I've complained about my hair - was I being out of order? Pics included.

I showed my hairdresser a photo of the hair that I wanted to achieve, and she said ooh lovely, will do that for you now. Great!

I've got home and had a proper look and feel like I have roots already - the colour starts about 2cm from my head. I went back in just now and said I really wasn't complaining but was there anything she could do to fix it and I would happily pay to have it changed.

Shes quite brash anyway, but she basically has shouted at me and said what did I expect from foils, and its my fault for putting home dye on previously. I'm booked in to have an ash colour added next week at her suggestion, but I am feeling a bit embarrassed as there was other customers in there. I've been going to her for years but never complained before.

Is my hair normal for foils? Can I do anything to sort it without losing the colour? I'm a bit gutted - it was meant to be a treat as I've been feeling crap about myself.

I find foils never go right to the root but your hair looks as if you've got a month's regrowth.

ivykaty44 · 27/03/2015 14:41

Did you have a full colour or highlights?

Devora · 27/03/2015 14:42

I've never had foils so I'm no expert. But, erm, it looks like you've got dark roots to me. Can't believe your hairdresser shouted at you and blamed you. And I'm really sorry you're feeling so down - I understand why, in that light, you didn't feel able to tell your hairdresser that you WERE complaining, because you had every right to.

Hope someone comes along soon who can give you advice about putting it right.

alittleegglayonaleaf · 27/03/2015 14:42

Don't go back to her again, she's at it

twirlypoo · 27/03/2015 14:42

I've had foils before and I have never noticed it like this - I was being so nice and being careful not to blame anyone when I went in, and she really went for me - she actually ended the conversation "and thats you told!" but I feel like I am being touchy for minding, or was being over the top or something?

OP posts:
TywysogesGymraeg · 27/03/2015 14:43

It does show in the photo. I have foils, and I don't think they can get the colour right up to the scalp, but mine start an awful lot nearer my head than yours appear to. I wouldn't pay for remedial work, I would insist on them doing something for free - though you might need to accept that the end colour might not end up exactly how you wanted it to be.

You could ask for your roots to be coloured to the same as the highlights - which would make it less obvious, or have an all over colour, or perhaps have more highlights, going right up to your roots.

Don't worry about causing a fracas (to use a current term) - hairdresser should be pleased to put things right if you're not happy.

twirlypoo · 27/03/2015 14:44

I'm crap at hair Ivykate (can you tell Grin0 but I think it was a full colour? All of my hair was in foils of different shades (is that a full colour?!?)

OP posts:
ThatBloodyWoman · 27/03/2015 14:44

You look more like you're due to go to the hairdressers than you've just been tbh,and I feel rotten saying that.
I'd not be happy at all.

alittleegglayonaleaf · 27/03/2015 14:48

The hairdresser seems to think she's the bees knees and her pride has been shattered because you have dared to tell her she's made a cock-up, hence her ugly reaction… Please don't go back to her she has no right to speak to you like that and you deserve to have your hair made up by a professional who respects you, your opinion and can do a good job - plenty more hairdressers in the sea, really!

twirlypoo · 27/03/2015 14:49

Oh please don't feel rotten! I was asking opinions cos I thought I was being cheeky in asking her to fix it - I'm glad I'm not going mad!

Is there anything I can do to fix it? I am not sure I want to go back if I am honest but I'm broke so not sure can go anywhere else.

Also, why does she think its cos I've used a packet dye in the past? It didn't make sense to me but I was confused. She has suggested putting over an Ash toner to change the roots? or said I can wait for 4 weeks and she will cover it by putting in more colours?

Does any of the above sound viable to someone who knows about hair?

Thank you all for replying, I wasn't sure it was just normal and I'd never noticed before Confused

Foils on top of box colour, five weeks re growth and a photo for comparison. I think that's not the best job and I wouldn't go back, but I would call and speak to the manager and ask for a refund or something. As you are a regular they will know you are genuinely unhappy!

Siarie · 27/03/2015 14:50

A good colourist won't leave lines or huge amounts of root, there will be a few millimetres of root and thats it.

They start too far from your parting for sure, sorry.

Don't go back to your hairdresser, she's bad at her job and bloody rude to boot.

Flowers for you

twirlypoo · 27/03/2015 14:55

Ahh that is a really useful comparison, thank you thetroubleis Sadly though it is a small local salon so she is the owner.... I know she has slagged clients off in the past so suspect the whole street will know by now that I have dared even say as much as I have done.

Maybe I just need to chalk it up and find a new hairdresser. Bugger :(

twirlypoo · 27/03/2015 14:57

Cross posted there, thank you everyone.

I have to go into a meeting now, but will email her afterwards and just cancel the appointment. I wasn't sure I was over reacting, so thank you for reassuring me.

I think I'm stuck with the roots till next month at the earliest now though as I am super broke so to goto anyone else isn't possible straight away. Arghhh!!

When did you use the box colour?
If it was anything in the last 6 weeks I can understand (slightly) why the colour wouldn't have taken on the roots BUT those foils are one of 2 things...

  1. she didn't get close enough to the root, this can be and is done with foils, the stylist just has to be careful of 'bleed' which won't happen if you are careful and good!
  2. too fine, as in she weaved the hair so finely that the colour is there and close but blends in.

Even with a box colour (if that is preventing) then she should have said and changed the tint to help 'bring the colour up' and not excused this.
Sorry OP but the colour application is shoddy.

pocketsaviour · 27/03/2015 15:11

Wow, I don't know much about hair but no matter what the issue was she was bang out of order to shout at you like that! Does she own the place or is there a manager? I would be leaving a very scathing review (primarily focussing on the customer service) on Google and on Yell, I think!

QueenBean · 27/03/2015 15:16

Really sorry but will add that it doesn't look good, starts way too far from the roots

Does she work in a salon? I would call her manager and tell her that you're not happy, someone more senior should be able to fix it

Tell them about her attitude too, terrible behaviour

You sound lovely btw

missmartha · 27/03/2015 15:17

I have foils and my stylist gets a base colour and stipples it into my roots, all over my head which shades into the foiled highlights, lifting and flipping the foils as he goes iyswim.

I never have roots showing, well I could if I waited long enough for it to well and truly grow out, but no, no sign of roots.

He certainly wouldn't yell at me in front of other customers, in fact I can't imagine him yelling at me ever. I wouldn't go back if he did.

Devora · 27/03/2015 15:49

If she couldn't achieve a good result, she should have warned you BEFORE doing the job. Sorry, you really are going to have to find a new hairdresser.

passmethewineplease · 27/03/2015 15:52

Well foils are never going to get on the root s, that's a given but she should of been able to get closer to the root than that. When I foiled I really pulled the hair tight, this enabled me to get as close to the root as possible.

SuperFlyHigh · 27/03/2015 15:52

She's a crap colorist sorry to be blunt. And she should try to fix it not be rude to you!

I'd get a recommendation before getting more colour done - my colorist right now she is excellent and does fine, close to the scalp foils and also in the right colours and breaks it up etc when needed so it doesn't look blocky.

gamerchick · 27/03/2015 16:00

She had no right speaking to you like that. Post a complaint with photo on her salon Facebook page.

Or just cancel and don't go back and spread the word if anyone comments on your hair.
