I've complained about my hair - was I being out of order? Pics included.

I showed my hairdresser a photo of the hair that I wanted to achieve, and she said ooh lovely, will do that for you now. Great!

I've got home and had a proper look and feel like I have roots already - the colour starts about 2cm from my head. I went back in just now and said I really wasn't complaining but was there anything she could do to fix it and I would happily pay to have it changed.

Shes quite brash anyway, but she basically has shouted at me and said what did I expect from foils, and its my fault for putting home dye on previously. I'm booked in to have an ash colour added next week at her suggestion, but I am feeling a bit embarrassed as there was other customers in there. I've been going to her for years but never complained before.

Is my hair normal for foils? Can I do anything to sort it without losing the colour? I'm a bit gutted - it was meant to be a treat as I've been feeling crap about myself.

Do complain on FB, she's done a poor job. Sorry :(

PUGaLUGS · 27/03/2015 16:05

That's how mine looks after 6 weeks of colour and foils.

Change hairdressers.

Why couldn't she use a cap if foils leave such a gap?

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 27/03/2015 16:19

That's not good! Foils can definitely be done well and get closer to the root than that. Good luck getting it sorted OP.

NeedABumChange · 27/03/2015 16:21

Sorry but that's awful for freshly dyed hair. I've had foils and they always are close enough to my head to look natural ifswim. No obvious roots.

She sounds terrible, I'd find somekne else.

LiDLrichardsPistachioSack · 27/03/2015 16:23

That looks like shoddy work love, sorry. I'm shocked at how she spoke to you and even more shocked that she didn't take into account the previous colour already in your hair. Had she done the foils across your parting instead of parallel to it (IYSWIM?) and applied a colour at your roots in between to gently lift them a bit, or even toned your roots at the basin, it would have been much better. Oh OP I wish I could sort it out for you! I think what I'd recommend if you're skint is getting her to fix it anyway by applying a toner to blend the roots and even throwing a few more foils along the parting. And fgs don't pay!! She should guarantee her work and do her best to make you happy. can you tell I'm a hairdresser

passmethewineplease · 27/03/2015 16:26

Cap highlights are only really ideal for short hair they can be quite painful on long hair. It's also hard to guess where abouts the colour is going given that the hair is under the cap. With foils you can place them where you want.

mumofsnotbags · 27/03/2015 16:33

I have coloured my hair for years at home, finally had foils put in middle of feb and hairdresser dyed the rest of my own colour flipping up the foils as she went.

My roots now 5 weeks on look like yours do a few days after. same as troubleis picture, my roots are exactly the same.

She hasn't got close to the scalp at all, and Id agree with others who have said she is a crap colourist. Id be tempted to post a link to this up on her facebook page. To do crap colouring is one thing and id be embarrassed to go back in and face her wondering what she would do badly to my hair next.

But to shout at you in a room full of customers is another thing,She knows she's done wrong and she's gone on the defensive, fight fire with fire.

kittypinot · 27/03/2015 16:39

Its a lot of money to pay for foils to end up with a colour like that. Do you have a training salon in a collage near you? They are very cheap and you would get a salon finish.

CaptainAnkles · 27/03/2015 16:45

I wouldn't go back anywhere that I had been spoken to so rudely tbh. She can't care that much about your custom if she won't listen to your views on the work she has done and shouts at you in front of other customers.

Roussette · 27/03/2015 17:03

I have full head colour and foils and my bloke who does it, gets really really close to the scalp by pulling the hair. It takes weeks to show like yours.

She really should NOT have shouted at you, how horrible. If it were me, I'd be voting with my feet and couldn't bear to go back there.

twirlypoo · 27/03/2015 18:50

Sorry I am only just replying - I finished work and just put ds to bed.

I think the last colour I did myself was on about 4 months ago, but she wouldn't have known it was that long ago. I've used her for years and she always makes a joke of having to fix my hair after I've attempted to dye it myself. I think that's why I was struggling with this, the salon is literally round the corner from me - we aren't friends as such, but she lives locally and I bump into her at the shops and have a natter, she got me a card when ds was born etc. If this had been a salon in a shopping centre or a chain I would have felt justified in kicking off both about the roots and the way I was spoken to. Its a bit more blurred lines this way so I don't feel I can kick off on fb or link this thread or anything.

