Warm waterproof coat - holy grail?

So I started a new job this year which involves a train commute, having stood on the platform this morning in the freezing cold, wind and rain I have decided a need a warm, cosy and waterproof coat before the winter. After a quick search Didrikson and Merrell coats seem to come up recommended but which design in particular? Also the Merrell website has hardly any coats - am I too early? And yes I know it's still August but I'm in Scotland and it really was cold this morning!

Thanks ladies x

Waheyy this thread has started for this year !Smile (sorry OP its a MN tradition to hunt for the perfect warm waterproof bum covering coat every year)

My tip (if I had any money I would look here) would be to look here

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 21/08/2014 22:10

I need one too, one with a hood that stays up in windy weather!

Quilted Barbours on sale here

Paddingtonthebear · 21/08/2014 22:13

Loads of MN threads about this, it is indeed the holy grail item. I have a Merrell Haven II, it's brill, the Ellenwood might be a bit smarter for work though. Here's the most recent thread

I am on my third Moncler jacket, I think they are amazing and worth the rather large price.

Merrell Haven

With toggles

My 2 offerings.
I am lurking for other suggestions Grin

Ah, rubbish, Paddington beat me to it Sad

I have a Northface coat. It was expensive but it is now 4 years old and going strong. It is waterproof and v warm (you can detach the warm lining in spring).

meglet · 21/08/2014 22:21

I'm still kicking myself for not buying the North Face one a couple of years ago.

Just had a look on Rohan and even their warmest down coat is only water resistant.

BiscuitMillionaire · 21/08/2014 22:22

I thought the Northface long padded coat was the MN holy grail, but it costs eleventy million pounds.

pixiegumboot · 21/08/2014 22:24

Buy my merrels on eBay ATM!??

Shia · 21/08/2014 22:24

I have recently bought two Didriksons. The Taylor and the Elsa.

I like the furry hood of the Taylor but for me the better coat is the Elsa.

Both bought from Fife Country who have the best prices.

I got rid of my north face coat once I got the merrell. 100 times better

meglet · 21/08/2014 22:27

Is it the Arctic Parka? 350?

The school and work run has me walking for an hour each way. I get so fed up with crappy winter coats that 350 seems like a bargain.

Shia · 21/08/2014 22:29

They also have the Tilde at a bargain price

I have a haven will be its 4th winter and still like new. I fancy a change so lurking on here to see if there is another wonderful coat out there :)

Shia · 21/08/2014 22:33

I have to have new coats every year. I wouldn't feel right wearing the same one the next winter. I either pass them on to my daughter, one of my cousins or my sons girlfriend or sell on ebay.

trixymalixy · 21/08/2014 22:33

In my experience, you can have two out of my three criteria, warm, waterproof, not looking like you're going hillwalking. Getting all three is the holy grail of coats.

And yes it was bloody freezing in Scotland ths morning. I am putting the electric blanket ack on the bed tomorrow!

TheBogQueen · 21/08/2014 22:36

Am also freezing. Also in Scotland. But it's August and no way am I putting the heating on.

I saw some lovely ilse Jacobsen (?) coats at Copenhagen airport but never seen them here.

PacificDogwood · 21/08/2014 22:37

I have the Northface one and it is not as warm as I had hoped.
Scotland here too, so I need serious insulation and waterproofness!

Paddingtonthebear · 21/08/2014 22:59
