Wedding dress that's not weddingy (if that's actually a word)

Can anyone help me find a dress for my wedding? In my head I'm looking for something silk, fluid, knee or midi length and am really not looking at a traditional wedding dress at all. I'm late 40s, 5'9 and a 10-12. My best bits are probably my legs and my collar bones/chest, but I'm not a great fan of my upper arms amd strapless is a no no. I love the style of Alexander McQueen or Vivienne Westwood and am looking for something relatively simple, but perhaps a bit quirky or asymetric perhaps, in white or ivory? Planning to wear killer heels!
I've lost the plot searching net a porter etc, so if anyone can give me fresh inspiration, I'd be very grateful. Budget up to 1500.

Ghost?

cashmerecardigans · 23/03/2015 21:13

I do llike the styles, but really want silk not man made (I'm sure Ghost used to be silk years ago!). I love the fluidity of them, but maybe a bit plain?

this or this is gorgeous. Not silk, though.

Pixa · 23/03/2015 21:35

I haven't seen their new collection, but if I recall correctly, Kitty and Dulcie used to do some fab not weddingy wedding dresses. Smile

tethersend · 23/03/2015 21:36

Massively reduced but still over budget...

cashmerecardigans · 23/03/2015 21:42

Wow, Tethersend, love love love that last one, but I don't think I could go that far on budget. Definitely more me than the others though Smile

This is quite traditional but looks lovely on the hanger in-store, & would be fab with your collarbones/height/legs

I am not an expert on fashion but am just going to post a few different dresses and see if any of them helps with your search.
This one is from monsoon; uk.monsoon.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/mon_4.1/7457064608

Are you really excited??

cashmerecardigans · 23/03/2015 22:07

Yes! We've been together ages, so it was a big surprise! Aiming for relaxed low key day (apart from fab frock and shoes) likely to be ceremony and meal for family and friends or catered barbecue at home. Hence need for amazingly stylish dress, but not weddingy!

Sounds like a great celebration. Congratulations!

These are by Gill harvey, I am not sure of the prices though.

This is great fun.

Pixa · 23/03/2015 22:23

Have you had a look on the Harvey Nichols website? Smile

cashmerecardigans · 23/03/2015 22:30

I had a quick look - nothing leapt out at me, but will look properly tomorrow Smile

Try matchesfashion.com. They have some fab stuff

Few suggestions here:

This one by Rick Owens is simple but gorgeous:

Also this one by Phillip Lim:

Both of those are 100% silk I think.

This one is by Roland Mouret, is on your budget but is silk blend and it's edgier so not sure if suitable:

This one I love, it's a little bit quirky but in a super stylish way:

Hope you can find something to give you an idea out of those...;)

gb.maxmara.com/p-8221125106001-re-water
apart from showing your arms this is lovely, silk, weddingy without being a wedding dress and £900.

This would be different. gb.maxmara.com/p-6221065706001-vitalba-ivory

loveareadingthanks · 24/03/2015 12:18

This is completely off the wall but this is an original 1960s silk wedding dress and I think it's one of those dresses that are a bit meh in pics but would look amazing on.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 24/03/2015 12:24

Doesn't show your legs but silk and asymmetrical

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 24/03/2015 12:35

Too much shoulder?

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 24/03/2015 12:38

With a print?

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 24/03/2015 12:43

Victoria Beckham with a different belt probably?

lavendersun · 24/03/2015 12:45

I always seem to go to max mara for very special occasions - I really like the pianoforte range and wore a lovely silk shift dress from there when I got married, still wear it 12 years on so good value really.

cashmerecardigans · 24/03/2015 16:48

Wow, just logged back in - what a fabulous bunch you are - loads of ideas here.
Best for me - I love the Rick Owns one - that could be a real possibility and I also adored the one highlighted as maybe too much shoulder, but it might just be a bit too much flesh for me. I thought the print one was lovely - maybe too informal, but I love the shape of it. The colour of the Maxmara was gorgeous, but I'm not great at waisted dresses as, due to my height, I often find the waist sits too high.
Didn't really like the VB pleats, loved the Roland Mouret - but a bit toooo short. The last one from 3luckystars was very pretty although I'm not mad on the lace arms.
Thanks to everyone - very much appreciated. I'll have a look at Matches as I'd not thought of that and keep going Smile