I think I am going to cancel this appt to fix it and just not use the salon again - there have been other issues there (it would be like jeremy kyle if I posted everything!) and my confidence in her - as well as my patience with being spoken to that way, has just gone.

Now to save the pennies to fix this mess!

Thank you all again for telling me I wasn't over reacting. I really was doubting myself Flowers

Hi op I have foil highlights every 6 weeks, and my hair looks like yours when I'm due for an app, sorry!

I can't afford salon prices that often so I use a mobile hairdresser, she is great and half the price. Ask around for recommendations.

burnishedsilver · 27/03/2015 20:31

I have foils. It takes 4 - 6 weeks to get to looking like that.

Don't go back to her again. She has handled your complaint appallingly. She has made no attempt to keep you as a customer.

WipsGlitter · 27/03/2015 21:23

I love the way your hair is pinned up! Did you do that yourself?

twirlypoo · 27/03/2015 22:32

That picture isn't me sadly (I bet she doesn't have roots for a start Grin) but I stole it off Pinterest.

If I attempted to do that with my hair I can guarantee I would turn out like worzel gummidge instead!

I wouldn't be happy with that. I'd agree with going somewhere else.

RL20 · 28/03/2015 10:46

Unfortunately as I'm using the Mumsnet app I can't see photos!
But I just had to comment. As a trained hairdresser I normally just colour my hair myself - as much as I can anyway! When I was about 11 weeks pregnant I had constant nausea and sickness and was feeling rubbish about myself and hadn't had my hair coloured for ages and didn't have the energy at all to do it myself. So I booked in at a local hairdressers with a woman I knew of (a senior stylist there). After showing her the photos and her even showing her boss to clarify what she was doing etc, they both agreed that she would do such and such and use so and so. I had a mish mash of warm brown and a slightly darker brown. What I needed doing was chunky foils (she even repeated this herself), and a dark brown going on all of the hair that wasn't in the foils so that I no longer had the warmth.
Well, despite her claiming she knew what I meant and nodding along to the photos, she decided to do thin foils, and no colour in between. I was absolutely gutted to be handing over the £45 and so angry. I got in my car and burst into tears on the phone to my other half. It all happened so quickly that I just didn't know what to say, my other half was furious and told me to go back in and complain but I just didn't have the energy to, plus there was other customers in there.
She would definitely have retaliated in the way that your hairdresser did as she is also quite brash.
Moral of the story is that I echo what the others have said - she's made no effort to keep you as a client by the sounds of it. Find another reputable salon/stylist at the recommendations from any friends if you can. Sometimes complaints get nowhere with people like her

MargotLovedTom · 28/03/2015 11:02

I read the bit where you said the photo you put up is what you were aiming for, yet everyone is sayng it looks terrible? Confused

So is your hair worse than that photo?

Twinklestein · 28/03/2015 11:15

Good hairdressers can get foil very close to the root. They also don't charge to fix it if you're not happy with the result. Most of all they do not shout at customers and say - "that's you told!"

If a hairdresser behaved like that to me, they'd never see me again.

RL20 · 28/03/2015 11:34

I also agree with what Twinklestein has said.
It's just laziness. When I was training, if the foil wasn't close enough to the root, we would have failed. There really is no excuse for her not to rectify it

twirlypoo · 28/03/2015 12:36

It's been really bothering me today - I've decided to cancel appointment but email her and say why. I suspect I Will be slagged off something rotten, but I also hope a small part of her realises that I've been going to her for years and have never complained before. Im Gojng to attach the photos too. Wish me luck! Thank you all again for making me realise I wasn't over reacting Thanks

Margot, I've put up photos of my hair and also what I was aiming for as a comparison. People are saying my hair looks rubbish not the photo of what it should be like (well, I think anyway!)
