Feeling the lurve BD....

hattymattie · 08/11/2014 21:29

I think Rudy may be right - it's a generationà l thing. My parents think it's very over the top to be enthusiatic about stuff.

herbaceous · 08/11/2014 21:45

My mum is pretty free with her praise, but her mother, my grandma, seemed to think it would spoil us, or something. I was the oldest of her grandchildren, and so the first to do all the milestones. When I got good grades for my o'levels, she said 'I'm sure [cousin x] will do better.' When I passed my driving test, and offered her a lift home, she said 'I think I'll wait until one of the others learns to drive'. Etc etc. Didn't affect me overmuch, but it must have been torture for my mum.

Apparently she did exactly the same to our cousins, maybe thinking the competition would spur us on.

The last time I saw her before she died, she held my hand and said 'You know, I did always love you, you know.' Sad Well why didn't you show it, you poor sad old thing?

Blackduck · 08/11/2014 22:06

:)

Blackduck · 08/11/2014 22:07

Feck Herbs they are just crappy things to say...

QueenQueenie · 08/11/2014 22:56

... plants slobbery kiss on BD

CointreauVersial · 08/11/2014 23:56

LOL at crepey love-in.

If we do get any casual visitors, lured by the other thread, they'll run away screaming. Grin

Herbs - we were always told how wonderful our cousins were compared to us. Eventually we were all more successful than them. I did tackle DM on this:"Why did you always compare me to X and tell me how fab she was compared to me?". She said " well their parents always told us that". So I guess our cousins were getting the praise.

NUFC69 · 09/11/2014 07:37

BD, you have outed me .. Not sure I can stay now. Grin Interesting that lots of people didn't understand the crepey thing: you obviously need to be a certain age to get the reference.

Had a bit of a nothing evening, not helped by the fact that DD had asked DH to pick her up from the Metro at approximately six o'clock after she had had a late lunch with ex works colleagues (to avoid her DH having to bundle up the DC near bedtime and take them out in the cold). So we didn't eat and waited and waited.... Eventually I texted her and there was an apologetic phone call to say that she had come home early so her DH had picked her up.

Auriga, sorry to hear about your DM, that's miserable.

Off to the village war memorial this morning for the service.

herbaceous · 09/11/2014 09:09

God, NU, I'd be fuming. Picking her up from the Metro? That does sound a little beyond the call of duty...

Doing some PGCE work this morning before going Up West to sing Fauré's Requiem and try not to cry.

NUFC69 · 09/11/2014 09:38

I was thinking about your DS this morning, Herbs; I received next year's programme for the Theatre Royal in Newcastle and they are having two Singalongs to "Frozen" - I guess he would love it. Good luck with the Faure. I am debating with myself whether to join the local church choir to help sing for the Christmas period. The choir I was in folded and I do miss it.

herbaceous · 09/11/2014 10:03

His obsession with Frozen seems to be abating slightly – haven't watched it for at least a week – which I find oddly sad. Despite my best efforts, he seems to be turning into a small boy, rushing around with his wooden sword, making 'fsfsfsfshshh' noises. But he still loves all his 45 bed-based cuddly toys, and enacts 'school' with them, giving me hope.

Whaa - can't seem to copy and paste on the tablet version. Can you add me somebody.

We were feeling grumpy this morning as DH said we had to have his leftover fruit salad for Sunday lunch. We have rebelled whilst he went for a bike ride and made apple crumbleSmile.

When my sister announced she was pregnant with my parents' first grandchild, she told me afterwards she thought that was the first congratulations she'd ever received from them on something that was not an academic achievement.

Academics and Beauty (within a narrow - and I mean that literally - set of parameters were what mattered to my parents. Still do, really).

lalsy · 09/11/2014 12:34

MI, are you off tomorrow? Have a brilliant time.

NU, we were at a service too (ds marching, he took it vey seriously this year).

Herbs and Stropps, I am taking my hat off to you. It sounds very hard. KBO.

beachyhead · 09/11/2014 17:15

Could someone add me.

We've had an odd weekend. Dh's dad died yesterday. It was expected and he'd had a long and good life, but still sad. Dh was there so that was good.

Other than that just exhausted really. Most of last week was spent here with kids on my own in the evenings and trying to do the three different school runs on my own (as dh was up and down to his parents). Sorry that sounds so selfish, but any change to a complicated school/work/life routine takes so much valuable brain energy.
