1990s flashback - the bodysuit!

I know this will probably be greeted with revulsion and contemptuous pity, but can you still get these anywhere? I need something along these lines to fit under a slim fitting skirt. I'm obviously no good at tucking myself in because I usually look like a bag of spuds.

Its a blouse or shirt style I'm after, by the way, not a body con lace number. Those definitely still exist but .

www.boohoo.com/page/search?q=Bodysuits

Boohoo have a fair few styles and colours

DD laughed herself sick at the bodysuit in American Apparel.
Crew necked with a bum string that would chafe your piles no end Shock

BriarRainbowshimmer · 11/06/2015 23:38

Can someone explain what the point of bodysuits are. They just seem really impractical.

squizita · 12/06/2015 11:16

I actually find them really useful and am glad they're back (they've been back for about 3 seasons now).

My uses:

  • very smooth, fitted look under a skirt /trousers and jacket
  • great under anything with a feature waist (belt, high waist, low rise)
  • I like short/cropped and have had a baby this year. belly is stripy as anything. Body enables me to wear a layer over.
  • modesty under chiffon shirts
...they're just smoother than vests.

I always err big with the sizing, and NO SQUARE PLASTIC POPPERS Shock for obvious reasons.

squizita · 12/06/2015 11:19

Oh and forgot to answer OP.

H&M and Primark (undies dept) definitely had some recently. Debenhams sometimes do too. Check the undies dept, often ones that pass as outerwear are right next to skimpy ones.

"They never worked for me. My body is long so all a body suit did was give me a poppered wedgie. Not comfortable."

Same here. I think I actually had popper-shaped bruises on my undercarriage.

Also now they just remind me of a baby's popper-under-the-nappy vest.

Becauseicannes · 12/06/2015 11:24

American apparel?

nannyplumislostinspace · 12/06/2015 11:26

Victoria's Secret sometimes have them in the clothing section.

MrsSnow · 12/06/2015 11:27

I use to love mine. Not sure I'd want to go back but they were excellent back in the day.

FrugalFashionista · 12/06/2015 11:31

I have a short body and relatively long legs, bodysuits were my favorite thing. Back in the 1990s they also helped my tights to stay on place. I'm from the North where winters are snowy, opaques and woolen tights were essential. Plus they gave me a really seamless, slim line, my tops stayed in place too. I've always loved clean silhouettes, I don't do oversized and baggy.

Jumpsuits are very problematic for bathroom breaks, we love them nevertheless Wink

DurhamDurham · 12/06/2015 11:33

I'm sure my daughter bought one from Primark recently as she needed something to go with a v tight skirt that didn't add 'bulk' but didn't want a cropped vest. She's 18, she can get away with such clothing Grin

I'm not saying you can't it's just if you'd seen my daughter's outfit on her last night out you would understand.

chevronstripes · 12/06/2015 11:43

Ha Sassy at least you did yours up. I spent an evening at the student union with my black lacy gusset flapping in the breeze.

squoosh · 12/06/2015 11:55

All this mention of bodysuits is giving me flashbacks to teenage discos. Those poppers were the bane of every 1990s teenage boy's life.

squoosh · 12/06/2015 11:56

They were the 90s version of a chastity belt!

FrugalFashionista · 12/06/2015 12:06

I think I also had some hook and eyelet closures, even more challenging for the average male Wink

Coastingit · 12/06/2015 12:36

Oh I loved my bodysuits.

A jade green long sleeved turtleneck one, and a short sleeved scoop neck floral one - both from River Island. The floral one I would probably wear now! With a tube skirt maybe.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 12/06/2015 13:09

I am sure I read an interview in the 90s with Honor Blackman where she said her seamstress did this to normal blouses.Grin

TollgateDebs · 12/06/2015 14:48

I remember the first time round and most of them were awful, especially when you tried to work around being in a toilet the size of a broom cupboard! However, I had a brilliant Hanes one, expensive but worth it, which really worked well with trouser suits. However, I moved on to wearing swimsuits (and still do now). More comfortable, built in bra shelf and does not ride up. They have their place when the outfit demands.

TollgateDebs · 12/06/2015 14:50

Sorry for the However repeats - must be hungry and off to get something now!

ScrambledEggAndToast · 12/06/2015 15:42

GrinGrin Haha, a body suit GrinGrin

Superlovely · 12/06/2015 16:36

Just don't get too drunk, forget to do up the poppers and then walk around with a little tail.
Obviously not that I ever did this.... Ahh the 90's !!

KateSMumsnet · 12/06/2015 16:51

I bloody love a body suit. I had a black one from Topshop that I wore to death

southeastastra · 12/06/2015 17:21
