I had lovely, wavy, long hair then I wanted it short.
'Stylist' wouldn't do what I wanted because it wouldn't suit me, let's try blah blah instead....

She gave a mixing bowl plonked on top of my head Sad

I went back the very next morning and they fixed it and best they could.
I just feel really old and frumpy and mumsy.....
Please help me?
What the hell should I do?!
Should I colour it?

It's shaved one side and horrible round Bob the other

You need to break it up a bit. Highlights/lowlights?

ColeHawlings · 20/02/2015 08:14

It's not an awful cut, just too much of a solid block of colour, I think.

RoganJosh · 20/02/2015 08:16

I think you need to take some straighteners to the fringe to make it look more modern.

Buttholelane · 20/02/2015 08:18

I think it needs colour aswell, what colour should I do?

Rogan, I dont have straighteners anymore

I love how short it is around the ear!

Google image short hairstyles for women....consider going for a full on crop?

sarahlux · 20/02/2015 08:20

I had this exact hairstyle and I loved it. I had blonde put through it to break it up

Quitelikely · 20/02/2015 08:24

Google victoria beckham bob.

Then choose which one you like. She has lots of cuts very similar to yours. Straightners will be needed unless you have time to blow dry each morning

ColeHawlings · 20/02/2015 08:25

If it was me, I think I'd put warmer tones of mid brown or subtley reddish tones through it.

zippyandbungle · 20/02/2015 08:26

I would go the whole hog with something like this. You have lovely petite features to pull it off.

I really like the short side.

Buttholelane · 20/02/2015 08:32

I think mid brown or reddish would look great too and I really like that style pictured too, thanks zippy.

Subtle highlights.

Its not a bad cut but a bit of a shock after long hair.

JoMunroTriesAgain · 20/02/2015 08:45

Try adding a bit of eyemake up....zip up your eyes as the fringe highlights them. A winged eyeliner and mascara.

Am also thinking a bit of product to mess it up/give texture too. Have you any putty or something similar? Adding product/texture may be what you need to save the expense/hassle of colour. I would try that first.

polyhymnia · 20/02/2015 08:48

I would definitely go to another hairdresser and also go for short both sides - that very asymmetric look is very hard to pull off, IMO. Also probably needs to be more choppy I think.

The picture of the short style posted is lovely but I'd get advice on exactly what to do plus on color from a good hairdresser.

Truckingalong · 20/02/2015 08:51

Never get yr hair cut short unless you're 18. Grow it is the best advice I have.

JoMunroTriesAgain · 20/02/2015 09:14

Trucking however great you think your advice, it is not particularly helpful for right now though is it? Hmm

weaselsquirrel · 20/02/2015 09:25

Trucking talk about kicking someone when their down!

Op you are not alone I have gone from hair past my shoulders to an inverted bob and I feel like I look old. Everyone is being positive but I think they are just being nice. It's actually more of a chore to style my hair at this length than when it was long. Back then I would just dry it or sometimes straighten but now I have to make sure the are no sticking out bits. I'm having to use the hair dryer, straightener and the babyliss big hair! I'm sorry I don't have any advice. You have a lovely face Smile

Rjae · 20/02/2015 09:30

I think it will look nicer with some mixed colours to give it more interest. I think it looks nice though. Maybe the fringe is a bit heavy.

Out of interest what style did you want that the stylist wouldn't do?

SoMuchForSubtlety · 20/02/2015 09:34

I had the shock of my life when I went from long hair to a very short crop. Every time I saw my reflection I got startled. That bit does get better over a few weeks.

I found the major key to short hair is styling product. Some kind of hair putty will help you add texture to it without being stiff or oily. I think you could keep the colour (if you can't face the high maintenance of highlights - I can't) if you use product in the right way. There is a particular hairdressery poking and tweaking with the product that makes it go less solid blob and more textured (that's a poor description, hopefully you know what I mean). Once you get it right though it's so EASY - mornings are a doddle, I just used to wash/product/go and it would dry looking perfect.

Re the cut I like it. I don't particularly get on with asymmetrical cuts personally as I'm not edgy enough but if the rest of your style lets you pull it off then go with it. Otherwise PP's suggestions about evening up to match the short side would also look good.

JoMunroTriesAgain · 20/02/2015 09:40

With some product I would suggest you "twist" it into kind of ringlets after you have put it in. This will cause the hair to clump together a bit - sounds grim but will then settle into something with more texture and movement. That may help it feel less frumpy. Seriously, try some product first. Cheaper option as well.

BerylStreep · 20/02/2015 09:46

I agree with those saying it needs product and texture in it.

(love threads with photos - I'm so nosy! Love to see what other MNers actually look like)

dajmibuzi · 20/02/2015 09:48

Yeah highlights, product to texture it up a bit ... When it's a smidge longer in a few weeks you could tong it too..

I'll find a pic hang on

dajmibuzi · 20/02/2015 09:50

Like this ... So not frumpy.

HolgerDanske · 20/02/2015 10:02

It's a very nice haircut and doesn't have to be boring and mumsy at all. Style it up a bit and add some funky highlights and there you go! I think you look good Smile

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/02/2015 10:07

Very Envy that your hair is sleek and straight- everyone saying "texture" I have wavy short hair and it's at the Pain in the Bum Stage.

I love the short side/long side , but YY to colour.

And maybe some Razor Cutting to give some texture ?
