Can anyone find me something that makes me look slim?

tabulahrasa · 27/02/2015 12:18

I've got a thing to go to next week where it kind of matters how slim or otherwise I look (it's all a bit embarrassing so I'd rather not say what if that's ok).

I've lost a lot of weight, but I'm still about 4lb from the right BMI for my height. (5 ft 8)

So, there's no real dress code...I'm thinking on the casual side more than night out or full on smart though. I do have some skinny jeans that I look good in, so just a top would be fine, or a whole outfit...I'm short of clothes anyway as mine don't fit anymore.

I'm a 14, I could possibly do a big 12, but I'd go for 14 if it's online.

My stomach isn't amazing, the rest of me is ok, but fitted stuff suits me better than too flowing...oh and I'm a bit busty, so high necklines don't work.

Most colours are fine, I have slightly olivey skin and dark hair.

Can anyone help me? I don't really have a style as I'm so used to just having to buy anything that is big enough and isn't too awful.

Oh and I'm 36 and people tell me I look younger, though I'm not convinced about that...in case it matters.

You sound like you look amazing anyway, and are maybe looking for an amazing outfit. But how is your posture ? that can make all the difference to how you look and present yourself Smile

tabulahrasa · 27/02/2015 12:51

Maybe it would help if I said what I was doing...I didn't want to because I'm kind of uncomfortable with it...

I've been doing slimming world, so has my DP, we've lost quite a significant amount of weight and well, we've to go for their couple of the year competition Blush I wouldn't, but my DP is really keen, so...I want to at least make an effort and there may be photos, so I kind of want to look as slim as it's possible to.

Now I feel awkward, lol.

So, I'm a jeans and jumper or tshirt person usually or for most events or whatever I just buy things I like and they mostly suit me...and if not quite, I don't really get too hung up on it if I like them.

So I'm good with foundation underwear and have it already, my posture's not bad, I'm quite happy with how I look now given that I haven't finished losing weight.

But I kind of need to look slim, where I usually pick clothes because they are a nice colour or have something I like rather than what looks slimming.

NimpyWWindowmash · 27/02/2015 12:56

a nice fitted dress?

I always think there is something slimming about a dress, rather than a separate top /bottom.

No pattern, just navy or black or charcoal.

Accessorise with great earrings and fab funky shoes, so it's not "boring"

DarylDixonsDarlin · 27/02/2015 12:57

Wrap dresses usually look pretty good while disguising a tummy slightly, at this time of year opaque tights and boots would be fine with it? I haven't bought for a while so cant recommend a particular one, but I noticed lots of places had a 20% code this week? (white stuff, joules etc places like that)

specialsubject · 27/02/2015 13:02

isn't the point that you've lost loads of weight and are now near-as-dammit where you should be?

surely the before-and-afters will tell the whole story?

most clothes that fit will make you look the weight you are.

Hoppinggreen · 27/02/2015 13:03

Dark slim rather than skinny jeans over high heeled boots, a top with a v neck and a smart blazer type jacket usually knocks a few pounds off me.
Good luck !

tabulahrasa · 27/02/2015 13:04

Dresses scare me a bit tbh, lol, I mean I'm quite open to wearing one, I'm just used to having to be extremely careful about them as they're tricky when you're the size I was previously.

I know wrap dresses are a good shape...but I don't know where you get them from, or what the right footwear is Blush

Sorry, I am a bit rubbish - I was a size 22 you see, it really was a case of, where does that large and will it not look too hideous previously.

OP posts:
tabulahrasa · 27/02/2015 13:08

specialsubject - yes, I know you're right, I'm a weird mix of slightly competitive and slightly embarrassed about how big I was though, rofl.

Well done on your amazing result!
I have a pair of black Mint Velvet skinny jeans - and whenever I wear them, everyone says wow you have lost weight . I haven't ! They are just incredibly flattering , despite the fact that I am no stick insect . Do try them- worn with heels and a pretty too this might be just the outfit perhaps . John Lewis is a stockist of the range .

queenbrunhilda · 27/02/2015 13:35

OP this, and this look very flattering and whilst not wrap dresses are in that ballpark.

But sounds like you should be treating yourself to something that makes you swoon with you own gorgeousness and feel fantastic!! What would your fantasy most perfect dress ever look like?

tabulahrasa · 27/02/2015 14:34

Haha - my fantasy dress would be some ludicrous OTT thing, probably with sequins Blush but I'm going for more sensible as it's a daytime thing.

I'll have a look at those suggestions, thanks.

tethersend · 27/02/2015 14:49

Something simple like this could look fantastic.

PulpsNotFiction · 27/02/2015 14:57

Wow! Well done! Why don't you go to one of the main department stores and book in with a personal shopper for an hour? I've never don't it myself but I've heard good reports about HoF and debenhams.

I'm sure they'd love to help.

(Just realised its next week but this could be a good idea for a new wardrobe for spring/summer?)

Go on, show us your before and after pics .........Smile

FauxFox · 27/02/2015 16:42

Jeans with a peplum top and a load of bangles and bracelets? A peplum cut can be slimming as it accentuates your waist.

superbfairywren · 27/02/2015 17:45

Can I just say the biggest congratulations to you! That is one heck of a lot of weight loss, you must be so proud of yourself! If you have time I would second going to a department store and getting a personal shopper, or finding a friend/family member to go with you. You will have become so used to just buying what fits, especially whilst losing weight as you probably didn't want to invest in clothes with more weight to lose. An outsider will be able to suggest things you wouldn't think of and get you out of your safe jeans and a jumper uniform and once you've tried a few different things you will have more of an idea of what you are looking for. Good luck with the competition!

Amrapaali · 27/02/2015 17:59

How about this monochrome dress? The side panels make you look even slimmer.

Or go for a pencil skirt with your favourite top.

tabulahrasa · 28/02/2015 15:24

I've ordered this because, unicorns!

Do you think that's ok? Or should I just keep that for something more unicorn appropriate? (No I don't know what that would be, lol)

I don't really have after photos I'm afraid, I have about a stone ago ones...but I'm actually aiming for about midpoint of a healthy bmi, so I'm not done yet.

OP posts:
Bonsoir · 28/02/2015 15:27

How about chic sportswear - Net-a-Sporter style?

BetweenDogandWolf · 28/02/2015 15:32

Now I want that unicorn dress too!

tabulahrasa · 28/02/2015 15:38

There's chic sportswear? I have running tights from primark...do they count? Lol, I mostly wear them where no-one can see me, because I'm running, badly, and I try not to do that in front of people.

I like the unicorns Blush I just haven't really got a clue about clothes.

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/02/2015 15:40

How old are you? The unicorn dress is v sweet (I love a quirky print!) but it does look a bit teenage imho.

Please don't wear lux-sportswear or a Boden dress if you want something that makes you feel fantastic to celebrate your achievement.

LBD

Or something like this draped top with your jeans?

tethersend · 28/02/2015 15:47

Psst- Remus- I saw this and thought of you Smile

Sorry, OP, I would ditch the unicorn dress. I can only see it worn with leggings and a cardi, and the image in my head is not good.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/02/2015 15:50

Love it, Tethers. But too long for what I'm after! I want mid thigh on short-arse me.

queenbrunhilda · 28/02/2015 15:51

That black Whistles dress Remus has linked to is fab OP.
