/06/2015 09:24

This snippet may seem relevant.....a friend who 'is in the know' informed me that Neil Diamond wore a blouson style body when performing on stage! Think shirt on the top half attached to poppered knickers underneath. It's so when he does all his arm waving during a big number his shirt does not ride up. Very practical but makes me shudder how he may look with his trousers off! And this was at the height of his 'sexy' phase in the 80s.....Altogether now Sweet Caroline!

squizita · 13/06/2015 09:26

Loadsa yesterday I saw a student with the body/button a line combo. Simultaneously felt nostalgic and VERY OLD as I worked out she was doing the same with her 90s style as I did with 70s/60s style in the 90s.

squizita · 13/06/2015 09:28

Just had a flashback to putting one leg on top of the bog roll holder in a small town Ritzies to do the poppers up. All that dosh my mum spent on dance classes well spent eh. Grin

DurhamDurham · 13/06/2015 09:46

Lulioli Neil Diamond had a 'sexy period'.......are you sure Grin

The thought of him in a poppered body/shirt has out me right off my porridge.

chairmeoh · 13/06/2015 10:09

Grin Neil Diamond!

I had loads of these back in the 90s. Very stylish.

But I never worked out which order everything was supposed to on - knickers, tights, body? Or what if you were really being sexy - knickers, suspender belt, body? Or sussies,, knickers, body?

BriarRainbowshimmer · 13/06/2015 10:24

OK so I understand, it gives smooth lines under clothes. Is it the only underwear you wear then if you wear one, the leotard itself? No bra/knickers? Confused

squizita · 13/06/2015 10:36

I wear non vpl (g string or big pants) with mine. Though crucial the body itself is not too small or you get 4 boob syndrome on your bum cheeks! Grin

Ketchuphidestheburntbits · 13/06/2015 12:50

I remember getting rather sweaty while wearing them the first time round. Definitely best avoided during the menopause years!

BitOfFun · 13/06/2015 13:38

Ah, the days of the poppered body and high-waist jeans. No bike-parking bumcracks going on in the 90s. It was a more genteel era.
