Can anyone find me something that makes me look slim?

tabulahrasa · 27/02/2015 12:18

I've got a thing to go to next week where it kind of matters how slim or otherwise I look (it's all a bit embarrassing so I'd rather not say what if that's ok).

I've lost a lot of weight, but I'm still about 4lb from the right BMI for my height. (5 ft 8)

So, there's no real dress code...I'm thinking on the casual side more than night out or full on smart though. I do have some skinny jeans that I look good in, so just a top would be fine, or a whole outfit...I'm short of clothes anyway as mine don't fit anymore.

I'm a 14, I could possibly do a big 12, but I'd go for 14 if it's online.

My stomach isn't amazing, the rest of me is ok, but fitted stuff suits me better than too flowing...oh and I'm a bit busty, so high necklines don't work.

Most colours are fine, I have slightly olivey skin and dark hair.

Can anyone help me? I don't really have a style as I'm so used to just having to buy anything that is big enough and isn't too awful.

I'm 36...but wearing unicorns isn't out of character if that makes sense?

I'd quite happily wear that to something else and not be bothered if it's a bit young for me, so I'd just keep it, and it's cheap, so I'm quite happy to do that, but yes, that's what's bothering me about it as well, I think.

I do like that top though...

tethersend - I'm completely unimaginative and have boots fairly like the model is wearing, so I was pretty much going to wear it like that...

OP posts:
tethersend · 28/02/2015 16:48

I like the boots... Just not the dress, sorry.

If you like that sort of print, how about something like this?

tethersend · 28/02/2015 16:52

Remus, also saw this, but hard to gauge the length on that model.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/02/2015 16:54

I like that Biba dress.

H&M dress is nice, but I want mostly black with white stripes. Awkward as ever!

tethersend · 28/02/2015 17:05

I meant the black one with white stripes option- did it not show you that?

nilbyname · 28/02/2015 17:14

Well
Bloody
Done!

I would go for a red or black slim
Fitting dress, shoe boots, some interesting jewellery and feel totally wow! Screw the fact it's in the day time, I would be dressed the nines and loving every minute of it.

Or-
Skinny jeans- black, indigo or charcoal.
Heeled shoes or boots- very elongating and slimming and they make you stand well.
Silky blouse, pushy cat bows are very in and pretty. The high street is awash with them.
Great understated make-up, look for a bobby brown tutorial on you tube, makes a big difference to help you create a flawless fresh finish!
A statement cuff or two- top shop or primark or Zara.
Hair- any which way you like it.

Hats off to you. Have a brilliant day!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/02/2015 17:17

Tethers - nope. Blue and white, or white with stripes, or plain black.

tethersend · 28/02/2015 17:23

Ah, it's blue is it? My eyes...

tabulahrasa · 28/02/2015 17:27

I liked the dress because it was unicorns Blush rofl.

I can do boots, shoeboots, shoes...I have lots of those and am always willing to collect more, it's clothes I'm no good with.

I'm ok with make up as well, I mean I have a fair bit of that too and I can do most looks.

Face and feet tend to be bits you can focus on when clothes are not your friends...

I do like the phase 8 top remus linked to - I might go see if they have it in store so I can try it on.

I forgive you, oh Ancient One.

Tab - if you like 'cute' prints, this MV dress looks nice. Bloomin' expensive for polyester though.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/02/2015 17:29

Just found this thing of beauty too, if you like grey and are feeling rich.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/02/2015 17:31

This looks as if it would be very flattering too. But might be too work-ish.

tabulahrasa · 28/02/2015 17:34

The Karen millen dress is nice, but I need industrial underwear, so the open back would bother me.

aliciagardner · 28/02/2015 17:34

How about this dress black oasis dress looks like nothing but is extremely flattering (sounds like you have the same figure as me but probably bit slimmer! Would need a statement necklace to dress up.

Or with skinny jeans, this green top again, looks like nothing here but is extremely flattering for me.

aliciagardner · 28/02/2015 17:35

Mint velvet dress the Remus linked is gorgeous. Expensive but gorgeous.

mummop25 · 28/02/2015 20:38

Ok so things to think about
What are your best features? Make the most of them . It sounds like you are an hourglass /apple .
So necklines , waist flattering and tummy skimming clothes are key
To create long slim legs a pointed court heel is a must.
To create a slim leg the skinnys are great , make sure they are in a flat rinse colour as opposed to any fading or graining and of course dark colours are best.
With a top option for a skinny jean look, try a long line top as this will make you look narrower in the body. Drop the neckline with a V or cowl neck option.
Use a jacket to finish the outfit to give a strong shoulder and a waist.
Use a long necklace to elongate aswell.

If you want some links happy to provide suggestions

tabulahrasa · 28/02/2015 21:47

Best features? Um I quite like having collarbones...they're new, lol, my shoulders are ok...they're kind of weird bits to make the most of though?

I think I'm an apple mostly...so I know I have to be careful of my waist/stomach and busty enough that high necklines don't work.

Everything else is okish, not bad enough that I want to desperately cover it up, not amazing or anything, but ok in most things.

I'm quite happy to look at links - I like looking at all the stuff, even if nothing's quite made me go, I want that...apart from unicorns, lol. (I'll keep that for a friend's birthday party)

tabulahrasa · 28/02/2015 21:55

Oh and thanks for all the posters with links...they are helpful Flowers

aliciagardner · 01/03/2015 08:12

Have you looked here OP? Joy
Lots of tummy skimming dresses.

tabulahrasa · 01/03/2015 11:46

I was looking on Alicia's link...and more unicorns, is that any better than the other unicorns?

(Is quite taken with unicorn dresses now she knows they exist)

RonaldMcDonald · 01/03/2015 12:06

not exciting but will tick your boxes oo er

tabulahrasa · 01/03/2015 13:53

It's a nice colour, red suits me, bodycon dresses however do not I'm afraid...I clearly have the wrong body, lol.

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 01/03/2015 14:10

Lots of people don't like them, but I find the Ophelia dresses from Lindybop very slimming for an hourglass figure and I think they're beautiful. Can't link on phone, sorry. They're 50s style, to be worn with a net petticoat, thus creating a narrow waist, sweetheart neckline for demure cleavage and look nice with a bolero if you want to cover your arms. Not everyone's cup of tea and I've seen them very much scorned on here but I love them and think they're very flattering Smile

Araisaris · 01/03/2015 14:12

THIS is a really slimming top. Would be great with skinny trousers.
